the year is 2025 and people still use .mov to share video content on the internet. This means they are uploading directly from their iPhone with probably little to no optimization at all. I blame this on the current media servers that allow direct upload and serve the file as is. Sure, the option to actually serve the original file is good but for the health of the ecosystem (and if they wish to actually scale), it would be better to perform some actions to the file and serve an optimized version instead. These files tend to be much higher quality than needed and cost a lot of wasted bandwidth and have much less compatibility. maybe we need NIPs with specific video encoding format

sorted by created_at in this case is very misleading because it's the date of the last follow but we cannot know for sure who that follow was without a more complete history of that specific list, so unless your key is the last in the tags array (supposing it was appended) the created_at date is kind of meaningless, i.e if someone follows you since a year ago but just updated it's follow list to include someone else now, it would show up as the most recent follow list that you're in, but not the last one to add you..

my nip-60 integration in alphaama is coming along nicely. I can already create and import wallets, mint and melt proofs. still work in progress but I'm amazed all of this is already possible with no friction at all. now going to work on adding P2PK with nip-61, if anyone wants to send some nutzap my way for science it would be helpful for testing. happy new year 🤘

first pass at having outbox working in alphaama, if you now do `q out <fid>` instead of `q run <fid>`, it splits the request by the write relays of each pubkey in the `authors` field.

seeing a lot of `p` tags with the third value marked 'root' or 'mention'. aren't marked stuff exclusive to `e` tags per nip10?
shouldn't `p` tags have a petname at that index instead? nip1 does not say what goes on the third value but nip2 defines it as petname, at least in the context of kind:3, but I think it should be extended to all p tags for consistency.

deletions on nostr are expensive for clients and relays that need to keep track of what has been deleted. relays are forced to keep a table of all these deletion notes and query against them for every inbound event to make sure they're not accepting events that were deleted a long time ago that just resurfaced now. this will never scale well and no relay / client should opt into this theater. IMO it only works now at a small scale, but as the network grows it will be unsustainable for any relay and client as the list of deleted events only grows.

'.mov' video files only playback on apple software, and usually it's a sign that they have been uploaded from the camera roll without any processing, making them unwatchable on most browsers except Safari and much more heavy than an optimised for web version.

I'm forging my own path and exploring how I can interact with the protocol without nanny rails and glossy buttons. it's very difficult at the moment because the protocol is still in it's infancy and keeps changing with new features added continuously. I had to rewrite my client a bunch of times because when I think I have a good base, suddenly the big clients start to adopt a new NIP that renders my code unfit (bech32, rpe, outbox, etc...), the paradigm of what a client should do keeps changing, so there's no time to sit and design with a clear focus because users keep expecting their client to adopt whatever the other clients have. IMO, good design will only arise when a client can confidently stay in a fixed set of features, but for now it's been more on having all the features functioning than having them be designed properly.

I'm not because I don't use the feature. but if you're going to ask for everything just for a count, might as well trust the relay for that, because it's meaningless anyway and the relay doesn't have to send everything and you don't have to download everything just to discard it afterwards. but just because I don't use it doesn't mean that other don't as well, so if clients will do it because they can, they will, and in that scenario, it is best to have a better solution with tradeoffs both agree.

no, because the notes are external content not generated by the relays, the relays cannot be trusted ever, the client needs to verify everything. you're advocating for clients to "just trust me bro" which is completely wrong. the practice of displaying a single integer count is the problem, and clients downloading tons of events just for that are the problem. anyway, there's a COUNT nip since a long time ago that I helped shape precisely to unburden relays from this bad practice.

i don't really know much about how bloom filters work, but I had envisioned that requests could use an event id that the relay already has and use the content/tags of that event to get the pubkeys/tags for the request, the request would be a single note id instead of 1000's. it doesn't maybe impact the burden on relays but helps keep the request small. not sure how any of this is actually feasible and relevant to your post...

my follows list is 210 pubkeys long (very small in contrast to others), after processing all my follows follows I end up with 15k+ pubs to cram into my db. this is the single choke point of alphaama right now and only a problem because indexedDB is shit (my code as well probably...)
working to fix this as it makes the browser unresponsive (sometimes crashes). it usually only happens the first time you run a query for your follows kind:3

hey everyone that uses Amethyst, you should be aware that the app sends a reaction note (⚠️) when you report another note as spam, the same way as if you reacted with 😀 or 😂 or 🤙 or 🤮. the dev thinks it's the same thing and doesn't want to change this behaviour that only his client does, so when other clients ask for the notes you reacted to, they get the spam notes you were trying to get rid off, effectively spreading them to your audience. Is this the behaviour you expect when reporting?

it's been a while since I could open my Quicktime player, it automatically crashes after launching. there are 3 videos that open with the app and I can't seem to be able to clear that recent list and make the app open empty. tried some terminal commands without success. Does anyone know of a way to clear the recent list with the app closed? Also deleted the app state folder but that also did nothing.. help

The past two months with the sec-01 were probably two of the best months of my life and I'm not young anymore.
I applied to @npub1s0v…rmq5 without knowing much about what would happen and on the first day I discovered that they didn't know either so I immediately felt at home :)

When everyone is passionate about their work and open-source technology, things just flow and it doesn't feel like work anymore (even though a lot was done there, like a lot..).
