Do potatos prefer full sun? The spot they are in gets maybe 5-6 hrs only. If I replant root crops there again I'll probably dig it up and pitchfork it. Otherwise, ive got some deeper in-ground areas with full sun that are far looser deeper down.

Yeah hilling makes sense. I didnt do it with these because theyre somewhat wild grown and wasn't expecting potatos. Well more like wild sown lol. Probably could have done it once they sprouted but I didnt know at the time. Next year I might try an Amish vertica method where they make a round "barrel" out of cow panel and put a bunch of hay in. As the potato sprouts emerge (trim the leaves i think) and keep adding hay through the season until you fill the whole thing. End of season just peel off the panel and harvest scavenger hunt style....

Its in a raised bed but the bed is relatively new and im cheap so its only half full right now... my soil below is very much clay so that could def be the issue.
The substrate on top is decently draining (maybe cam use more vermiculite) but ive got some heavy clay further down... I water the potato patch far less than the other areas fwiw.
