I love Vim, but it's not challenging anymore. They should add a hard mode where if you press any of the arrow keys, it exits without saving. j/k and h/l only.

So cool to see the collaborationist company that blocked the ICC's chief prosecutor at Trump's request has a sense of humor! We should definitely keep trusting GitHub and other wonderful Microsoft services

the admin inserted and backdated the posts

This is a lowkey horror story. Forum posts dated 18 years ago turn out to be backdated AI slop, falsely attributed to what used to be human accounts.

to be clear, "engineering director" is not a single position at Meta, like VP of Eng. It's a title many have, meaning something like manager of managers; manager of an engineering department. Your point stands though, carry on!

Wikipedia is one of the few big websites that still make it possible to argue the internet was a good thing for humanity and not just a tool for amoral oligarchs to surveil us, lure us into surrendering community connections and knowledge into their control, and erect digital tollbooths.

Although the fediverse is in no way scraping-proof, if someone did this so blatantly here they would be widely shunned, defederated, and blocked. The Bluesky spokesperson only offers a milquetoast statement about maybe letting you opt out in the future, suggesting they think this is OK. Point in fedi's favor.

One of the worst misfeatures of #Mastodon from a safety angle: If you get an abusive reply to your post, you can't remove it even by blocking the person. Even after blocking, your server still shows the abusive reply to everyone else.
There has been a patch ready to fix this for 2 years, 6 months, and 1 day. @npub1vl7…f6g0 has not approved it, and has provided *zero* explanation for why he will not allow it to be merged.

We need starter packs on Mastodon. Sounds like some people are working on it...

We all complain about the nags to donate on Wikipedia, but I’d sure be happier if Mozilla had gone that route instead of adtech and AI

It hadn't occurred to me that a followers-only reply to a public post could be an abuse vector. I've only gotten those replies from people I know, seemingly being shy.
Makes sense, though. If the replier has no followers in common with you, it's kind of like an unsolicited DM. It removes the potential for others to see the abusive reply and take action against the replier. Maybe Mastodon should indeed ban or limit this.
