The good amount of "PHP performance tweaks" blog posts will recommend you to increase max_execution_time and it drives me crazy every time this is sold as "performance advice".
For better performance and scalability, you need to decrease max_execution_time and in this blog post and video I argue why:

I dug deep into our huge dataset of production PHP applications and found: In one third of PHP projects processing takes up 50% or more of the time, and I/O less than that.

Honestly took me a while to give OPcache preloading a try - here is video explaining how to set it up and what types of #PHP applications benefit from preloading, and which don't

@nprofile…utw6 @nprofile…t2cl why choose though? Go has 3 types, all with roughly the same API String, Bytes and Runes https://go.dev/blog/strings
arguing for string classes for just one backend is like asking for just math operators for floats but not for ints.

A few days ago we have released #Doctrine ORM 3.4 - first version that works with native lazy objects on PHP 8.4
In this post on our blog I explain how I think this is going to be a game changer, https://www.doctrine-project.org/2025/06/28/orm-3.4.0-released.html
How to migrate to version 3 - and what is still missing and you should wait for when on 2.x
And a peak at 4.0

@nprofile…utw6 to counter that perspective, $pdo->exec("INSERT INTO") does also not insert at that point if you are in a transaction, so 🤷‍♂️

To satisfy my own curiosity and that of the community, we have built a benchmark to evaluate: Is PHP 8.4 faster than its predecessors 8.3, 8.2 or even 7.4?
See our results:
