The urban renewal continues. Fescue grass is up from seed. This was roto-tilled 5x and 75 gallons of garbage was cleaned up during that ptocess-broken glass, insulation, bits of house, broken toys, needles, you name it.

It probably would, in this case, this was the order I found the rocks.
The key here is more about interlocking mass. There is a steel T post driven 3 feet deep in the center of the stone pile. It stabilizes the mass. The wire mesh retains the mass.
Solid stone in this area weighs 160# per cubic foot, so this mass post probably will exceed two tons.

For me at least, the relative portability aspect of bitcoin gives it advantages over gold.
On the other hand, gold offers discrete transactions that seem not possible with BTC. Discussing the possibilities of running sterile transactions seems useful.
Outside of that, some look at relative volatility and security of BTC compared with the competitors- metals, bonds, commodities, etc would be interesting.

The lot was scrapped clean as of last night.
I hope to have grass and clover planted by late next week, and the hugoculture beds established throughout July.
I am toying with planting a few species of desert evergreen to compliment the two trees we retained. (It is a felony to kill trees on the desert, or at least it should be)

Follow up on the re-village project. Crew dropped the buildings yesterday and is cleaning up the larger pieces today. We are about 20 days behind schedule- I had hoped to have live roots in the ground by June 15 in time for our fog rains. One thing that I have observed- people thing in terms of their own finances.
Our SAR unit has a variety of different levels of wealth, and a useful county budget. The poor folks hate spending money out of the budget, because they project their situation onto the SAR budget. They don’t have any money, so they act like no one has any money.
The better off members act surprised that not everyone will buy quality personal gear, or support spending money to build future capability.
This probably is a useful observation for many aspects of life and building.

Absolutely. My advice is to stick with the classic cartridges that have stood the test of time. A .30 caliber 150 gr bullet starting at 2700 feet per second has been a benchmark for well over a century. The .30/06 and the upstart .308 both meet this threshold handily.

I call it Front Porch Nationalism. If I can’t see it or hear it from my front porch, it probably is out of my control and not worth wasting time, energy, or mental bandwidth on. If I can see or hear it, my interested (and those of my immediate neighbors) are served by dealing with it one way or the other.
If everyone adopted this policy, our neighborhoods (and states and nation) would all be better for it.

My plan is a series of trench about 18x18” and 16’ long. The stumps and large brush will fill the trench, the grass and straw will mound about 18” high above ground.
Some beds will have climbing fence installed for vining crops, some will have slats to help break the wind and provide some shade as needed.

They can be any size- a garden I have looked at nearby has 16’ long beds with plants on a width of maybe 18”. Those are setup as shallow beds, maybe 18” deep.
Many are several feet deep by the time the three layers are consolidated.

Sure, conversation is good. Hugo culture is a mulch bed that tends to hold water, and slowly release nutrients over time.
It is a triangular layer system- large wood stumps in the bottom, brush and branches above, then grass clippings and straw on top. This is watered so there is reduced air space, then plants are inserted into the lop layer.
There are above ground Hugo beds and and below ground trench Hugo beds- the latter are better for dry windier climates such as Montana.
This is a personal project- I am not trying to do CSA or anything like it.

I am contributing to the reverse gentrification (maybe villagefication, is that a word?) of a rural town.
I bought a foreclosed house on a few lots, and am tearing it down. Once the lots are bare, top soil will be added, irrigation installed, and some hugoculture beds built. With this space, a degree of food stability will be achieved, while reducing the inventory of junk houses and buildings in the town.

As an idea: Citizenship as a service may fix that. Rather than birth right citizenship, what if it was tied to paying taxes? If you believe your interests were being served, then you pay taxes. If not, no tax bill.
This would make the government much more responsive to its citizens. If it strays far from where the center is, it goes broke.

Ponds aren’t tough to make- depending on topography and size they can be pretty easy.
A small Cat like D4 or D6 will make a pond in short order.
Saluting is right- every time we slow the water cycle on the ground surface we create a system larger than the sun of its parts.
Build the pond(s), plant some cattails and trees, introduce fish- you are well on your way to a solid system.

The interesting thing about that chart is that much of the improvement is from corn- an important feedstock for CAFO livestock.
Wheat and rice are more direct food sources and haven’t benefited as dramatically from the types of innovation we see in corn and soybeans.
I absolutely believe wheat yield can be pushed in high management systems, but instances of doing that are rare, and often rotational to achieve other ends.
Another thing of note- Stock to Use ratio really hasn’t changed much over the timeline. So we are raising more crop on fewer acres to feed and fuel a greater number of people. At the same time, urban sprawl is steadily chewing into some the most productive lands- hardly the highest and best use from an agronomic point of view.
I would love to visit with a mob theory or chaos theory person about where this all goes. Some market theory states “Resources will find their highest and best use in an unregulated system”. That is an impossibility. Every system is regulated by a number of factors- ecological, climate, finance, time, capacity, and so forth then eventually bias and preference which we can call human policy. This might be a great topic for your podcast, if you can find an interesting person to visit with.

This is a bleak snapshot, but I see a lot of opportunity for market correction. There are tens of millions of acres of ethanol corn that can (should) shift to food crops.
That will happen anyway, as electrification of the US vehicle fleet accelerates- there isn’t going to be a magic home for all that ethanol.
The water problem is tougher- there is a bunch of moldy value tied up in irrigated land. The real problem in the water space is that for every significant increase in water use efficiency, there is not a corresponding decrease in water use- the savings get moved over to new acres, and the aquifer keeps getting sucked dry 10-200x faster than recharge rate.
The farm lobby groups are not thinking long term, and haven’t for decades. The grower groups think (at most) in 5 year farm bill cycles. For all the talk about passing the family farm on to the next generation, there is little that makes me believe this generational bridge is thinking broadly about the reality of it.
