Stop reporting people in need for using your special little hashtag. Grow the fuck up. I think Kamala Harris will be fine.

What do you look for in a server?

Question for those who DO think that the focus of Mastodon and everyone making Fediverse projects SHOULD be focusing on GROWTH: why?
Not a trick question. This is a safe thread. I want to hear from you. I won’t argue (unless you’re literally just being an asshole of course) and please no one else fight with anyone in the replies.
I really want to understand your perspective. Thanks!
:boost_ok:
(If you do not think that the focus should be on growth, then you are not the target audience of this post. Growth is not my priority either, but I am seeking to understand other perspectives. Thanks!)

For those just logging on, hi and hello.
Esther and I have come to a pretty difficult decision - strangeobject.space will be shut down on the 31st of December 2024. The instance will cease, as will our duties as Admins.
Thank you to those on and outside this little server that put their faith in us. I hope we lived up to your expectations.
Thank you to everyone who supported us, taught us and challenged us.
We wrote a lengthy blog post about it - it can be hard to read, it was hard to write.
Please don’t speculate on the who’s and the what’s. If you have questions - ask.
You can read more here,
👉🏻 https://blog.strangeobject.space/posts/2024-09-23-shutting-down.html
I have thousands more words than I put down there, but these will do for now.

Hello everyone

E, sadly right now from Amazon because I’m tied to Kindle and haven’t yet found a reliable source of paid ebooks (I want the author to get -some- money, I don’t want to download them “illegally”)
I do like physical, but don’t have a lot of space. I would want to basically give them to charity shops as soon as I’m done with them but I fear they would just languish on a dusty pile forever so at least I’m not wasting paper?

If you can, please sign up to donate some blood this month. I’ll be making an appointment soon, I’ve only done it once many years ago.

Legitimate concerns?
Hell yeah I have legitimate concerns.
I’m legitimately concerned that I’m too dehydrated to get a sufficient amount of piss into your cornflakes.

I'm probably just being unnecessarily salty and putting too much onus on the artist.
I've a lot of stress from what's going on and at first glance I'm like, just give a little context so the message is understood by those who need to hear it most.
I accept being wrong on that

I'd like him to say what he means. Give context. Because we've seen just how much misinformation and choosing our meaning for things has caused great harm this week.
As well as his shit going for millions: one of his new pieces stolen within hours to go and get sold somewhere I'm sure.
Happy to be corrected, but it feels very off to me.
(I know people selling and profiting off of his work, is not his fault, fwiw)

I'm sure people are looking a stretching cat, and a goat looking at a CCTV camera and ascribing meaning along the lines "Banksy is not for all of this fascism" but it all feels pretty bizzarre to me.

2024-08-10 16:55:25 GMT

Does it feel weird to anyone else that during race-riots Banksy has been pratting about London spray painting animals everywhere? Just me?

As a trans admin I have been dealing with more and more reports in the last week from users of my instance witnessing or having transphobia directed at them.
It happens occasionally, but it is very concentrated right now. It’s not just from shitty instances, it’s shitty people on “regular” instances.
Please, cis allies, challenge this transphobic behaviour when you see it. Please don’t let this be normalised. Please don’t let trans people have to deal with this shit in their timelines.
Right now it feels like it’s allowed here. This should not be.

It's @npub1v9w…246g and I's two year anniversary today. I'm proud of us, greatful, and looking forward to many more years.
We're 600 miles apart so if you'd like to help me celebrate her and us with a little gift, could you share your favourite album in the replies?
We've been bonding over music a lot lately and listening to them and sharing notes is something we can do remotely.
Any genre is fine and a wide array of genres is encouraged; but if you want to touch upon our *favourite* genres:
James - Hip-Hop, R&B, Afrofuturism, Pop, Electronic, Rock, Melodic Metal
Esther - Metal, Rock, Post-Rock, Jazz, Electronic
Thanks! :)

Would people be interested if I started sharing UK news articles? Behind a content warning, naturally.
I don't get the sense theres a lot of awareness about UK stuff, and I'd be happy to share more (and it would also mean, I read more).

I have a project I’d like to see it is feasible, and have some pointers to resources on where to get started.
The project:
Imagine I have two pieces of writing, both from anonymous sources.
I’d like to be able to code something up that I could take prose A and prose B as inputs and output how likely it is that they were written by the same person.
Is that possible? If so, got any pointers? I don’t even have a place to start but I think this would be a very fun project.

I always appreciate specifics wherever possible, because I check back on accounts and reports over time and so takes time to piece all the context back together again if there’s little to go off on a report/post combo.

I’m clearly holding a lot of bad vibes within me after a rough few days (more like a week) and I’m not doing a good job of releasing it. I resent myself for it which continues the cycle of bad vibes!
So; if you have anything nice to share, would you share it with me?
What’s a good thing that’s happened to you recently? Did you see a cool flower? Did you eat a nice sandwich? Did you achieve something awesome? Do you have a beautiful pet that I must see immediately?
Thanks! :ablobcatbongotwitter:

Looking forward to being old and being able to travel for free only if I’m 80, and it’s after 2pm and before 3pm. ✌🏻

It’s also not a 60+ pass btw. It’s directly tied to what’s ever the government decide the pension page is.
It used to be 60+. In 2010 they changed it to “whatever we decided the age you aren’t financially useful to us anymore”. Which was 60 for women, and 65 for men in 2010. Right now it it’s 66 for “both” genders. 67 in 2028. And keep increasing after that I’m sure.

Huh. It was actually after 9am only from the start? But then they dropped that restriction in 2009. Then put it back in 2021. Then kept it? So, I was wrong about since 1973.

Thing is, they put it in as a temporary message during the (ongoing!) pandemic. To reduce overcrowding and “promote social distancing”.
But they made it permanent last year.
Why? Money. Apparently TFL lost sooo much money during the (ongoing!!) pandemic that restricting the travel of 60+ people, which has been unrestricted since 1973, is gonna save them that cash?
Thing is there’s also the “Freedom Pass” for disabled people. Which does the same thing. And disabled folk can still travel before 9am (good). But it means there’s an even smaller group of people that are restricted, how much does this really save?
Edit: it’s existed since 1973, unrestricted since 2009.

Waiting for the bus with an elderly couple. The woman asks me if this is our bus and I’m like if you’re going to X, yes! And she was like “I’m not sure they’ll let us on” and I was like huh?
Of course, I forgot. Pension age folk with a “60+” pass that gives them free travel, no longer have totally free travel. Jan ‘23 they made it so they are not allowed to use the bus for free before 9am.
Cos you know, they couldn’t possibly want to go anywhere or do anything before 9am 🙄
It was 8:59am and she asked permission from the bus driver and he let her on. She’s on the way to a hospital appointment ffs.
This country fucks me right off.

See, their email kinda sucked. Because a lot more nuance is provided in their webpage
