Hey @nprofile…pw5t, make sure to have Wi-Fi scan throttling disabled in Android's developer options, and then in NeoStumbler set Wi-Fi scan frequency to as often as possible. :)
Something I've recently discovered is that even putting your phone in your pocket while walking in an open area can have a pretty big impact on GPS accuracy, so if you're trying to improve accuracy in a certain area it's a good idea to make sure your phone has a clear unobstructed view of the sky.

Big thank you to @nprofile…2zxu for developing a new WiFi algorithm for BeaconDB, which has now finally been deployed!
You should see much more accurate location estimates for WiFi, and if the data doesn't seem up to scratch, this new algorithm will improve estimates with new submissions.
One major issue with the previous area based algorithm was that continually collecting new data would gradually degrade AP estimates over time, instead of improving them. This is now fixed.

Thank you to @nprofile…dnqd for giving the logo a fresh look! The logo was designed to be more consistent with the font used on BeaconDB's website, and looks much better (in my opinion). It's also nice to be using a custom icon now too 😄

We hit 140M WiFi networks in the database today! 🎉

Massive shoutout to AVee for making some huge optimisations in BeaconDB's map generation code, not only fixing map updates (it was crashing on the new server) but cutting down processing time from ~1 hour to **a few minutes**!

You should now see much more detail when zoomed out, and I've added some filters to help cleanup some submissions from planes and GPS spoofing. Also, map tiles no longer use Cloudflare's CDN.

NeoStumbler v2.0.0 has been released, featuring passive data collection, options to reduce uploaded metadata for your privacy, and a new interface for browsing collected data.
More info here: https://github.com/mjaakko/NeoStumbler/releases/tag/2.0.0

@nprofile…n8fp has written a patch that should help remove outliers and increase the reliability of both WiFi and cell tower based estimates! ❤️
If you notice that BeaconDB seems to be returning an IP-based estimate when you expect it to have enough data to give a more accurate WiFi based estimate, please let me know so I can take a further look :)

@nprofile…wdwh Oh, networksurvey.app does have a built-in GPS logger but I think it only does CSV and not GPX.

@nprofile…wdwh I don't think any of the Android apps currently support this built-in, but I've been running gpslogger.app alongside NeoStumbler and Tower Collector when I'm out to collect GPS tracks too.
I have GPSLogger setup to log to both GPX and CSV, which is synced to my PC with Syncthing. I use gpx.studio to view single GPX tracks, and can easily load all my history into QGIS using the CSV data. It's both cool and scary being able to see patterns in where I've been over the past year or two.

@nprofile…dkva's open source Network Survey app has added built-in support for uploading to both #OpenCellID and BeaconDB!
If you're looking to do some comprehensive local data collection, give it a try: https://www.networksurvey.app/

@nprofile…7mnq 4326 unique cell towers in just a month and a half is insane! I've only discovered 900 unique cell towers with Tower Collector over the past 5 months :P

20 million!?!?!!!

@nprofile…qj8a could you explain how fediverse.info is open? doesn't appear to be open source

We just hit 800k cell towers?!? This jump in new cell towers being discovered is actually crazy. Thanks everyone ❤️

15M networks!!
1M new networks submitted in just the past week, that's insane

2024-12-11 05:07:02 GMT

BeaconDB just hit 14M WiFi networks!! 🎉 There's also been some new features implemented recently:
- automatic map updates! tiles are now regenerated every 12 hours, so you can watch your submissions brighten up the map 🗺️ 👀 - thanks @nprofile…hx36!
- the geolocation API now supports IP-based estimates using freely licensed DB-IP Lite data, returned as a fallback if BeaconDB can't estimate your location
- the map on the homepage now displays 100% BeaconDB data, replacing a map of MLS towers

2024-11-30 12:11:51 GMT

someone's firefox is making bursts of up to 50 requests every 5 seconds. logs show 185k requests in a 12 hour period. that's like half of all requests the server has received over the past week - in 12 hours!! from a single client!! cannot make this up
if you happen to be in poland and use linux with beacondb configured, could you double check if you're running firefox v132? is your isp play.pl? if so, something is very wrong lmao please reach out 🙏

@nprofile…et6n there's a fair few security camera systems that use wifi, you could likely pick them up automatically by wardriving too

Are you a fellow Australian interested in open data? If so, @nprofile…5829 and I are starting up libre.net.au - a new online community to collect, publish and analyse datasets down under. 🇦🇺
We're currently collecting raw pricing data for Aldi, Coles and Woolworths, and we've just started working on an open database of grocery products to support tracking and comparing prices across #Australia.
Come join us on Matrix!

BeaconDB just hit 10 *million* WiFi networks!!! 🎉
I honestly can't believe the amount of data that has been submitted (thank you!), and I'm really excited to see what the future holds for this project <3
Now that there are more contributors, I've increased the detail shown on the map by another level: https://beacondb.net/map/

BeaconDB is now well over 5 million networks, at 5.5M!! The community has been collecting data at an incredible speed and is now submitting ~100k new networks per day. 😎
@npub12yp…gal9 has built a website you can use to see how BeaconDB has grown over the past few months. Check it out: https://beacondb.derpingu.in/
