Last Notes npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P On this evening’s walk, we passed by a field full of random plants where there were dozens of dragonflies alternating between buzzing around over the plants and basking on the greenway where we were walking. It was a delight! npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P The brain’s desire to find patterns is fascinating. While I’ve been reading, I keep thinking I hear rock music in the distance. But when I pay actual attention to the sounds around me, I realize it’s just the sounds of multiple fans pulsing against each other plus some other equipment in the vicinity. There is not actual rock music in earshot: no synthesizer, no guitars, no incomprehensible people with harsh vocal styles (I don’t know the technical term). My brain is filling in the gaps. npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P went out for an evening walk and this tiny toad was kind enough to turn up for #TinyToadTuesday https://stockroom.wandering.shop/media_attachments/files/112/759/560/602/056/439/original/16c183deeb4880ec.jpeg npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P I was explaining to spouse that I’ve switched over to using grams for weighing my yarn, and am about to buy myself a scale with tenth of a gram measurements for more precision. He pointed out that I could measure my yarn in scruples if I wanted. (A scruple is about 1.296g). It would certainly be amusing! But I don’t think I could easily get a digital scale that uses them, and I think people buying my knitting patterns would be annoyed. (Not really serious. Just an amusing thought.) npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P We’re going through a bunch of old family media and came across this recording tape, and that’s certainly an aesthetic choice. Were they trying to hypnotize people into buying it? https://stockroom.wandering.shop/media_attachments/files/112/580/830/068/149/925/original/4b37e091f7b41c6d.jpeg npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P Two dragonflies at once! And bonus tadpoles. This is a puddle that comes and goes depending how much rain there’s been. Or maybe a tiny pond? Anyway, when it’s there, we check it for tadpoles because this isn’t the first time we’ve seen some there. https://stockroom.wandering.shop/media_attachments/files/112/538/564/601/507/450/original/06fd79839094ff11.jpeg npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P The tiniest bee I have ever seen was pollinating a tomato plant in our garden. It was about half a centimeter long! (I must confess I eyeballed it at 3/16 of an inch and then converted.) Those pollen pants! https://stockroom.wandering.shop/media_attachments/files/112/509/346/909/413/660/original/4e5fbca95c75d714.jpeg npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P @npub1uzr…k9aj That’s lovely! npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P @npub1typ…c8hh I managed to avoid it by reminding myself that it’s not likely there would have been an actual answer when I clicked through. npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P @npub1typ…c8hh I also struggled with that one npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P Just needed to figure out what glue I should use to attach leather to something else, and amazingly I remembered this useful website someone told me about ages ago: https://thistothat.com npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P This week’s blog post is a motif that I’ve seen in at least two of my procedurally generated charted designs. https://www.gannetdesigns.com/2024/05/07/constellations-a-charted-design-for-any-craft/ #knitting #ChartedDesigns #SurfacePatterns https://stockroom.wandering.shop/media_attachments/files/112/400/637/285/581/851/original/49d59ba2062b3eb9.jpeg npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P Walked down to the park at dusk to see if we could see the barred owl chick, and wow, we didn’t have to peer through vines on the dead tree near the path where the nest is, because it had flown to the top of the neighboring dead tree and was craning its neck around to look at things. It’s still pretty fluffy! This explains why we had seen the silhouette of an adult owl in a nearby tree over the path with its neck stretched up and peering in that direction. npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P @npub1kxp…lt8h Part of me is wistful that you’re not, but it does seem like a massive complication npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P @npub1kxp…lt8h Field of view, academic field, field you plant things in, field in a form? Yeah. npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P This morning, spouse and I are wearing shorts because it was hot last night. The cat hopped up on the footrest we were both using and stared disapprovingly at our bare legs until I put a blanket on my lap. Then she stood on my lap and performed the standard routine: glaring at me until I obeyed and gave her a small number of head pats, after which she curled up and went to sleep. Including a snapping turtle. https://stockroom.wandering.shop/media_attachments/files/112/186/287/332/811/945/original/c985fcee4b9b0ed0.jpeg npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P I just read this line from the Edge of Worlds, by Martha Wells: > Fairly reasonable people often expected everyone they knew to be fairly reasonable too, and were shocked when this proved not to be the case. I suddenly had a thought and went and checked the copyright date: 2016. Hm, yeah, makes sense. npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P Went to Duke Gardens on Thursday, and the cherry trees are just ridiculously beautiful right now. #BloomScrolling https://stockroom.wandering.shop/media_attachments/files/112/147/438/706/525/754/original/6f46e48819599f96.jpeg npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P Onionize your workplace npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P @npub1asa…n9sr It’s size 3, but I am a tight knitter and also if I were to knit socks with this yarn, I’d be knitting them on size 0s, probably. npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P This is my slowest current project — it’s a handspun laceweight garter stitch shawl, and I usually only get it out when I can’t concentrate on anything else. I took it with me to a doctor’s office recently, and someone in the waiting room was boggling at the tiny stitches. I shrugged and said, “it’ll be finished when it’s finished; right now I’m enjoying the knitting.” For a change, the person actually got the idea; random people don’t always understand this. #knitting #FiberArts https://stockroom.wandering.shop/media_attachments/files/112/111/339/935/289/250/original/063e04185d43b01f.jpeg npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P Last year I wrote up a mega thread with lots of links about mending textiles. Success! The insert just looks vaguely decorative, especially after I did a tiny bit of duplicate stitch at the bottom point to cover up some weirdness related to grafting and increases. Now my clavicles are sufficiently warm. I won’t really be sure how it’ll come out until it’s been washed, but I’m too busy wearing it. #NecessarySweater #knitting https://stockroom.wandering.shop/media_attachments/files/111/290/312/578/332/125/original/6580eacf920cbdc6.jpeg npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P A couple of recentish photos of Shadow for #BlackCatFriday in honor of Friday the 13th. #cats https://stockroom.wandering.shop/media_attachments/files/111/228/953/950/566/031/original/240e987d19cda173.jpeg https://stockroom.wandering.shop/media_attachments/files/111/228/954/047/008/827/original/443e7cec647d8953.jpeg npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P @npub1qjr…kgt0 I like using the bulb shaped safety pins. I don’t remember where I saw this tip, but I’m really grateful for it, even though I do count each set of 20 stitches twice to be certain. But this way I can count 9 stitch markers plus 16 more stitches, and I’ll be good to go. #knitting #FiberArts npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P This is the shawl that never ends… I am never knitting another garter stitch shawl in laceweight yarn, no matter how nice the yarn. (It turns out that I’m only mostly a process knitter.) I probably won’t finish it this month, but I’ve at least been working on it more, which is sufficient for my purposes. Next time I have yarn like this, I’ll weave it instead. #FallFinishAlong #knitting #FiberArts https://stockroom.wandering.shop/media_attachments/files/111/099/675/692/169/723/original/81415c3001f54ae5.jpeg npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P Dear cat, if you want me to get up and give you treats, you need to stop lying on my foot. npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P In the long run, I’m looking for some heavier linen fabric, but I’d like to buy some lightweight 100% linen to replace part of a blouse. There’s no overarching thread to the whole thing; each section is its own thought. What I didn’t think to say there is that I learned to do that kind of interlacing when I was obsessed with George Bain’s Celtic knotwork method in my teens. It’s interesting to me what random things have influenced me over the years. #knitting #FiberArts #PatternDesign https://www.gannetdesigns.com/2023/08/09/random-thoughts-about-the-meta-cable-lace-cable-design/ npub1txm7l7qsnkmpgtxkx4zv8sk578ta7e4cjdql52366ndssp84lkcqpmvawq Naomi P This month’s word suggested by my Patreon is Cable. I called the resulting stitch patterns “meta Cable” to make them easier to search for. I’m always amused by this category of word.
