I started using Doom Emacs.
Doom run from the command line works fine, but I want to start the command from the desktop environment (Hyprland in my case with Rofi) but I cannot get it to work.
Any #emacs #doom users who can help out?

@nprofile…65df @nprofile…udzz Sure, I cover some history, the typical application areas and were it is at his best and jails. I tried to avoid the comparisons on technical level as that would be a difficult type of presentation. I have a screenshot of up time and resource / task usage that says enough on how much the system (a small thin client with 32gb ram) performs under this load.
I use Linux also, for the applications that need to have that as foundation. But always looking at BSD replacements as we go along.

@nprofile…sr9k @nprofile…udzz I hope so, the “tricky” bit is the Linux audience.
But I use also Nixos and other distributions so… never had any bad reactions in this *nix world

In 2 weeks time I get my first opportunity to present #BSD and #FreeBSD on a Linux convention (small setting), hosted by @nprofile…udzz
The presentation is ready, going to introduce the OS and the way I use it. high level.
Unfortunately I have no merchandise or stickers to give away.
If I can persuade one visitor to give it a try or use it? I am happy

Yesterday evening I created a presentation with #libreoffice Impress.
Ok, it needs some time to learn. But in the end it works as intended.
The most time I spent looking were all there features were hidden.
So! No need to stick to Microsuft feel free to install an try.

And #nixos is also a very nice OS and Hyprland as Desktop
Temporary install some tools? Use a different shell? Just use
"nix-shell -p ripgrep fish --run fish"
et voila! No configs harmed and removed with a simple exit.

I am switching from Home assistant to OpenHab.
I like the setup, automations. Modeling my equipment in rooms, floors is super handy
The gui is also nice and easy, graphs are not setup but the examples look nice.
The export of data to MySQL or any other persistent database is simple and integrated
What a respectable amount of plugins
It is a bit new and fiddling withall the new ways it gets configured but intuitive
So any tips or links to how-to guides and best practices?

A partly screenshot of a flake.nix, which installs #vscodium and adds Platformio (patched) in a Nix-Shell.
The nix-shell installs and updates when needed.
All with a copy paste from a user who figured this out.
Very cool usage of #nixos

@nprofile…sr9k thanks
Yes it is nice to see how much you can control and measure beer, I like the insights
Hope the beer tastes well 😀

2025-03-10 06:18:54 GMT

The last few years I built some controllers mostly based on #ESP using C++ open source projects.
I thought it would be nice to list them for those interested in #homebrew and #beer making.
I like the brew process but also the design and building steps of electronic equipment
1: brew controller designed by a fellow beer brewer. Controls temperature and steps during mashing. Touch screen and a control of the indcution cooker
2: a simple temperature measure and time (as backup when I remotely brew)
3: iSpindle to measure the progression in the alcohol during the fermentation
Now replaced by a device that utilizes bluetooth and qmtt and more because it resides inside a metal container
4: brewpiless, a controller for the fermentation chamber. It switches the cooling and heating to maintain a controlled environment
Below some prototypes, more to follow if there is interest with some links

I am a novice on IPV6 (as on many subjects, but that’s a compliment for not bragging I believe).
So I got a free test VPS form @nprofile…kf5j and got started.
First learning, my ISP accepts DhCP6 but only provides a local link address only.
I pay a for the service, but this is not one of the services they offer. time to switch.
So with a bit help, I got a tunnel for IPv6, configured #opnsense and my laptop and it works.
Now I can finally login to the VPS.
The journey starts, thanks to the helpful BSD cafe crew and the BoxyBsd owner

Yesterday I made progress combining 2 examples in C on an ESP32 using ESP idf to create a liquid temperature monitor with a small 1306 oled.
Then the frustration started, I wanted to convert a float to a text portion to display it.
Nah error error ….
I save you the frustration but the links I found to help me out did lead other or similar errors.
Probably due to my lack of C knowledge but also curious why such a simple conversion is not simply part of the language or a library
Anyone can share some directions I could use? Apart from learning C of course 🫠

Just flashed into my mind, I spent hours less on system maintenance since I switched from Linux and Proxmox to #freebsd and #bhyve
It is easy to install, it is up and running…. No memory leaks, no package conflicts, no nothing except steady performance and user (sysadmin) joys
Remarkable effort. Thanks

A Python question for the experts.
But first of all a good last few hours towards 2025, have a good go into the new year!
Best wishes!
I want to create a Python based web application for home use.
I looked into various frameworks like Django, Flask and came across Pyramid.
Django examples I can find are outdated, Flask is a micro framework which makes is not suitable for me as starter.
Is Pyramid a good choice?

Question maybe asked already a dozen times but looking at price increases of 30% in 2024 and 22% in 2025 of my current hosting provider I feel the urge to switch my hosting and domain spot. Ridiculous price increases.
Any suggestions in Europe? Prefer EU based servers, a simple basic place to host my stuff.
No need for a VPS or more as a main self-hoster for a lot but not all (yet).

OPNSense extended with Blocky (my favorite DNS / ad blocker:
It is installed on the #OPNsense server. So configuration is done on the commandline. Which is nice. Log file and config on the usual places like #freebsd
I love it when a plan comes together :)

Anyone tips to reduce the CPU and memory usage of #BHyve instances?
Looking at my #freebsd box running 10 jails, these 2 at the top consume more then all 10 jails together
I can reduce the assigned CPU and memory, but anything else would help.
The 2 Linux VMs are needed due to their invasive installs.
Maye #Podman can come to the rescue?

Good morning. Shame on me…
I recently had a lecture on #esphome and thought, nah maybe, interesting but….
But I have to admit, the easy of configuration of a simple esp32, or just yesterday an epaper display with an esp32s3 is delightful. My house is getting full of #mqtt messages 😁
MQTT broker runs in a jail of course.
A set of simple routines broadcasts my weather, temperature and light and energy readings, available everywhere.
#zigbee2mqtt is running in a #freebsd jail.
My technical life gets easier. Anyone who has more practical uses?

Building an #ESP32 (beer) fermentation controller with #MicroPython as OS.
SD card logging, Temperature monitoring and simple web and #mqtt based output: works!
Relais steering for fridge and heating is next.
The (chaotic) breadboard setup works. Now making it more rigid in the next phase.
#homeAssistant integration follows.
