我自己深信不疑：灵魂之所以不死，是因为它本身具备某些特质，足以证明它永恒存在。灵魂快速而敏锐，能记得过去，能预见未来，掌握知识，发明技艺，拥有创造力。这么一个充满神奇功能的存在，怎么可能终结？更何况，灵魂是靠自己运动的，它不受外力驱使，也不会停止自身的运作。一个能自我驱动的存在，是不会自我消亡的。
再者，灵魂本身纯粹、单一，不掺杂任何异质成分，所以它是不可分的。而凡是不可分的，也就是不可消亡的。我们从孩提时的学习也能看出这一点：孩子们能非常迅速地掌握看似复杂的新知，看起来就像不是他们第一次接触，而是在唤醒他们本已有之的记忆似的。这表明，在出生之前，灵魂中就已经蕴藏了某些知识。这也是柏拉图用来论证灵魂不朽的方式。
因此，我认为，人的灵魂来自���界，受命于神，驻扎在身体之中，是为了执行一段尘世的使命。而当这段旅程结束时，灵魂便会脱离肉身，回归它真正的故乡。对我来说，这种信仰不仅是一种慰藉，更是对死亡最清楚、最坚定的理解。

所以，就像青春的快乐和事业终将过去一样，老年的欢愉与使命也有结束的时候。当一切走到尽头，一个人就可以无怨无悔地离去，因为他的人生已经圆满。

人生中到底什么才算是“长久”？就算有人活到了传说中塔尔特苏斯国王的年纪，就算像加德斯的阿伽陶尼乌斯那样当了八十年国王，活了一百二十岁，但一切都有尽头。终点一到，过去的日子就都变成了回忆。唯一能留下来的，是你一生中凭借正义和美德所建立起来的名声和荣耀。
时间像水一样流逝，过去的一去不返，未来的又不可知。所以，人生只要过得有意义，就足够了。演员不需要每一幕都登场，只要在他的出场时间里获得掌声，就足够成功。聪明人也不会执拗地在舞台上坚持到最后，而是懂得什么时候该谢幕。
人生短暂，但要活得光明磊落却不难。如果你的寿命更长，也不应怨天尤人，就像农夫不该因为春天过去，夏秋到来而感到痛苦。春天象征着青春，是希望的季节；而夏秋则是收获和储藏的季节。老年就是生命的“收获期”，是对过去幸福和努力的回顾与品味。
顺应自然的事情都是好的，而老年安然离世正是最自然的结果。虽然死亡也会降临到年轻人身上，但那是违反自然的，如同熊熊大火被暴雨扑灭；而老人的死亡就像一团慢慢燃尽的火自己熄灭了。一个青涩的苹果需要用力才能摘下，而一个成熟的苹果会自然坠落。青年之死往往是外力所致，而老年之死则是自然的归结。这样的“成熟”���死，是我心中最美好的结局。
随着年岁渐长，我越来越觉得，死亡不再是可怕的终点，而像是一次长途航行即将结束时，远方渐渐显现出的陆地。我正航行回家，离熟悉的港口越来越近。
