Internaut. Miracle Ball. Barcode Battler. NE2000 compatible. I used to post about random DOS games that The Script™ picked from a pool of about 17000 games but after about 140 games I unfortunately lost the motivation to continue. If you're really interested they can be found all the way down on my timeline (I posted about the last game on 15-08-2023) Favorite version of MS-DOS: 5.0 When: 20 minutes into the future

Last Notes npub1rrplshjczqdu0g28vtsewngqz3vd50em90vu9p33vlwxsqjsdnesyu9cdg CONFIG.SYS: LOADHIGH That was fast, just two weeks after the company announcement that we must use LLMs for everything, I've gotten the option to either get in line or leave (with a few months of pay) Bizarre. Anyway, something to think about tonight, but it feels like I will lose either way, considering the global AI psychosis. npub1rrplshjczqdu0g28vtsewngqz3vd50em90vu9p33vlwxsqjsdnesyu9cdg CONFIG.SYS: LOADHIGH KIXX is for sure one of the worst offenders, with their giant logo stealing the spotlight of what you're actually buying. The ones I saw the most in shops were EA's budget rereleases of DOS games. I can see some cost savings there: a sleeve around a generic carton box. But it was still a full sized box, so not saving on shelf space. And when you had a shelf of them, they all looked the same from a distance: blue, with a colorful blob in one of the corners. https://files.bitbang.social/media_attachments/files/116/663/490/563/302/318/original/933f7549e689456d.jpg npub1rrplshjczqdu0g28vtsewngqz3vd50em90vu9p33vlwxsqjsdnesyu9cdg CONFIG.SYS: LOADHIGH I've been wondering for a while why the box art of "budget" (re)releases of games were made to look so ugly? I guess it makes them look cheaper. But when drudging through a store, wouldn't a fancy looking box with a 50% discount not look better than a box that's ugly with a difficult to recognize (from a distance) shrunken cover art in the middle? Anyone know what the business reason behind this was/is? npub1rrplshjczqdu0g28vtsewngqz3vd50em90vu9p33vlwxsqjsdnesyu9cdg CONFIG.SYS: LOADHIGH Hopefully we will see a torrent soon, to help relieve that poor server, and also his hosting bill (I really hope he has an unlimited data plan) npub1rrplshjczqdu0g28vtsewngqz3vd50em90vu9p33vlwxsqjsdnesyu9cdg CONFIG.SYS: LOADHIGH Today someone (who is not on Mastodon) released a collection of more than 570 distinct operating systems, pre-installed with VM configurations for the 250+ different platforms, going back all the way to 1948. https://virtualosmuseum.org/ Now, I have to admit I'm posting this without trying it myself, as I'm running low on disk space on this machine. Because the full download is 121GB (174GB unzipped!). There is also a lighter version at 14GB that will download stuff on demand. #retrocomputing npub1rrplshjczqdu0g28vtsewngqz3vd50em90vu9p33vlwxsqjsdnesyu9cdg CONFIG.SYS: LOADHIGH Some recent posts on Microsoft Dinosaurs made me curious how they created its custom, textured title bar in Windows 3.x. Was Microsoft using some secret API to do it, or was it a visual trick (e.g. hiding the real title bar and draw a fake, textured one) Turns out there is no "SetCaptionBarTexture()" API or anything, but it is possible to draw on the title bar itself at certain moments. Not super documented (MS wanted to promote a UI standard), but not a real hack either. I mean, I can do it. https://files.bitbang.social/media_attachments/files/116/550/583/864/584/620/original/1cbb89230fda8404.png npub1rrplshjczqdu0g28vtsewngqz3vd50em90vu9p33vlwxsqjsdnesyu9cdg CONFIG.SYS: LOADHIGH That takes me back to the time Firefox had a RSS reader built-in npub1rrplshjczqdu0g28vtsewngqz3vd50em90vu9p33vlwxsqjsdnesyu9cdg CONFIG.SYS: LOADHIGH When I was testing something with #SimCity 2000's traffic routing I was thinking: "I wish there was a OpenTTD or OpenRCT2 of SimCity 2000" There is actually a project that has started the work! Current releases have focused on patching SimCity 2000 SE to run on modern (Windows) systems, and adding a modding API, but the first parts of the game have been reverse engineered and reimplemented in C++. Very cool! https://sc2kfix.net/ npub1rrplshjczqdu0g28vtsewngqz3vd50em90vu9p33vlwxsqjsdnesyu9cdg CONFIG.SYS: LOADHIGH The restterm link goes to some blog/newsletter service without a direct link to the project's GitHub Here's the link: https://github.com/unkn0wn-root/resterm I think I could very much use this. I tried some other TUIs that were an alternative to Postman (ugh, they went full corporate. Never go full corporate) but all stalled in their development. I'm somewhat surprised that you don't really (have to) use the command line, despite being a Linux user. Do the GUIs serve you well? npub1rrplshjczqdu0g28vtsewngqz3vd50em90vu9p33vlwxsqjsdnesyu9cdg CONFIG.SYS: LOADHIGH I'm preparing a (second hand) Dell notebook for my mother, because her (otherwise adequate) machine is not "eligible" to run Windows 11 The process from a fresh Windows 10 installation to even get to the Windows 11 installer is a nightmare. Despite Microsoft (and Dell's unhelpful bloatware) constantly pointing to "Windows Update", it has no option to initiate the upgrade. I had to really dig to find a manual installer. I think we've reached the point where installing Linux has become easier. npub1rrplshjczqdu0g28vtsewngqz3vd50em90vu9p33vlwxsqjsdnesyu9cdg CONFIG.SYS: LOADHIGH https://files.bitbang.social/media_attachments/files/114/920/676/443/004/361/original/e445f98d1e1cf5ae.png npub1rrplshjczqdu0g28vtsewngqz3vd50em90vu9p33vlwxsqjsdnesyu9cdg CONFIG.SYS: LOADHIGH Doom run on an acapella choir https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKebn_Ly9T8 npub1rrplshjczqdu0g28vtsewngqz3vd50em90vu9p33vlwxsqjsdnesyu9cdg CONFIG.SYS: LOADHIGH The original owner took their labeling very seriously, I don't think I've ever seen non-retail disks labelled on the top before. npub1rrplshjczqdu0g28vtsewngqz3vd50em90vu9p33vlwxsqjsdnesyu9cdg CONFIG.SYS: LOADHIGH I think this company has a problem, but I don't think it has to do with the applicants they're getting or any new hires that didn't work out. #hiring #recruitment https://files.bitbang.social/media_attachments/files/114/540/227/965/940/659/original/39e7da9f1ea53c8c.png
