#Forgejo needs more developers that'd work on federation. There's many people expecting it but the project can't pull them out of a magic hat and make federation happen on its own by this time tomorrow.

I feel like German civil society organizations have long benefited from a culture of "volunteering" that was seen as a given. They're also understood to be a core part of a functioning democratic society, so they secure financial means e.g. through local governments and grant initiatives.
Fundraising isn't "sovereign" enough culturally as it is in the US - where many orgs only depend on private donations by default, but that should probably start changing.

Yeah, but you're phrasing your impression of the discussions on Mastodon (?) as if it's reflecting of Codeberg's actual policies, which, with all due respect, they don't.
On the contrary, the blog post states informal guidelines that very much exclude cases like yours: https://blog.codeberg.org/protecting-our-floss-commons-from-llms.html
If you think that's a "bad omen" anyway, fully respect that and the honesty to your community, but I don't think it's an honest narrative of the infra providers' intentions.

For the record, fully respect the decision to self-host instead of using someone else's computer (and the transparency), but I must note that the amount Tom is describing wouldn't have been a problem to begin with.
Otherwise, e.g. the Linux kernel would be banned as well.

I have a friend who is a software engineer and is a fan of trains (i.e. open data). They are looking for a job in and around NRW, Germany.
They can work with just about any modern language other than Haskell and COBOL. Whether it's tinkering around with the Linux kernel, being able to tell you which train to take or dealing with enterprise-grade software – they can do it all.
Unfortunately, the market is tough right now. Can any of you all help / give leads?

- I would be the main moderator (as it is planned) for the whole event, hence why I'd have to talk for 3 hours. (Which could turn into a personal safety issue.)
- It'd start at 17:15, this Sunday.
It's a long shot, but unfortunately the heat wave in western Europe brings certain logistical challenges... 🥲

Hi #Stuttgart, I have organized a "hybrid" member assembly (hundreds online, some offline in different locations) for #Codeberg and. I have a location in Stuttgart, and 9 people are planned to show up with cameras and microphones. It doesn't have AC, and we'll get to 36 degrees.
I have doubts as to whether I can organize things safely in the heat while talking for 3 hours straight. Is there any other entity that could host us instead (requirements: space, AC, projector is a nice-to-have)?

2026-04-09 06:06:04 GMT

hey all #codeberg folks, codeberg currently need helps with the following: we wish to deploy a latest version of our "membership registration form" with lots of new information (https://join.codeberg.org), but we are waiting for translations by the community. you can view a more recent version and compare here: https://join-test.codeberg.org
if you have a couple of minutes of time, it would really help a lot: https://translate.codeberg.org/projects/codeberg/ev-registration-server/

I can't answer on plans, but in theory this is currently already a configuration option that can be toggled. (Don't recommend that, though, see Forgejo's FAQ – authored by yours truly.)

:BoostOK:)

Are you using #Codeberg to host your favorite AI-assisted and otherwise vibecoded project because your desire for dopamine has utterly destroyed your willingness to learn new things? Do you neither care about how you're "flooding the room" of the free software ecosystem nor about the greater societal implications, insisting that "it is what it is"?
Check out #GitHub, the world's most popular AI-first platform! Copilot, annoying maintainers with slop, you'll fit just right in!

2025-12-05 20:07:16 GMT

#Codeberg has a rather small team backing it. As registrations on Codeberg have gone way up as of the past week, we could always use help from (both from non-technical and technical volunteers). To see what we have to offer, take a look here: https://codeberg.org/Codeberg/Contributing/wiki
There isn't necessarily a time commitment involved (if at all). Say, if 20 people spent 5-15 minutes to, say, send a pull request to something that annoyed them in our documentation, it would be in a much better state.

Hi, thank you for spreading the word. Given that money is involved, I think that I have to correct a nuance regarding our blog post (personal opinion) so as to not have people feel misled: We are generally very frugal and tend to prefer upcycling hardware that would otherwise be useless as a _matter of principle_. It's also why we chose to promote another non-profit that repurposes hardware to those in need.

yeah we'll do a blog post the next time probably, but I'll disagree with the latter point: the second sentence started going on about how this actually gives you more rights as a user (we even have a TL;DR in the document that is to be merged basically saying "we don't want your data" :D)

2025-09-25 14:24:49 GMT

- reply

yeah, it takes effect in a week, hence why it's not merged yet. you can find the PR proposing it under "Pull Requests".

The #Codeberg hashtag has many asking about private repositories. Our notifications have _completely_ exploded, and our exposure to feedback from "outside our bubble" have lead to us receiving several signs that we can improve our messaging on, such as this FAQ entry: https://docs.codeberg.org/getting-started/faq/#how-about-private-repositories%3F
We're working on clarifying our stance. Here's a work-in-progress pull request that we are working on in real time to clarify what our stance is: https://codeberg.org/Codeberg/Documentation/pulls/660

people often tell me "you know, I like [this project], but there's JUST ONE LITTLE ISSUE THAT is preventing me from..."
and then I say "if I had the time to deal with everyone's one little issues, I'd need a massive sponsorship or universal basic income". i divert a lot of my efforts into helping other people get started, because that, in the long run, saves me time (even if that approach fails sometimes).

hi, happy niri user here since a few days - thank you for your work.
what is important to the project is not your ability to respond fast, but your ability to prevent the hobby from becoming a full-time unpaid job - i still fail at that.
the solution is: on-boarding, then delegate, delegate, delegate. if nobody else is there, tell the people in your issues that you're at capacity and could use extra help.

We regularly publish monthly updates (on https://forgejo.org) and there is a dedicated repository to e.g. documenting meeting minutes and threat modelling / federation design. https://codeberg.org/forgejo-contrib/federation

2025-06-15 18:30:37 GMT

- reply

There isn't an active pull request for federated PRs/issues (PoCs exist), discoverability (PoCs exist), everything is unit tested (now: against GTS as well), there is not a lot of front-facing functionality (yet). A lot of necessary groundwork is ongoing - a lot more work in maturing the moderation tools is also needed, but that has been moving forward because of Codeberg's presence as a massive instance (e.g. user blocking and reporting other users are Forgejo features now).

Hello #Aachen (and nearby areas)! If you're interested in contributing to alternatives of big proprietary platforms (like #Codeberg :D - that being the alternative), I'm organizing a #Forgejo contribution workshop at the @npub1kpa…swv0 on Sunday, 27.04.2025 (two weeks), starting from 13:00.

- a TV trivia game show winner
- the guy that made not one, but two JavaScript engines
- the Dutch government
- people that worked on software that lets them know where every train in Europe is, all at once
- people that got videogames to work on gaming routers
- the person that made a Minecraft server in a scripting language from the 70s
- Linux phone users
- some German government
- furries
- a person that can get Minecraft to run on a PowerBook G4 (30 FPS)
