That is true of absolutely every form of custodial Bitcoin, not just ecash. They are all IOUs. However, I wouldn't say "you might as well use Zcash" or some other shitcoin, because at least you still have the ability to interact with the Bitcoin network through your custodian.
Self-custody is always the ideal, though, and we should push all who have even a hint of friction tolerance toward it. We should also be focused on more ways to remove as much friction as possible from self-custody.
This is why I voted for a swiss government digital ID. Not because I need it. But for everyone that wants to use a digital ID to get a publicly issued one from the government. Not from the surveillance companies trying to replace government bit for bit without any democratic influence on their actions.

What is inavitable?
Yes since it is an open protocol, it can not vanish unless no one uses it. But it is totally plausible, that people stop using it before a critical mass found their way in. Insignficance of both those protocols is far from inevitable.
As a general advice this is kind of childish. To hold against giving up makes you unchangable. A human without change did stop learning. A humand that stopped learning is kind of dead.
