Hmmm. I just saw a picture of a leaf that reminded me of sassafras trees that grow in the Appalachians.

When you come out the other side of that process, and you understand that almost *everything* your family and community taught you about the world and yourself were highly distorted lies, your trust in humankind dissolves. There's a permanent injury that takes place. It scars over but it never truly goes away.

Here's a bit of brutal honesty about my childhood adolescence:
I was raised by a family and a community riddled through with a highly reactionary, prejudicial culture. Hate and bigotry were normalized as wholesome, moral, and socially expected ways of seeing the world.
They tried rather hard to raise me to be one of them, and it might have taken hold if I were not a trans kid who was violently bullied by them for much of my childhood.
