Welcome to the nostrverse @npub1gcu…aug3
Many years ago I worked on a project to make the web visually programable. It was the first project after leaving Odeo (Twitter). It’s funny, pipes was really hot and lots of people were excited about it. At the time it felt like as big a deal as Twitter. You never know what’s happening until later.
Anyway, somebody’s taken it upon themselves to rebuild pipes!

Did you know Nos is running a creators residency to help bring people on to Nostr and promote the ones already here? It’s been off to a great start but we need more people to apply. If you could recommend / share it with creators you know on or not yet on Nostr, we’d love the help!

The US Surgeon General has decided that social media needs warning labels similar to the parental warnings about explicit music in the 90’s… This is a moral panic which has no basis in science.

This feels like a good way to measure concurrent users of a given app. Assuming the vast majority of Damus users keep the damus relay in their defaults. Bot’s would more likely connect, push content, not pull much, and drop the connection.
I wonder if we had a way of calculating concurrent connections to the big relays per unique npub. That’d give us a realtime sense of the ebb and flow of the network… we probably don’t want to collect and unify that data, but it’d be interesting.

The UN issues passports for stateless people, and a few other governments issue passports for people who aren’t citizens. Most stateless people lack identity documents or have them which doesn’t allow them to cross borders. Most stateless people are in the middle east (not just most Palestinians), south east asia, or people of Russian ethnicity who weren’t living in Russia when the soviet union broke up who ended up with no citizenship or passport. Even the US has colonies where the residents have no country, because they’re a US colony, but they’re not US citizens either! They’re giving a non-citizen passport issued by the US government.
There’s about 4.4 million people today who are stateless. They’re almost always poor and disempowered.

Legit I am in love with my friend
I talked to my friend for 11 hours on the phone this week and I still miss them when I havnt heard back in a day!!! Help!!!!!!
My friend was CTO over at friendster and what he said was they had massive scaling problems, but instead of turning off feaures and getting some quick fixes they spent a couple years rewriting the core while ignoring the running service. By the time they got their tech in order a core of users left for MySpace and eventually Facebook.
Friendster was killed by the big rewrite.
Interesting, I’d love to watch it but it’s apparently locked down with region restrictions so only Americans can see Black Twitter: A People's History.
Does anybody else find it impossible to log in to medium? It’s just an endless loop of login, click on the magic link, load the page, end up at the medium site logged out. Same for when i try and login via twitter, google, email, etc…
Clearly SOME people are able to login to medium, some people are able to publish, some people are able to pay. But I’ve reset my cookies, erased everything from medium in my browser, tried all these different ways.. WHAT IS GOING ON?

I don’t even notice that i get much engagement from a repost, a mention / quote post gets a LOT more on nostr. Which i like, because to quote post you’ve got to SAY something.
My guess is that the reposting yourself is a work around to the fact that most nostr clients are heavily chronological…. so good posts get lost if you don’t happen to see it in your feed and we reward people who post a lot with more attention.
Antisocial behaviour happens. We need to be able to address it ourselves, as a community of users in the apps, relays, and protocol. If we don’t then people will revert to centralized platforms.

This is weird, it seems like Instagram has removed all flags from the emojis that they let you select.
This is crazy. There’s no transparency or accountability in this system.

This article by @npub1kf0…kv43 about how she’s been blamed for being a CIA agent censoring the internet is worth reading. We’ve got real issues of free speech online but people going after her aren’t acting in good faith.
In particular this quote really resonated with me.
Censorship: “Strictly speaking, the term applies when the government prohibits or suppresses speech based on its content. Some people reasonably interpret censorship more broadly, to include when privately owned social-media platforms take down posts and deactivate accounts. But in Michael Shellenberger’s written testimony to Jim Jordan’s committee, merely labeling social-media posts as potentially misleading is portrayed as a form of censorship. Fact-checking, by his standard, is censorship. Down-ranking false theories—reducing their distribution in people’s social-media feeds while allowing them to remain on a site—is censorship. Flagging content for platforms’ review is censorship.”
This parallels the way in Nostr labeling, users being able to filter content, and relays choosing what content to host is censorship.
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2024/06/cia-renee-censorship-conspiracy-twitter/678688/?gift=hQ-wAXx9vcfn6GAow-ESV4l120dfYQLPxUagepWugYs&utm_source=copy-link&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=share

This is terrible news, the Stanford Internet Observatory is being shutdown. They’re the research and policy group which has done the best work in researching speech and regulation online. Republican politicians have been attacking them and now it looks like Stanford has caved.
#note1rcs…twck
It’s a very weird world where the Republican presidential candidate has been convicted for felonies regarding his payments to sex workers and the Democratic candidate’s son has been convicted of a gun control law triggering a major 2nd amendments gun rights case. I never thought we’d see a time when Republicans would be fine with affairs and paying prostitutes while the Democrats were fighting for gun rights. So weird.
American politics is weird and broken. We have a system that, by design, is a duopoly. If a new party emerges, it either dies or replaces one of the existing ones. Because of that, we end up with these big tents containing lots of different constituencies and contradictory coalitions.
Take, for example, how conservative black evangelicals are pro-family, pro-life, and pro-business, but most vote Democrat because they’re turned off by Republican racism. Or consider gay Republicans like Peter Thiel, who vote in their economic interests despite it being against their safety and the advancement of the gay community.
There are many ways in which a two-party system doesn't make sense. I’ve lived in two countries with proportional representation, Uruguay and New Zealand. Both have much more stable politics and better systems of coalition-building and compromise. They’re smaller, too, but you can see the US system broken at a state level where the numbers can be similar to those in Uruguay and New Zealand.
Forcing everyone to fit their values and political aspirations into a single party is a mess.
What’s interesting is that as the US becomes more partisan, party members are more likely to adopt the party’s platform, even if it would otherwise not be in their personal or community interest. Only a small and shrinking number of true independents can focus on issues across parties.
Nos Journalism Acclerator partner @npub1uux…ahzv has a good piece about this based on research: #note1dnq…sqc5
What do people think of this? #note13k0…4y3r It seems that Mastodon is designed to share user posts, including private DMs, with anyone who asks for them. Someone with an AI background pulled in a bunch of posts and analyzed them, including labeling the content.
These folks, Maven, followed the ActivityPub spec and the terms of service. They downloaded publicly accessible data using Mastodon servers and services as designed. They then analyzed that data and ran an algorithm to add labels, similar to how every fediverse server does. The difference here is that Maven used machine learning to add some labels, whereas others add labels such as timestamps when the local server downloads the data without using newer machine learning tech.
Bing, DuckDuckGo, and Google also do this; they crawl the fediverse, use AI and machine learning to label content, and display it in different contexts.
The tags that Maven adds are pretty innocent. They are just adding hashtag-like labels for discoverability.
Furthermore, many people are upset that Maven is leaking people's DMs. This is like living in a house where you refuse to have a front door or curtains on your windows and then getting very upset when somebody wanders in and sits down in your living room or looks in from across the street. The fediverse, by design, has no privacy. DMs are public! It says right there in Mastodon that these aren’t private. Nor are Bluesky's DMs, by the way. There is no end-to-end encryption in the fediverse yet. Evan Prodromou is actually working on this, likely adapting the MLS standard, which is great but doesn’t exist yet.
So my question is this: Why does the fediverse rely on unwritten and undocumented norms that are not mentioned in either the specs or terms of service? And why are people constantly surprised when others don't follow these hidden social conventions?
Help us make Nos better. We need to do some interviews with people who’ve used @npub1pu3…tfch in the last 6 weeks.

I think you’re confusing things. The reason it feels cozy is because you’re in a community of mostly like minded people.
If we make Nostr to exist where there can be many communities like this then we’ll be able avoid the push for centralized authority.

The bot isn’t perfect, and there’s part that’s using a large language model and part which is a person reviewing the content before generating a report. If you think it’s bad then mute it or make your own.
It’s the sad truth. For the most part people who get most worked up about queer people are those who are trying to deny something about themselves. Truely straight people not like the lgbtqia+ community but they’re not particularly vocal and vindictive.
It seems Nos works great if you use half a dozen relays or less and follow less than 500 people. That’s most users. But we are working on scaling both on the network side and performance with bigger social graphs.
⬇️ THIS ⬇️ (from Politico)
“#Trump simply cannot beat President Joe #Biden relying solely on the votes of people who think his legal travails are a politically motivated scam, and who cheer Trump not in spite of his transgressions but because of them.
“There are plenty of such people — enough to power this generation’s most important political movement — but still not enough to win the #election. Trump’s only path to victory is a coalition that includes many #Republicans and #independents who find him deplorable but think a second Biden term would be even more so.”

Nostr isn’t free for some of us until it’s free for all of us. And to do that we need to build a space where people and communities of users can set and enforce community norms for themselves. If we don’t build these tools then we’ll not be able to make Nostr for everybody. Nobody’s saying you need to use moderation labels or relays that take down reported content. Just that for people who want them, they can use them. We need good tools for self management. Authoritarians take and hold power because they claim that they’re the only one to keep people safe. If we don’t build in tools on Nostr to help us keep ourselves safe, then people will think their only option is to use a system with opaque unaccountable centralized control over the platfrom.
That’s why I do the work on @npub12m2…e68j and other projects to provide tools for trust, safety, and moderation on a permissionless open protocol.
And if you don’t believe harassment happens, please listen to people like @npub19vv…t562 who helped organize the first Nostr conference in her experience: #note10c9…drsv
Or look at what was said to me today: #note14vm…2jd4
Either we figure out a way to goven ourselves without centralized control or we’ll end up with that centralized control we’ve been fighting against.
It sends an encrypted event to relays for tagr which can decrypt it with its nsec. It’s the same way encrypted dms work but just a different event type.
:-D We do also show mutual contacts in Nos because we feel that is the fastest way to see if you’d be interested in this person’s content.
https://image.nostr.build/1994974e3ee4e4e6cb00131c5119f254b9783bb80e2d194cf1fbe94fa29042f5.png

That’d be perfectly fine. The whole point is that the ratings and labels should be subjective from your perspective in the social graph.
None of us should have a single set of labels or web of trust score. Instead everybody looks at the network from their own perspective.
If you hate me and what i’m doing, mute me, label my identity and content. Then if folks trust you and your views, they’ll probably agree with you. The entire point of this is that single centralized model of trust, safety, and moderation is flawed.
Nostr needs to work with many communities who fundamentally have different ideas of appropriate norms. We need a system that can handle that on the same network and protocol.
We’ve released an open source nostr notification service if you want to use it: https://github.com/planetary-social/nos-notification-service-go
The trick is that notifications need to come from a server which means either you need a bot crawling the relays or a silent notification which tells the local mobile app to spin up and check relays. The latter takes up battery, the former requires a cloud service running.
We don’t have DM’s exposed in Nos but when we do we’ll have notifications. RIght now Nos can handle the encryption part of DM’s but doesn’t have a UI for them.
I’m not sure how Amethyst does it because as far as I recall, @npub1gcx…nj5z was trying to avoid running any services.
We’re excited to release a new version of @npub1pu3…tfch with a bunch of bug fixes and the biggest thing is a reworking of the much maligned @npub14h2…e2sh with a new generation bot we’re calling @npub12m2…e68j.
Users of Nos or anybody can now send an encrypted report to Tagr and it’ll read it, check the content against a moderation AI and also ask the Nos team to take a look as well. If we and our AI agree, we’ll issue a 1984 event report for that content. This solves two problems, one it puts a human in the loop for being able to check / approve / remove reports from Tagr. Secondly it lets Nostr users submit a report to a third party in cases where they don’t want to be associated with the report. Often somebody who’s subject to harassment doesn’t want to label their harasser because it only provokes them. This provides a system of asking Tagr to look at it and make a label if it’s appropriate.
I’m sure there are folks who will hate the existence of content labels and reports. The report part is required by Apple and google. The content labeling using a Web of Trust is how we can make Nostr work as a permissionless decentralized network that’s both free and also safe for many kinds of people and communities. If we don’t figure this out then most people will retreat to centralized platforms. Even 4chan has mods. ;-D

When we interviewed users on Nostr or those considering using it, we heard a few key points. Many praised Nostr for being amazing, friendly, and innovative but felt the platform was dominated by discussions about Bitcoin. While people enjoyed features like lightning and zaps—even those who hadn’t thought much about payments or cryptocurrencies—there was a strong desire for more diverse content. They didn’t want less Bitcoin content; they just wanted more variety. After all, Nostr stands for Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays.
We also heard from creators and journalists frustrated with centralized social media platforms. They found the algorithms opaque and felt pressured to create content that served advertising models, resulting in a constant chase for viral hits. The money they earned from platform advertising was minimal. Some creators have already found success on Nostr, benefiting from direct payments from their audience or through subscription content.
So, how do we bring more diverse content to Nostr? We search for people, get them on board, promote them on the protocol, and figure out what they need to be successful.
To that end, we’ve launched a program for creators and journalists on Nostr. Over the past two months, we’ve been onboarding new people and publications, setting them up with multiple Nostr apps and a wallet. We’ve spent hours with each of them, learning about their needs and teaching them about Nostr. We’ve also reached out to the Nostr community and app developers to help promote these new members.
Our plan is to continue onboarding new folks, welcoming a new cohort of creators and journalists each week. Instead of relying on algorithms to promote them, we’re using the power of humans—the Nostr community. Twitter originally grew this way with its ‘Follow Friday’ initiative, where people shared curated lists of new accounts to follow. It was entirely grassroots, with people helping each other discover new and interesting content.
Thanks to everybody who put this together! So much work has gone in to finding and onboarding these folks and it’s exciting.

We’re building this open ecosystem together.
Yep just took it. Feel free
It was all AI all the time.
Why did that feature ever get added in the first place?
@npub1f4f…f7ql has a really good article about @npub1sg6…f63m’s leaving the Bluesky board, support of Nostr, and the recent interview.
I mostly agree with the article but I think there’s more than just that Bluesky is taking on a corporate platform prespective with the roll out of the atproto. It’s that Bluesky is engaged in a kind of closed protocol design that feels heavy like xml and java. It’s open source like Android is…
My hope is that @npub1pu3…tfch can be the super easy to use for normies app for Nostr. We’ve got a much bigger and more interesting ecosystem of apps. Nostr is a lot easier to work with than atproto for developers. But it’s also super confusing to new users. Wallet setup is hard, registering a username is hard, understanding how to login to nostr web apps with browser extensions is hard. We can solve these problems, but it takes work.
We’re about to launch the creator and journalism residencies to help bring a diversity of content beyond our core bitcoiner community which is sustaining Nostr.
Take a read:

It checks to see if the relays support expiring events and only sends the events to relays that say they’ll honor deletes.
Here’s some more information on how it works: https://www.nos.social/blog/on-deleting-and-editing-notes
Don’t believe the hype. The recent anti-signal media is a smear campaign from Telegram in a fight to keep its marketshare. Don’t trust the closed source app over the open one.
The Telegram “reproducible builds” on iOS only work if you’re running an old iPhone with an old version of iOS that you jailbreak and then sideload Telegram, and even then they’re still encrypting parts that you can’t verify. That’s pretty useless to almost all users of Telegram on iOS.

If you want to have your Nostr posts bridged to Bluesky you can do it now by following:
[email protected] This works by going via https://fed.brid.gy/ which goes takes the fediverse bridged version of your Nostr account from mostr.pub and then creates a parallel account on Bluesky for you. Anything you post on Nostr will show up on Bluesky. I’m not sure if all the replies go back or just the folks who’ve opted in to bridging from Bluesky back to the fediverse.
And if you want to bridge to Twitter you can do that too at connect.nos.social
We’re starting to see a working bridge between Nostr and Bluesky

Has anyone sent sats to a non-nostr lightning affiliated wallet from primal?
The number selection only shows up when you try and send to a nostr user. When you paste in a lightning address and or scan the QR code.
Am I doing something wrong or is primal sending directly to wallets beyond nostr just broken?

Wow, this new ipad advertisement from Apple is so off. What a horrible way of saying all the things you can do with an ipad, by litterally crushing and destroying the previous non-digital way of doing it.
Watch it quick before Apple takes it down and tries to scrub it from the internet.

I don’t understand how the crypto community trusts Telegram which is closed source, has substandard encryption, and actively cooperates with police. Signal isn’t perfect but it’s a hell of a lot better than Telegram. Transparent open funding from the US government and California tech money donations is a hell of a lot better than sketchy Russian and Middle Eastern funders.

What do you like about primal?
Nostr doesn’t have a centralized roadmap because there is no company or ceo of nostr. But I’m curious what it would be for different nostr devs.
Bluesky does have a ceo and company directing the development of the atproto. As such they’ve got an annual roadmap. For folks helping design Nostr it’s worth knowing where atproto is going.

We’ve released a big update of @npub1pu3…tfch in the leadup to the launch of of the creators and journalist residencies.

We’re working on performance and hygine in the app while we also redesign the user discover and search functionality. In the last few months we did about a hundred user interviews with current, former, and future Nostr users.
We found a few things which jumped out at us.
* We discovered that the Nostr community is broadly considered friendly and welcoming.
* Almost everybody wanted there to there to be content on other topics beyond bitcoin. This was the case with both people who considered themselves bitcoiners and also those who didn’t identity themselves as bitcoiners.
* Most Nostr users felt welcomed, but a small number of people were agressive in harassing other users. We need to develop decentralized permissionless solution to these problems if we want Nostr to grow to it’s potential with hundreds of millions of users.
To address these issues we’ve created a program to highlight content about other topics beyond bitcoin. These folks are using bitcoin, they’re being setup with lightning wallets, and promoted in the app to help them be discovered without the centralized algorithms. Once this launches it’d be great to welcome these creators and journalists and validate the business model of micropayments and subscription content over zaps.

New cars are a privacy nightmare: #note1y2a…2sd0
They’re not only monitoring everything the driver does and reporting it to credit agencies without their knowledge, they’re also surveillance machines which send data of everything around them to data brokers. American politicans are banning TikTok in the name of privacy but not passing any privacy laws or caring that new vehicles are recording and selling all activity that takes in public and is visible from the street.

Ugh. So there is this web3 social protocol called friend.tech which apparently doesn’t do much except let you buy your way in to mod privileges on chat rooms and a bunch of custodial wallet stuff. I played with it and the it seems like the only part of the app they focused on was the crypto trading part.
Anyway surprise surprise the token almost immediately lost 98% of its value.
Projects like this are why even calling your protocol decentralized is considered a dog whistle for web 3 scam.

Google is changing their search results a lot based on their LLM experiments. This feels like a fundamental shift in how the internet works for people. It’s drastically reducing links to third party websites and focuses on both the AI driven results and then tons of links to video content mostly on youtube.
So we’re seeing both LLM’s summarizing content hiding the original sources and also creating a environment where a huge portion of the content on the web is LLM created.
This is a mess that threatens to break the internet as it currently exists. The shift is going to be massive, disrupting most internet businesses and by extension the broader economy.

This! Nostr’s freedom is for resisting tyranny and creating a commons that isn’t owned by a corporation or government. It’s freedom to control our own public spheres. Freedom to set norms that make sense to different communities who have different standards. It is not freedom so that you can be an asshole where you impose harassment on people. You’ve got the right to speech but nobody has the obligation to listen to you, display your content in their clients, host your content on relays, or quietly leave your content unlabeled/reported.

I’m pretty sure there are millions of Einsteins who are trapped in poverty or don’t have a champion like Einstein’s mom. Have you read the story of what his mom did to get him educated. It’s epic.
And Hawkins would have died of ALS if he wasn’t incredibly well supported by family, private money, and the UK NHS. He’s incredibly rare in that he’s lived in to his 70’s only because of constant 27/7 care.
We can be incredibly innovative if we support the people we have. If everyone had access to the support we provided the Einsteins or Hawkins of the world we be much more innovative with 2 billion people.

I don’t actually get why this is a problem. We’ve got 8 billion people right now. We don’t need that many people to run the economy. As new tech continues to develop we get more productive. If we steadily grow in productivity we can produce the same economic output with fewer people. The income and wealth per capita goes up. In the case of Japan their GDP is flat but the the Japanese people are better off because that same GDP is spread out to fewer people.
With the environmental impact of humanity, it’d be a lot lower with 2 billion instead of 8 billion people but we could have higher quality of living.
And isn’t this the best way to reduce population? Slowly through people having fewer kids? Want to have a lot of kids. Go for it. Most women are choosing fewer kids as they get more economic and social power. It’s a hell of a lot better than China’s one child policy, disease, war, or famine.
Yes we need to pay people to take care of the elderly. But we could do that the way Singapore does it. They don’t tend to put the elderly in institutional care. Instead they pay family members to take care of their elderly. Just like raising kids in a family is be than an orphanage, or other group child raising like happens in some christian communes and kibbutzes. Most people provide better care of their parents and grandparents than any nurse in an institution could. And it’s a hell of a lot cheaper, it’s just there is no companies pushing for these polices like there is for care homes.
We can handle massive reductions in population over a few generations humanely without destroying the economy.
These kiwis have a crazy color! Tasty too.

I’ve known the people running this fundraiser personally for a few years and as much as you can trust me, i absolutely trust that they’ll use the money for what they say. They’ve got family in Egypt who are well educated professionals who will make sure it gets used for getting as many of their family out of Gaza as possible.
I think this is a potential great vision for Nostr as something unique and different from existing big social media platforms.
“…A truly sustainable and resilient digital public sphere is possible and is actively being created…. A public sphere supported by these three legs:
1. Consists of many different platforms with a wide variety of scales and purposes;
2. Users can navigate with a loyal client that aggregates, cross-posts, and curates;
3. Is all supported by cross-cutting services rooted in interoperable data.”
https://publicinfrastructure.org/2023/03/29/the-three-legged-stool/
What do other folks thing? Is this a viable vision for Nostr?
In a couple days I’m going to a symposium on social media middleware. In Nostr, that’s everything that isn’t the client, the relay, or the events. All the services we’ve built around Nostr which make it work. I’m going to give a brief 5 minute talk about how we do middleware in Nostr. How we host content with media severs, how search engines work on nostr, wallets for payments, spam detection, nip-05 name servers, and moderation bots like the ever controversial @reportinator.
We spent so much time talking about how to make Nostr sucessful, what users need, and how to avoid centralization. I'm looking forward to a discussion about how we build these services in a way that's open and permissionless to operate on the network. In prep, they've collected a bunch of articles on the subject which I thought would be really helpful for people using and developing Nostr to read as well. So i'm sharing them here.

This is super exciting, i'm looking forward to playing with this as i think it's a great interaction model. We have a bit of a stories interface in Nos, but as flushed out as this. I especially like how stories is combined with sharing.

Non-compete clauses in employment contracts are a terrible way to shift power away from workers and in to the hands of companies. It’s great that they’re now banned in the US. This should have happened a long time ago.

Not all creative or artistic endeavors is particularly good. I also don’t love the term, but do feel it fits.
Some folks who are called creators are actually curators, which should be valued, it used to be, but now feels like a nice way of somebody saying they find and steal others work to republish.
That feeling you get when somebody requests a feature you already implimented and deployed….

They haven’t said, but Jay the CEO of Bluesky was a developer working on ZCash for a couple of years. Some of the other folks have experience in blockchain projects as well. I think folks shouldn’t jump to conclusions based on the current user base of Bluesky. The current users didn’t want them to open up and decentralize, and that’s the plan from the start, and it’s slowly happening.
I also know that there were talks about merging bluesky with reddit’s decentralization project, but that fell apart because the reddit folks really wanted to use their own token, similar to farcaster. Whereas the bluesky team wanted their core protocol to work without any core integration to a token or coin, more similar to how Nostr works.
What I suspect will happen is that bluesky adopts a similar hybrid approach which is what we have in Nostr. Some clients like primal use a KYC’d custodial wallet with apple’s approval and ability to buy sats via apple pay. Others let you use a custodial third party wallet like Alby via NWC. And yet others integrate with entirely non-custodial wallets.
There are a lot of regulatory issues, both with governments and appstores. It’s not as simple as saying, KYC/AML be damned. For example, Primal on iOS is a hell of a lot easier to use zaps because they’re following rules that make apple and regulators happy. Sure you give up privacy and pay an apple tax, but it’s SO MUCH EASIER to setup.
I mean the feedback is going to make Nos look not as good as it does now because we’ve only got full localization in to English, German, Traditional and Simplified Chinese.
https://crowdin.com/project/nossocial
What’s crazy is half the team speak Spanish and even some of us use the app in Spanish and we’ve not kept up with making sure it’s fully localized.
Anyway, we’d love help. Getting all the Nostr apps translated is a great way for non-developers to contribute.

Anybody played with Farcaster’s frames? It’s basically kind of taking an event and having it render with a html frame for some sort of interactivity.
It’s in someways a web based and cross app version of @npub1xts…kk5s’s idea of noscript. I kind of like the idea of frames. Like bluesky’s custom algorithms which are easy for third party developers to make and support, frames give developers a way to create a microapp.
Think a poll, or event, or even a little game. Remember back when Facebook had lots of apps. Some were stupid and annoying, but a lot were fun or interesting. Causes had an app which raised tens of millions of dollars by creating an interactive way to find charities and donate to support them. I feel like if we had something like this in Nostr, it’d be used and cool.
How might it work?
A nostr event could indicate that a type of ‘frame’ was able to handle its content. If the client wanted they could load the micro app from a web url, or perhaps something more decentralized, and hand the event content to the frame, which could then render something in a little html frame. Then that frame micro app could ask the enclosing web app for information about who the current user and permission to write new events and display a new frame state. This would be nifty and wouldn’t be too hard to learn.
https://docs.farcaster.xyz/learn/what-is-farcaster/frames
I see it in Nos with these relays.

I put a 24 hour timer on it. It hasn’t yet been 24 hours.
I disagree. Bitcoin and lightning is nifty, i’m glad we have it. But it’s not what makes Nostr really special. Nostr revives the promise of Web 2.0 where it was easy to make social apps which built upon each other with little or no prior permission needed. The way we can have dozens of different kinds of apps with the same user and some of the same data is fundamental.
Artifact’s AI algorithms sucked. You read or like one article and then all of a sudden thats all you get. Also writing something about articles you share and being more intentional about what you want to share is important. A fully automated system is a bit soulless.

I’ve heard it a number of times. But im glad it’s not as widespread as i worried.
Yeah I agree the bot gets it wrong a bunch and especially flagging stuff incorrectly. We’re building a way for us to look at each report it makes and retract (delete) the mistakes. We’re also constantly tweaking it, mostly to reduce its sensitivity.
It’s an experiment.
What nostr clients create and / or use kind 1984 report events?
Nos creates them and uses them as content warnings only if the report is from someone you follow.
#note10j8…vjye
Yeah that’s what we found, even folks who liked or were neutral about bitcoin wanted to see posts about other stuff. We don’t need the enthusiastic bitcoiners to stop doing their thing. We need other folks and easy ways to discover a diversity of content and people.
I think it might be as simple as we don’t encourage it in the apps. Look at how warpcast works. Simply putting it there in the post UI does a lot to change how people post. At the moment groups / channels / communities are a kind neglected part of Nostr.
https://image.nostr.build/b409fa439133fc19822cb8381becb15b5d4e6dfa2a574118dc70170de821b37b.jpg

The mobile apps are required to have reporting functionality by Apple and Google. Some web apps have it and some don’t. Each app also decides what to do with reports, some with settings and others are just hard coded.
The reports are for people who want them and relay operators to decide what content they want to see / host. Some people are want to be trolls but then get upset when other people troll them. They want freedom for themselves but not other people.
Just because there is a Nostr report doesn’t mean there is any centralized authority which could take action on these reports. That’s not the way Nostr works.
I stood up on stage at both Nostr conferences and quite literally pointed out examples of offensive and harassment on Nostr. Almost every Nostr developer saw it in person or watched the video. Everyone was very polite, even when we didn’t all agree, which is fine. Nobody assaulted me. I’m going to be speaking at Nostriga in August. I expect the same reaction then, some agreement, some people who disagree, and a lot of productive debate.
I’m sorry to hear that you’re such a snowflake about what some stranger says that you’ll threaten violence and go to jail. Personally I’m not so easily offended. You’re welcome to run our open source nostr bot and publish a report on everyone of my notes. I don’t threaten people with violence to silence their speech like you’re doing.
Perhaps you should consider meditation as it seems like you’ve got a lot of angry feelings.
Welcome to nos! We’d love your feedback on your experience with the app.

Nobody's asking you to use this bot. Nobody's asking you to follow it. Just like nobody on Nostr has any obligation to host or view your content.
All @npub14h2…e2sh does is provide an opt in way of choosing one kind of content labeling. Hell at this point we don't even opt-in the @npub1pu3…tfch users. It's got 24 people who follow it!
I think there should be many different ways of doing moderation. All that this bot does is provide one take, which users can choose to use or not. There is no centralization in a bot with 24 followers posting to a single relay.
Do you really think that all the Nostr developers would do all this work only to say, oh hey, let's have centralization after all?
Censorship is about suppressing speech, but somehow you're saying that my speech, which you're choosing to see, is suppressing your speech? Just use an app that doesn't support kind 1984 events. Use relays that don't support kind 1984 events. Mute bots you don't like.
You also might want to google me before you think that my projects are doomed or that I've just appeared on the scene. ;-D
I believe some Nostr apps support this. We're planning on adding it to @npub1pu3…tfch. You can also mute, follow, or ignore any nostr feed, including those like @npub14h2…e2sh who are making reports you're not interested in seeing.
The US Constitution 1st Amendment is about what the US congress does with regards to actions by the US government covering Americans. Nostr was not created by Americans, it's not run by Americans, and it's definitely not a project of the American government.
I write open source software on an open source permissionless protocol. Relays are only centralized if you choose to, if you want to only use the Damus relay, then you're choosing to give @npub1xts…kk5s authority over what content you can publish or see.
If you're so concerned about this issue, i strongly recommend you setup a relay, i recommend: https://github.com/hoytech/strfry
And develop a plugin to strfry that rejects all kind 1984 events.
Here's the instructions: https://github.com/hoytech/strfry/blob/master/docs/plugins.md
And if you want to run a service that reports all of my content, you're welcome to do so. Here's the code which is open source and you're free to use and modify as you see fit. https://github.com/planetary-social/reportinator_server
See, i'm not telling you want to say or do, go for it, but all I ask is that you realize free speech only works if it is for everybody.
I’m not the snowflake demanding somebody else stop using Nostr how they like. You’re the one demanding I stop posting stuff on Nostr that you don’t like.
So why are you all upset about my ‘crass’ labeling of your speech? Why do you get free speech to say what you want but somehow I shouldn’t have the same free speech rights to comment on it?
In our user research, we found that most people joining Nostr get turned off and leave when they have somebody harass them or when they see harassment. So a way to protect free speech and also address these issues are to provide a way of users to choose labels and filters to shape their experience. It empowers relay operators to choose what they want to host, and users to decide what they want to see in their clients.
Nobody's telling you that you can't say whatever the hell you want on Nostr, but it is giving people tools to shape their social experience.
We see lots of women join Nostr, love what it offers, and then be harassed until they leave. This has happened many times. While you may want a platform which feels like 4chan, lots of others don't. You should be able to have your flamewar fun time while others don't have deal with that.
Nostr is held back because of the reputation of the content on the platform, not the quality of the apps and features of what we're doing. I'm saying, we should be able to use the protocol with communities of many norms.
Look at how many people are accusing Nostr with being a pro-nazi platform...

@npub13th…wvcs I appreciate your concerns and what reportinator is right now is a flawed experiment. Sometimes it helps sometimes it gets things wrong. Let’s talk. Also I think there are some straight up bugs where it should be reporting a post and not a person. Or where it flags people talking about being harassed as harassment. I also think this is about content labeling so users can be empowered to shape their own experience, the name “report” comes from appstore requirements and is causing a lot of confusion. This can be better.
We should build good tools for connecting Ghost and Nostr. I think this would be a killer feature which would drive creators to publish to the nostr paid long form content apps like highlighter.com, letr.co, yakihonne, and creatr.nostr.wine.
One thing which has come up in our user research is that most journalists and creators are using tools to manage their publishing to social media platforms as opposed to the apps that people use to read / reply / share content. We need to work with those tools.
#note1a6a…wy6q
On my way to get an MRI this morning I walked past a window where I saw a woman running on a treadmill - with a view of Central Park. The weather was perfect for running outdoors, and Central Park is a runners nirvana. Which raises the question - why indoors when she could be running in the park?
🤔🤦
The goal of reportinator is to provide a service that people can opt in to using for content warning. It’s not perfect and we’re not telling anyone they have to use it. Don’t like it? Mute it. Don’t host its events on your relays.
It doesn’t always get it right, but we’re tweaking it. We’re also working on adding an easier way for people to review and edit or delete reports.
Our goal is that there should be many different reportinator like services with different takes. The Thank God For Nostr folks can do one consistent with christian values. The sex workers can do one from the perspective of embracing sexual content but helping protect those same creators from harassment. A bitcoiner might make one that labeles all non-bitcoin crypto content as “shitcoin propaganda”.
Relays can then decide what content and users they want to host, having content labeled makes that process a lot easier. Most relays already have algorithms to decide what content they’ll host and what they reject. This just gives them better tools. If you don’t like the policies of relays then run your own!
What app are you even seeing these in? Kind 1984 & 1985 events are labels and shouldn’t be displayed as if they’re notes. Some app confused about how these events are supposed to work.

The sentiment is good, and we need a way of protecting user privacy and data. The problem with the way apple decides whether or not they’re collecting data and what counts as third party.
If an app developer doesn’t look at how their app is used then it won’t improve as fast as the apps that collect a lot of analytics. Where are we losing users, does this new design work better, which of these two ways of doing something is better. That is all user data collection, even if it is never used to for ads or commercially.
The other issue is third party data sharing. Under apple’s rules using a sass analytics service is considered exactly the same thing as selling all user data to data brokers for resale. It’s insane. The cost of running everything without any sass services is really high. And for what? Posthog and others committed to not using or selling their customer data.
With Nos we run our own notification system which talks directly to apple, but all apps that use a service for notifications are sharing data with third parties.
I think most developers lie or ignore apple’s rules about hosted sass services. But that just means they’re vulnerable to being taken down.
So yes. Don’t collect what you don’t need for bug / crash reporting, don’t sell data or give it away. But current appstore rules don’t really cover those cases at all.
The press release went out April 10th! It’s totally new.
I think this didn’t get picked up enough in Nostr, but @npub108p…yev6 is launching building a substack like competitor on nostr, called letr.co.

awesome, sorry i flaked on getting mine done…
This is about content creators. Making hardware is hard, but maybe find funding elsewhere like https://geyser.fund/ or opencollective.org
In part of our launch of the Creator and Journalism Accelerators note1z866al6xs9xhnlqgwt0lkxr9lrynstyc52ls29sej96hfxpwxzws5u3m9u some people have asked why we're doing this on Nostr and not ActivityPub and the Fediverse. It's a good question, and the answer for me is about the way both the protocols and the culture of the people creating them work. I wrote this out here in a reply, but it deserves it's own post. So here's my why Nostr instead of Mastodon & ActivityPub.
There are a lot of things that Mastodon & ActivityPub can’t do.
* User identities are tied to a server; if the server goes down, you lose your account, as happened when queer.af had their domain name seized.
* Users can’t migrate between servers. In some servers there’s a system where they can request a migration, where they can stop using one account and point their followers to a new account, but server admins need to allow this, and your followers don’t automatically follow your new identity on a new server.
* On a single server, it is impossible to change your username!
* Fediverse servers have total control over your account and data; they can see all of your private messages or write new ones on your behalf.
* The fediverse is a network of fiefdoms, each server admin having total control over their users. Often they are benevolent and use their power to decide what behavior is acceptable on their server, but it’s opaque. Most fediverse server admins keep their moderation and defederation decisions secret. So, users must choose a trust and safety regime without any understanding of the rules and how they’re enforced. When combined with the very limited ability to migrate between servers, only with server admin's permission, it’s a problem.
* Each kind of fediverse server is isolated. You can use a Peertube instance to federate with other Peertubes for video, or Mobilizon for meetup-style events, or Pixelfed for Instagram-like photo sharing, or WriteFreely for blogs. But each of these is isolated. I need a new account on an instance of each of these servers. They all run the same protocol, but they aren’t actually interoperable. You can’t use a single fediverse identity with your profile and followers in Peertube, Mobilizon, WriteFreely, and Pixelfed. You need a totally separate account in each one. With Nostr, you can use dozens of apps all with your same identity, content, and followers.
* The fediverse has no privacy; there is no system of end-to-end encrypted messaging. In Nostr, you can have private direct messages and even private groups that are encrypted. Nostr even supports encrypted private file sharing.
* The fediverse has no system for micropayments. The zaps on Nostr enable easy ways to fund creators and journalists with either one-off tips or subscriptions to unlock paid content, like paid Substack newsletters or OF accounts.
* Lastly, and most importantly for me, the culture of fediverse server admins and developers is vindictive. It’s a community that attacks people who make proposals or want to try out new ways of using the network. That is why there is no search, no ability to choose an algorithm, no private groups, no private messages, no system for payments, etc. Those have all been proposed or even built, but the fediverse culture has gone after those people, punishing them for suggesting new ways of doing things.
Oh NOES! Shit. Sorry for the confusion. It's the problem of doing active development on stuff and seeing what happens. Part of the confusion might be @npub1j60…d7ua did leak her personal nsec and made a new one.
It wasn't a compromised nsec, somehow in doing experiments with various nostr apps and code we cloned pablo's kind 0 profile note and published it as our own.
I'm so excited to formally announce a new project to onboard a diverse range of creators and journalists to Nostr. Please join us and help #grownostr

I like how the Jews approach it. You start life with your first breath and end it with your last breath. Ergo fetuses are part of the mother, not a separate life - until the point of viability when they can survive on their own.

I can’t find the paper now, but I read some research showing that when somebody believes in something, like a conspiracy theory, showing them evidence which contradicts that belief does not reduce people’s confidence in their belief. Instead showing somebody that there is evidence their belief is wrong, only reinforces those believes.
Showing somebody who believes in a conspiracy thoery that they’re wrong only reinforceds their beliefs. It’s this crazy self-reinforcing cycle.

Having been immersed in Christianity as a kid, with exposure to many of its denominations, I generally agree.
But there are exceptions… I still very much respect many Episcopalians, Church of God and other liberal branches that truly follow the teachings of Jesus.
That said, when you look at the bulk of Christian history what stands out are the wars and the oppression carried out falsely in the name of Jesus. This is continues to be very true today with the Christian Nationalists trying to force their beliefs on others.
What’s your definition of “wokeism”? To me it’s the acknowledgement of uncomfortable truths. So I can’t quite wrap my head around equating it to communism.
I generally agree with you in relation to communism. Socialism is a really broad concept. On the more extreme bits we agree. On the more mild bits we disagree. I’d also say that Jesus was a socialist (far more so than me). So I’m surprised with you having an issue with it.
But basically I don’t see those 3 things as equivalents. Each is quite a distinct thing.

It used to be that the economy had to add 250K jobs every month just to tread water. So 300K doesn’t mean anything substantial happened - it just means we didn’t lose jobs and might have added a few.
Ah, the irony… The guy who gave homophobes their cherished bible was actively bisexual…
“The King James Version of the Bible is the preferred version of many fundamentalist Christian churches — and the one being hawked by Donald Trump in a “God Bless the USA” edition … But what some promoters of the King James Version don’t realize or — at least ignore — is the queerness of the king who commissioned it.
“James, known formally as King James I of England and King James VI of Scotland, would likely be understood as bisexual today.”

To me you’re a third party, but given you’re just an npub and not amongst my friends of friends nor do i have any context about who you are, you’re not a trusted party to me. To others you might be. That’s the way it should work, it’s subjective. Any person or group should be able to provide a trusted third party moderation service.

There’s a github repo: https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips
Here is the process:
Criteria for acceptance of NIPs
1. They should be implemented in at least two clients and one relay -- when applicable.
2. They should make sense.
3. They should be optional and backwards-compatible: care must be taken such that clients and relays that choose to not implement them do not stop working when interacting with the ones that choose to.
4. There should be no more than one way of doing the same thing.
5. Other rules will be made up when necessary.
You can see and participate in the discussions for proposed nip’s here: https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pulls
The conversations tend to be pretty technical but there’s always a need for diverse kinds of inputs in the design process.
Building a system that doesn’t have affordances for users being able to protect themselves is exactly that, suppressing people’s voices by any bad actors who have a lot of time and/or money to go after somebody.
We’re working on a moderation bot that will accept encrypted report notes, then the bot can review the content via AI and a human, and then issue a report on that content. Basically it’s not always a good idea to be public about your report. Also clearly we need the ability to vet reports, because often the report is not accurate or isn’t enough. So i an say, sure bob reported jane as being as spammer, but I don’t agree, or this moderation group looked at Jane’s content and decided Bob’s report didn’t have merrit. Sure others might agree with Bob’s report, but the point is that we need a second level, and the ability to have some reviews.
Yes, but we could create filters for new users and use a web of trust to filter out these accounts. Eventually with good LLM’s you could create troll accounts that do the work of being legit before they start their abuse, but for now we’re not yet facing those issues.
Or recruit women to work on clients and nostr services. A more diverse team building the apps will mean that the app serves the needs of more kinds of people. Talk to users! Talk to people who’ve decided not to use your apps. Ask open ended questions.
Read this: The Mom Test: How to Talk to Customers and Learn If Your Business is a Good Idea when Everyone is Lying to You
If we can’t make a social media ecosystem where people feel safe enough to share then they’ll go somewhere else. It’s like a dark ally in a city without anyone doing public safety. You can walk down these back alleys but it’s risky. If you’re strong and have guns you’re fine. Or if you’ve got a security guard. Or if you have a lot of social capital protecting you, most people won’t mess with you.
But on nostr we see folks who don’t have that power or protection be attacked with death threats for posting a selfie or doxxed for publishing an accurate content report. This kind of harassment silences speech. We need tools that let folks feel safe enough to share and build communities. Otherwise they’ll opt for the evil mall cop an corporate social media platforms because at least there is some safety in that authoritarianism.

Yeah, primal runs a cache but amethyst doesn’t. In this case, there’s no easy way for a nostr app to figure out what relays hold the posts by @npub1988…u2yx Which i linked to.
It’s a problem. One solution would be for a client to push a mentioned / reposted note to its relays. Another would be for you to add wss://purplepag.es to your relay list so you can always find what relays an npub is on, that works IF your client uses inbox/outbox model.
I think we need a better solution, like a DHT where you could publish your npub and what relays you’re using, signed with your nsec.
It’s on all of these relays:

wss://relay.shitforce.one

Yeah, i’m kind of glad to see this go away. Effective Altruism was a movement which was fundamentally anti-humanist and authoritarian. There was an EA meetup in wellington recently, and i was like, wow, this thing is still trying to happen.
The indieweb ( indieweb.org ) is a longstanding project to try and make an open social media ecosystem that can be built with simple public websites…. It’s both been incredibly influential and also completely failed at getting mass adoption. Mostly because it’s creators all wanted to build their own software from scratch, it is all hacker hobbyists and no people building software for a less technical audience.
That said, i think we should look at what they’ve done and learn from them for Nostr.
For example, this post on sharing intents: #note1kjp…3wy8
Yeah, meta only seems good in comparison to the mess that is Elon and Twitter. The truth is meta is more powerful and less ethical. We’ve seen in a thousand ways and it’s not going to change. The CEO of Signal, @npub15s3…6r6y has a great essay about why the US push to ban or force a sale of TikTok is a terrible idea.
#note1u7x…de8r
It’s worth reading. She says that people on the political left need to realize there are major free speech issues with social media platforms. This shouldn’t be a left right divide.
She says “The problem here is the platforms themselves. There is something deeply wrong with the whole form. With their self-reinforcing business models, their reliance on surveillance, and their role in undermining an independent media ecosystem and replacing it with their monolithic feeds.”
Which I think all of us working on Nostr would agree with.
She concludes with “The world would be better if these platforms were dismantled and their revenues shared with the people, professions, and communities whose livelihoods and public spaces they’ve worked to foreclose, and if a more localized variation on digital spaces for deliberation, discussion, and discovery could be constructed in their wake.”
Now Signal is open source, but has rejected the idea of federating their servers as it would slow down platform development and endanger user privacy. So in some ways she’s running a platform.
As a committed leftist i’m very uncomfortable with the way some of my fellow travelers aren’t defending free speech online.
What do the numbers mean? I tried checking me to @npub16zs…92l7 and since we work together but i got numbers MUCH lower than the ones in your video. And I also assumed it’d be how much npub1 trusts npub2.

You can ban it from appstores and ban traffic that looks like nostr traffic at the router or ban access to nostr relay servers. If people use tor on a device that lets you install your own apps, yes you can get around it. Banning the mobile apps would block most users. In this case, appstores do know what age the user is, and could not let users under 18 install social media apps, including nostr apps. A teen could either just change their birthday on their device or use a vpn to appear to be in another state. In terms of computers, tor would be the best way around being blocked.
It doesn’t matter, these laws will never be held up in the courts. It’s pure political theater.

I think we can implement a composable moderation system similar to bluesky, where you can choose moderators or operate without any. The default should be some reasonable level of labeling and guardrails. Users should be allowed to run with no moderation or just with their network. Those just don’t work great for new users, nor a bunch of other communities who would greatly benifit from Nostr. Freespeech doesn’t mean you’ve got the freedom to force others to listen to you. ;-D
I listened to this interview as a podcast, talking to Jay Graber about bluesky. Again, a lot of what’s said about bluesky also applies to nostr when advocating for a protocol.
Notice the difference in focus on censorship and monetization. We can’t just be claiming those are the two things that make nostr important.
https://theverge.com/2024/3/25/24108872/bluesky-ceo-graber-federation-social-media-decoder-interview
This is why we need DVM feeds better supported and integrated in to apps so users can choose their algorithms.
Most relays do out of the box because all the widely used relay software supports it.
Well the main pushback is that the fediverse uses a very server / instance based model for content moderation where as Nostr users a more web of trust / social graph model. So to the other parts of the fediverse, it looks like all of nostr is mostr.pub and it’s got no content moderation at all.
The fundamental problem is a disconnect between paradigms of how the network is governed.
Nothing. I think it’s great that you’re posting erotica! Reporting doesn’t cause content to be taken down in nostr. It just creates a content warning in some apps.
Nostree is a start but I agree we need something much better. And as a hosted service connected to nip-05 it should be a viable business too.

Technically you could create a second delete event to remove the first delete event and then repost the original event. I don’t know how relays would handle it. But technically it is possible.
Thanks! We’re looking forward being able to use this for encrypted notes, not just DMs, in NOS!

To be able to anonymously send is cool, I wasn’t aware. The question that came up was the desire by people to receive anonymously.
Anybody explored anonymous zaps? One thing which has come up in user research is there are a set of users who want to receive zaps but don't want the world to know that they're receiving them. Thoughts?

I’m not sure @npub1jlr…ynqn, because the UX of primal and damus are a lot better becuase they do run relays. We’ve been experimenting with proxy and caching relays with @npub1pu3…tfch and found that it does help a lot. It is much easier to add capacity to a server, scaliing horizontally, than it is to optimize the on device performance in an app on a low end mobile phone. What’s more, Nostr tends to use tons of bandwidth requesting the same content repeatedly.
I think a potential solution would be clients connecting to and using proxy relays, but then we’d need people running those. At the moment most proxies tend to be closed.
I’m using a lot of nostr apps everyday and also testing proxy relays.
I gotta figure out why my lightning address keeps getting removed from my profile.

I hate how mastodon doesn’t support changing user names. So stupid.
Nostr in many ways is the successor protocol of secure scuttlebutt. There will be new protocols.
I’m not sure about algoeithims but algorithms simply aren’t a thing we can avoid in software. Fundamentally software is a series of mathematical equations organized together in algorithms. It is kind if like saying you want an ocean without water. There are oceans of other liquids on other planets, but here on our planet, with computers as they are built today, all software is algorithms.
When it comes to social media and the way out software decides what to show us, every possible way choosing data and showing it to a user is an algorithm. It might be just show the posts from people you’ve chosen, either in the order in which they publish them or in which the client receives them, those are algorithms. That choice has a bias and rewards some behavior while punishing others.
Take for example @npub1r0r…q9ac who posts a LOT of short posts. If we use the most frequent posters get more exposure, then we’re focusing on building an audience of direct follows, getting your posts shared, and posting a LOT. We could have an algorithm which focuses on showing what’s trending in your network, or one which prioritizes showing you posts with lots of comments, or a feed that shows you content which has the most reports.
There is no escape from using algorithms to decide what content you will see.
What we need is a system where users have agency, where you can choose your algorithms, see the trade offs in each, and the way to pick what works for you. The algorithm isn’t the problem, it’s that is a monoculture that’s picked by platforms. It flattens culture and makes us vulnerable.
Facebook actually had researchers try presenting users with content / social graph/ engagement aware algorithm vs chronological feed. What happened was a chronological free showed less news, less diverse view points, and lots more viral shared content. It had no change in people’s political views at all. The biggest take away is that the cohort of users given the chronological timeline used it less and switched their time to social media apps that did give them a more customized timeline algorithm.

We can’t escape the algorithm. First because that’s how all software works, but also because users prefer something other than the chronological timeline we think we want.
Over at Bluesky they’ve got 40,000 algorithms to choose from in a way that’s easy to discover, use, and make. Nostr has a few dozen to choose from because for the most part we combine the algorithms with the clients. Only a few clients use the DVM feed functionality that lets us decouple the algorithms from the client.
We should embrace and support user agency to choose and create algorithms that they can control. We need DVM feeds to be shown in clients, documented, integrated, and to be fast. Relays need to be able to support requests of a list of note ids not just full note content so we can make the system fast and low bandwidth.
We can do this. You can choose an algorithm which pulls from the lists your friends manually curate, or from some advanced LLM predicting your interest. If we have a hundred thousand algorithms then the power of each one diminishes. Maybe you want to have a feed that helps you find the shit posters, while I want to hide the flame wars. Both are fine.
Let’s not reject algorithms, let’s admit that they’re baked in the fundamentals of how the technology works. Let’s take power over them instead of the large platforms using them to control our public sphere.

We don’t really have something like that with Nostr. Should we have something?
Because even at their most unreliable, commercial aircraft are incredibly safe. We’re much more likely to die getting to the airport than on the flight. :)
Yep. Something like that. I, of course could implement it in @npub1pu3…tfch but haven’t yet.
If KOSA passes in the US we all lose freedom on the internet.

Both @npub1acg…p35c and I moved from the US. He’s on some sheep farm a couple hours north of me. I’m based in Wellington.
It is easier to get a visa here than it is to the US. Everyone is incredibly friendly. Come for a visit.

npub15udps0gkavgwqjm3tljxqmfcaqtgd95dh3h072msy5pkjefasahsp9qgd3 Some nostr clients do highlight posts based on how many zaps they’ve received. Which is a kind of paid promotion.
@npub1yye…hmd0 I’m really curious what do you like about fastcaster and why.
We’re also considering disabling straight repost in nos and instead encourage people to make quote posts. The idea is the latter adds a lot more to the conversation.
I think we need to update clients so you don’t see a ton of copies of a repost when a lot of people repost the same thing.
I tend to say nostr is a social media protocol, it works more like other internet protocols like the web and email than a closed plarform like instagram, twitter, and facebook.
It seems to work for a somewhat technical user.
Me too. It’s one of the first things i say. Nostr is a decentralized protocol but not blockchain and there is no coin or token needed. You can use bitcoin lightning for micropayments but tons of people never set that up and Nostr works great without the payments.
So many people have been scammed by cryptocurrency projects that they’re looking for scams. In this way bitcoin gets painted with the same brush as all the other projects.
I think their onboarding experience is better than nostr’s, they have good follow up emails, good recommendations of content and people to follow. And in particular their way of encouraging groups is what we’ll need to do if we want nostr groups to take off.
I never thought pornhub would be leading the anti-kyc resistance.
Interesting to see farcaster got basically no use until January when they git a big spike.
It’s not actually an open social media protocol but it is close enough to nostr that we should be paying attention.
https://dune.com/pixelhack/farcaster
I’ve tried a few different LLMs for coding and found they’re good for really constrained issues with well known apis. For example it is good at svelte and swiftui but even when you remind it and give examples it hallucinates about ndk and Nostr actually work.
Sometimes they just get stuck and stop providing anything useful at all until I start over from scratch.
I am hopeful as context windows grow that we’ll be able fix that.
Has anyone tried this new one yet?
I use vscode but I keep meaning to try out zed, it’s by the creator of Atom which became vscode.

I think it’s because @npub1gcx…nj5z isn’t running any relays as part of amethyst. Where as Damus has a big read / write relay and primal makes extensive use of a caching relay that also provides things like notifications, follow counts, etc.
Ugh. The remote signing / login thing is supposed to fix this.
That is annoying. You could use nsec.app or a browser extension to login and that wouldn’t happen. My guess is most folks do that and forget the annoying experience of folks who use a pin to unlock their accout.
The country of Aotearoa New Zealand is very geographically isolated. Similar but different from Australia. Here almost every ecological niche that an an animal could occupy has been filled by some kind of bird. But birds that evolved with almost no predators. When the Māori arrived and settled the country about 800 years ago they didn’t introduce that many animals, but they did have to adapt because most crops from more tropical Polynesia don’t grow here. The Māori ended up hunting the giant Moa birds to extinction, but for the most part their impact on the environment was lighter. When the Europeans started showing up about 200 years ago they introduced many more plants, animals, and intensive agricultural. The native birds had evolved in a world without predators. The impact was huge. Australia had evolved in the opposite direction, with intense competition, marsupials taking the dominant spot in the ecology.
Anyway. This is a really round about way of saying that today the biggest problem for the native fauna are rodents and cats. There is an effort to rid the islands of these predators, except for the cute cats, those are allowed to kill billions of birds because they’re friendly and adorable to people. Some of the smaller islands are already predator free. I live on a peninsula at the very end of the north island. They’re working out from here to expand the zone for native birds. Across the street from my house there are traps. I’m writing this because I saw the guy servicing the trap this morning as I was having coffee.

Anybody else notice primal is slow tosay? Normally it’s the nostr app i used with the best performance but i think the influx of tiktokers is overwhelming the caching relays.
I think we should reach out and do a kind of campaign promoting nostr as a response to the US trying to ban tiktok.

I use njump, i didn’t even know Nostr.com had a viewer. That link doesn’t seem to work for me, is it a universal link?
Mostly we don’t see spam on Nostr because it’s not precieved as big and valuable enough to target. There is a lot more work to do.
Amethyst is good in that it supports tor, but we need relays to support tor as well so you can connect to the relay end to end encrypted without leaving through an exit node.
They could ban Nostr apps. And until we’re able to easily run Nostr over tor, the network traffic would be easy to ban.
This is great, thanks!
Can we get something up on nostr.com directing folks to nostr.org and making it clear at least for now the .com is a developer docs site. I know you’ve got some ideas about what to do with the .com in the future, but we can start getting SEO juice and traffic to the user facing nostr.org site while that’s in the works.
We don’t talk enough about how Digg committed suicide by going to war against it’s users.
Bluesky’s announced developer grants, $10k in all…
https://techcrunch.com/2024/03/11/bluesky-is-funding-developer-projects-to-give-its-twitter-x-alternative-a-boost/
That’s such a huge difference from the way money’s being spent in the nostr ecosystem with OpenSats being able to provide substantial funds to tons of projects and developers.
I don’t mean to post tons about bluesky, but I think it’s important that nostr devs and community be aware of what’s going on beyond our space. The biggest thing I’ve heard talking at a bunch of conferences lately is how concerned folks are about the meta business model for Threads and how the rest of the fediverse and bluesky lack a business model.
If I say nostr uses bitcoin, then we end up in an ideological debate. If I mention lightning, only crypto folks have heard of it. But if I say nostr solves the business model problem that other open protocols have by providing an easy way for fast cheap micropayments, folks get really excited. I think this is a powerful marketing message. Nostr has micropayments to sustain the ecosystem and creators. Those payments use bitcoin lightning, we don’t need to hide that, but it’s a tool. If we start with bitcoin, then we bring up all sorts of debates. If we say, nostr’s micropayments solves a critical issue, then folks get really interested in nostr.
Apple’s going to allow sideloading of apps on to iOS but with lots of limitations.
The app developer has to be in the EU, the user has to be in the EU, they’ve got to have been an apple app developer for over 2 years, and to have over a million installs of your app. Plus a ton of other requirements…. I love your consistent position on the need for opt-in content moderation. It can take a real toll for some folks mental health to see hateful stuff on their social feeds everyday. Social media can be a place where the bounds of free speech can be tested… and it can be a quiet respite from a challenging world. It’s the users choice in the end.
March Bluesky Protocol updates:
https://github.com/bluesky-social/atproto/discussions/2293
Mostly they’re working on labels, we’ve got labels in Nostr but we don’t seem to use them as extensively as they do over in bluesky. They’re also getting ready to open up and release Ozone, their moderation labeling tool. I know most folks here aren’t keen on composable moderation, but I think a moderation system you can choose with alternatives is probably closer to what normies are looking for. The nostr model of using your network and web of trust works once you’ve GOT a network, but it’s not great for new users.
The good part about being able to choose your moderation system on bluesky, is you can choose a minimalist one that only removes CSAM (Child sexual abuse material) which is illegal to have. With that option, and your own PDS they only real choke point is the GDS server which they’ve still not got a model for federating.
On a different point, I had a conversation with some of the bluesky folks at the Princeton Social Media Protocols Workshop ( https://dsmw.cs.princeton.edu/ ) about lightning and bluesky. It seems like it’s pretty straightforward to add lightning wallet addresses to bluesky profiles, they’ve got a more constrained schema system, so we’d need to publish a schema and validator for it, but with that, it should be easy to do something like Nostr Wallet Connect on bluesky. Maybe do it like npub.cash so it just works?
I quite like how unified everything is on this side of the ditch. Of course NZ is the size of an Australian state. It’s easier being small.
Platforms with moderation policies aren’t inherently bad. Good for business really.
Unfortunately a lot of people who claim to be libertarian (cough Ben Shapiro) ruin the stew.

Some thoughts about Nostr & Custom Feeds
A bunch of nostr apps have custom feeds, but they’re oddly one of the few things which aren’t reusable across apps. Over on bluesky, they’ve got 40k custom feed algorithms and it’s a really popular thing.
For example, here’s a feed of just pictures of moss: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:x3cya3wkt4n6u4ihmvpsc5if/feed/aaacynbxwimok
In particular though, there’s feeds for different takes on what should be for you, trending, top, etc…
We don’t have that in Nostr, and i wish we did. I’m going to outline a way in which i might be possible for us to get there.
First off, we’ve got to understand how the third party feeds work in bluesky. The way it works is that each user has a single PDS (think relay) where they post their content. That relay is then indexed, by a global index server (there can be multiple), which may or may not keep a cache of a users content.
An index is a third party service which clients can connect to and say, i’m bob and i want the feed “only posts by bobs”. That feed service does not keep a copy of the content, nor does it provide it to the clients. Instead when user Bob requests the “only posts by bobs” feed, it checks the user requesting, then it’s indexes of content, and returns an array of message id’s (hashes) for what it thinks is a good bobs feed. The clients then request that actual content from the relay (PDS) servers, or their caches. There’s even a service for no-code creation of custom feeds, skyfeed.app.
This would be pretty easy to make. A nostr relay service that instead of serving the full content, just lets you request a feed, and it would return message event id’s for the events in that feed. You’d then go request that content from relays that are hosting content. We could do it with dynamic lists too, but then we wouldn’t be able to customize it per user.
I’d like an easy way for developers to make and deploy custom feeds without having to have the whole own nostr app the way they need to do it now. As an app developer, i’d love people to be able to build their own feeds without me doing the work of tight integration.
I know that Damus has nostrscript which does some of this in the client, but it only works on one nostr client, and hasn’t really taken off yet. A server based solution might be a lot better. Something we can support that works with nostr, but lets people make many feeds.
Thoughts?

Me too, we stopped working on plantary.social to build nos.social on nostr.
YOOOO queer platonic relationship works in this case too! I didn’t realize it was such an ambiguous umbrella term. Now I feel happy.
My fav is self sabotage 🥵
I think of frog and toad as my model.
There’s this girl I know and I have unspecified feelings for them. I am not sexually attracted to them. I am aesthetically attracted to them. I don’t want it to be labeled as a romantic relationship. It’s hard to describe but I am attracted to the idea of frolicking around on hills of green, laced by a crisp morning dew. I am attracted to the idea of having tea with them and getting high. I am attracted to the idea of writing letters to them if our distance apart ever expands. I am attracted to the idea of working out disagreements and having a certain mutual cherishment.
I think that romantic relationships as a label is more about wanting to be perceived as others in a certain way more than anything else.
I am starting to not believe in romantic relationships. And I have a lovely nesting partner whom I care for very dearly. We settled on “queer platonic friendship” a while ago but we do things that could be considered “romantic” but I don’t know if that justifies the label. Not because I don’t hold them in very high regard, but because western romantic relationships carry a certain possessive root that I find to be antithetical to my beliefs.
I got so many looks when I wore my skirt to the nearby cafe. I guess that means I will have to wear it more until people stop staring.

Glad to hear it! Oh and we’re pushing a fix to that bug which mangles mentions. 😳
Aotearoa New Zealand might soon be a country without broadcast television news. The primary commercial TV station, the Disney / Warner owned Newshub is being shutdown in June.
https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/mediawatch/audio/2018927944/discovery-warners-to-close-newshub-in-june
And the only remaining other broadcast news will be the te reo maori language tv network and its sister English language tvnz news. The problem is that now the government has just announced major cuts to tvnz’s news departments.
https://thespinoff.substack.com/p/tvnz-braces-for-bad-news-as-seymour
What happens to a country that loses all TV news? Do we have alternative models for funding news on that level? Will we revert to small independent collectives of journalists using their iPhones and social media? I’m no big fan of traditional broadcast media but I’m concerned we haven’t developed a good alternative while the old model dies.
Will the folks like my mom who watches the tv news every night only get their news from facebook now?
Clearly we are trying to build an alternative together here, but it’s a little scary to see how fast the old order is collapsing.

Why are online news outlets going out of business? I think we can and should have a way of users to have a chosen third party moderation service in nostr. We need there to be multiple compatible providers and users can opt out all together. I got a demo of their ozone moderation tool a couple of days ago and I’m wondering if we could make an adaptor to have it work for nostr too.
Nostr works for folks who develop a community here, but we don’t work well for new users who are trying to find or cultivate a new community. We can solve that problem, in fact we ned to if we’re going to be able to see nostr’s full potential.
So mostr.pub pushes fediverse content to the following relays:
wss://relay.mostr.pub
wss://relay.shitforce.one
wss://nostr.coinfund.app
And the primal cache reads in posts from mostr.pub so I’ve you’re using primal, you’ll get mostr posts from the fediverse. We’ve got a couple issues to address. First, there’s a TON of content on mostr.pub, so lots of users won’t want to just add it to one of their read relays, but getting requests for content is how mostr.pub knows to go pull it down from the fediverse. If you’re using a client with a global feed, then you really don’t want relay.mostr.pub because it’ll overwhelm your feed with random stuff.
One option is for nostr apps to publish both the repost note, and the event that is getting reposted to its relays. Another is more use of caching services to pull that content in. In terms of making sure mostr knows what actual fediverse content nostr users are looking for, we need a fix for that too.
I’m not sure this is so much an amethyst fix as it is a need to update some of how we’re running relays and caching relays.
So, thoughts @npub108p…yev6 ?
@npub1c85…6lkc You think women shouldn’t have the right to vote?
It shows up in NZ too.
Honestly if we’re going to make something easy and custodial that works nicely on mobile apps installed from AppStores, it’s going to involve KYC. Just like how most people buy btc from exchanges. The primal wallet isn’t meant for you. It’s about creating a clean accessible experience for new users.
The GOP nominee for governor of North Carolina, Mark Robinson, would like to revoke the 19th amendment which granted women the right to vote. That’s a pretty extreme position.

Oh. There are alternative camera apps?!
Or use connect.nos.social to cross post from nostr back to twitter.
I agree it’s complicated but we should be careful about stopping innovation because of legacy data or apps. We’ve got what, a dozen widely used apps that display kind 1 events. We can do that upgrade. Users really want to be able to edit their own posts and i think collaborative editing opens up a whole new world, a new paradigm of social media.

I like the idea. Especially if we use some AI to summarize and firmat the content. A personalized newsletter. It’s been on my wishlist for a long time.
Yep. We talked about how the fediverse has a kind of city state model of trust and safety, bluesky has a choose your moderator provider, and nostr uses a network / web of trust model. I thought nostr was pretty well received by the academics.

When we feel we’ve got a compelling app on iOS then we’ll add android. At the moment we’re pausing anything which isn’t focused on a compelling experience which people use and would feel sad if it went away. I was introduced to bitcoin by Primavera who traveled the world only with bitcoin in 2012.
Most countries no longer put stamps in passports but i only once filled up the double pages passport.
Oh 70 something. Not even 1/3 of all countries. This world is bigger than we think.
I read this as “immolation community” and i was surprised that an immolation community could sustain itself and grow.
Let’s cultivate more solarpunk on nostr.
I don’t think you really understand humanity until you’ve learned another language and lived in another culture.
In my personal experience the best way to learn a language is to move to a place where it’s the dominant language and find a lover who’s a native speaker. You’ll be functionally fluent in a few months. And it’s a lot more fun than duolingo.
We could put expiration timestamps on reposts. ;-D
@npub1j60…d7ua our product lead on @npub1pu3…tfch made a mistake and accidentally leaked their nsec. She’s written up an essay on it and why using a keypair is still a much better than a username and password on a server.

Nifty it seems to work. I found a bug and a UX confusion.
I can’t figure out how to get sats out. But getting them in worked and was easy to get started. Is my problem that I’m doing it wrong or is that still a feature to be developed?
Lastly I think there’s a bug in the dm bot. https://i.nostr.build/DV39.jpg
I came across @npub1sg6…f63m's original twitter thread announcing Bluesky and I'm reminded at what a great explanation it is of what Nostr has become.

I’m a big fan of local first software. It doesn’t always make sense, but it does put the user in control, it’s permissionless, it scales horizontally, and it’s pretty nifty.
Some nostr apps with embedded relays ARE local first software.
There’s a new podcast about local first software which I think would be interesting to nostriches.

I’m rabble.nz on bluesky.
This is not intended as trolling, but what are the chances that we get all of that cheap energy, abundant safe AI, and an economy which supports everybody’s basic needs without quantum computing?
Won’t bitcoin need to be replaced by an equivalent which uses quantum resistant cryptography? And also I get saying that bitcoin mining isn’t the carbon emissions problem critics say, but how does it create cheap energy? Feel free to send me to some FAQ as I’m sure this has been answered before.
“Since 2023-12-04 Fedifinder has no X/Twitter API access and can't find ActivityPub, ATProtocol and Threads accounts anymore.” :(
So I tried the npub.cash thing, and honestly it’s not so easy to setup. I know it’s a proof of concept, so I expect things to be less than smooth. That’s fine. I’m providing feedback in the hopes it gets better.
It took several tries to login, when I tried with Nostore and my iPad, it didn’t work at first. After a few tries it did, and I was able to try and claim a username, but then it presented a QR code on my iPad to pay. The mobile wallet apps I’ve got can’t scan a QR code from a web page I’m looking at on the same device.
I have a wallet in Primal… nifty, it’s powered by Strike and I was able to load up some sats via apple pay, not a good exchange rate, but it was damned easy. The thing is, Primal’s iOS wallet lets me scan a QR code using my device’s camera, send sats to a nostr contact I have (which is a really cool feature) or to a lighting address… I’m not sure how to tell if something’s a valid address or if it validates them, what happens if you paste in a bitcoin wallet address or say ethereum one? The thing is, npub.cash only shows a QR code. How do I scan a QR code on my phone from my phone? Dunno. I’m guessing npub.cash could have given an option to copy the lightning address as text… but that’s not there yet, that would have been helpful. I failed and gave up on npub.cash, went to sleep.
Then today I decided to give it another try. I went to my desktop, then used nos2x to connect, the login worked fine, but then I also got a QR code, this time on my computer. I thought, great, I’ve got an Alby wallet… but when I went to go scan the QR code in Alby it says I need to enable the camera. The thing is, the QR code is right here, on the same web page from which I loaded the Alby extension. What’s implied is that I should maybe print out the QR code? Or perhaps take a picture of it on my phone, then present that to the computer camera? All so I can make a transaction from chrome to a chrome extension in the same window?
The npub.cash payment screen suggests I copy the QR code… copy it and do what exactly? As far as I know, the wallet apps don’t accept pasting in images of QR codes, at least not that I’ve found.
I was able to open up primal’s wallet, scan my desktop QR code and pay the 5000 sats… So I now have a cashu wallet and address of
[email protected]. Not sure what to do with it, but it was easy to setup… Mostly because the full version is at @npub1wmr…
[email protected] and I think it worked without me even logging in… kind of a we’ll hold all of your sats until you login with nostr to retrieve them. Which is cool.
I don’t really want to learn how cashu or lightning work under the hood, because if we have to understand them to use them, then it’ll be too complicated still for most people. This is getting closer.
Lastly, the code claims it’s open source, but that’s also not strictly true. It appears to be published publicaly on GitHub without a license at all, so while we can view the code, we can’t modify it or use it for our own purposes. This seems to be an oversight that applies to all of Lightning Digital Entertainment’s repos: https://github.com/orgs/lightning-digital-entertainment/repositories?type=all
What’s the word to describe the shared space on nostr? There’s the twitterverse, fediverse, er uh metaverse… but what’s Nostr’s? Nostrverse? Nostriverse?
Yeah although it’ll be an interesting experiment because I’m not sure how they’ve setup with banned account names and new federated PDS’s. Worth a try I’d say. The account would only have the posts if it’s still on their servers and they allow migration
I think we need to make it clear that Nostr is not a blockchain project with some speculative token. It is one of the things I say early on when describing Nostr. Sure Nostr supports micropayments with bitcoin lightning but it doesn’t use that to function. Lots of people use Nostr without any connected wallet.
Tell me more about your Nostr journalism project.
@npub1yxz…5qvv has a great elegy for Vice which goes in to how the big social media companies, especially meta, killed the company with rug pull after rug pull.
Although it doesn’t mention nostr or any emerging solution, this gets at why what we’re doing is important. We’ve got a solution to the payments part of the problem, we know how to talk about that. This essay gives us a roadmap to talk to publishers and journalists about why they should build their business on a permissionless open protocol, eg nostr.

Yeah, I’m not telling folks to stop their enthusastic bitcoin content. Just that if that’s all we get, we’ll stagnate and slowly wither away. We need the ability to find, share, curate, and create lots of kinds of content. Sure, use zaps and lightning to tip people and pay for content, but for almost everybody those should just be features and tools and not their focus. Humanity is incredibly diverse and within every person there’s a multitude of interests and communities.
When I was at a conference last week, a bunch of people were like “bluesky is cool, but i’m really worried it has no business model. how are the developers and users going to make money to sustain the network.” Well Nostr has an answer to that. The value to users is that there’s an easy low cost micropayments system. They don’t care if it’s run with the traditional banking system, bitcoin, some custom token, ethereum, sea shells, or even a centralized db like paypal. The value to people is in what it lets them do, not how it works under the hood. Honestly even all the censorship resistance, soverignty over identity, open source, open protocol stuff is not particularly interesting to most people. They want to go where the interesting people and content are. We’ve got to make that compelling.
Lack of interoperablity? I’m curious about that one. It feels like it’s curation work, similar to what flipboard does, which is super valuable yet we’re not quite sure how to pay for it.
Was @npub19md…6vzk funded by an OpenSats grant and the money ran out? Or did folks just burn out? Or was there another reason things wrapped up. It might have been clearly stated but i missed the underlying reason.
I think the Nostr report was a ton of work but we’re all worse off as an ecosystem now that it’s not being published regularly. We used to have a similar feed on Scuttlebutt and it was great but it got dropped because it was a lot of work and we didn’t have a way of paying for that work.
This is the kind of thing I’m talking about when I say we need more non-bitcoin content on Nostr. It’s by a bitcoiner but not about bitcoin.

I WANT to like the Vision Pro... but it's not ready.... That said, probably the only way to get it ready is to get it out there to a larger audience. But if early adopters like @npub1yl8…vz34 who are iOS devs and even have an app in the Apple Vision appstore are returning theirs... it's not a great sign. At least Apple has very deep pockets to keep this running for years at a loss.

Why does the nifty integrated wallet in primal's mobile apps not work on their web app?
I’m hearing more and more people switching to ghost from substack, medium, and wordpress. It’d be cool to get a plugin to publish to these long form posts to nostr. Especially if it’s tied in to helping them get a lightning address and being able to charge over nostr for their paid subscription content.
The term normie dates back to the 1950’s and in general is used to describe people who are not a member of a subculture. It’s been used to describe straight people, non-punk, non-hippie, non-etc…. Very recently it’s been used by online gamer and crypto communities.
Nobody is a single identity, we exist in a multitude of spaces. So we’re all normies to someone else’s in-group.
Wow, Apple’s pulling some underhanded shit. They’re using the DMA requirements for alternative appstores, to ban PWA’s in Europe. This is on top of them implimenting third party payments and appstores in such a way that nobody will ever use them. But to find a way to kill PWA’s by using EU regulations pushing for more openness.

Crazy story. I didn’t know Air New Zealand completely closes their checkin desk an hour before departure. I arrived 57 minutes before departure and they were nowhere to be found.
I was worried I’d missed my flight, but I had an idea. If I could get to the gate they could print me a boarding pass and check my passport. Then I had a chicken and egg problem. If i was on the air side of security I’d be able to travel, but I couldn’t show my ticket that I didn’t yet have.
I quickly looked for and booked a miles flight a few hours using miles on American. I checked in and was able to go through security. They were wondering why i was going in to the wrong terminal, but let me through. I then cancelled the ticket I had already checked in on.
Once I got to the Air New Zealand gate for the Auckland flight they were happy to print my ticket. The only downside was i had to leave a knife i was given as a birthday present. The info desk said they’d turn it in at lost and found and i can have someone pick it up.
I’ve done the book a ticket, check in, go through security, and cancel it without flying a few times. Mostly to say goodbye at the gate or greet someone arriving at the gate. Just like you could when I was a kid. This is the first time I did it to catch a flight after check in closed.
Anyway, now I’ll be home tomorrow.
Goodbye San Francisco

Today’s my birthday, it’s the longest birthday I’ve ever had, and one of the longest ones possible. My birthday will last 44 hours for me. I believe it’s possible to have a single calendar day last almost 48 hours.
I woke up in Aotearoa New Zealand, GMT+13, and am traveling to San Francisco GMT-8. Just after I take off from Auckland, the day will start in San Francisco.
I believe to maximize the length of an experienced calendar day you could travel from either Big Diomede Island in Russia to Little Diomede in Alaska, but neither island is inhabited so there’s no regular flights or ferry service. Samoa and American Samoa have the international dateline going between them and there are flights and ferry services between them. And the weather is more pleasant. So if you wanted a 48 hour day, you could start in Samoa, then close to midnight, hop on a plane and fly the few minutes to American Samoa. Geographically a ton of South Pacific islands are west of the international dateline but choose to use a TimeZone and date to the west of it so they can facilitate trade and cultural integration with the rest of Oceania.
Timezones are weird, really weird. Did you know there’s an open source flat file database which encodes all timezones that have ever existed? Including details on all changes to daylight saving time. It’s crazy, it’s own flat file format. The file is maintained and created by ICANN, the same weird international body that manages domain names and ip address allocation.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tz_database
I find ICANN and its sister organization the IETF fascinating. They’re twin organizations, started as the internet emerged from a US government owned, university run network in to something all the rest of us are using. When ICANN was created, there was worry that the US government shouldn’t own and govern the internet for everybody. Many countries wanted to put internet governance under the UN, but there was a worry that if the UN controlled governance of the internet, then it wouldn’t keep it’s free wheeling ways, and would end up being a much more tightly regulated and censored place than it was through the 90’s or even as it is today.
So a totally new kind of organization was created, a multistakeholder international governmental body. ICANN’s mandate was strictly limited to issuing domain names and allocating IP addresses. The organization’s mandate would not extend to what people did with those domain names and ip addresses. Servers physically existed in sovereign countries, if you moved your data to a new country, then that government was now responsible. The sleight of hand was meant to let technologists play jurisdictional games, which is what made all sorts of things on the internet possible.
What does a multistakeholder governance model look like? Instead of the UN, where only nation states get a seat at the table, or a standards body run as a consortium of businesses where companies get a say in the rules, the ICANN process said that nations, companies, and civil society (NGO’s, social movements, religious institutions, etc…) are all co-equal in running the organization. ICANN is staffed mostly by diplomats. The meetings are held every 6 months in some random place in the world. ICANN collects a tax from domain name registrars, who then sell the ability to register domain names to registries. It’s this super weird, global government, which collects taxes, and has transparent public meetings. It is the opposite of what any conspiracy theorist thinks of when they hear global government. Anybody can show up and get a say, participate, but they keep everybody away by being very very very boring.
ICANN is run by an endless web of committees, it’s sister organization IEFT which defines internet standards is the most boring version of anarchism possible. The IETF moto is “We reject kings, presidents, and voting. We believe in rough consensus and running code.” In IETF meetings, you express your opinion about the discussion through humming! Yes HUMMING! It’s so weird, ICANN is an all encompassing global government which collects taxes (they call them fees) and its sister is this anti-authoritarian anarchist standards body.
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc7282
Honestly, I think both organizations could be a model going forward for how we manage the world beyond and after the dominance of the nation state and corporations. They’re far from perfect, but they do kind of work. Really truly different kinds of was of organizing society. And the internet is as big and complicated thing as we’ve made as humans.
Anyway, all this is a weird round about way of saying, it’s my very very long birthday.
I find creatr to be too hard to use. I’m sure it’s easy if you’re the kind of person who uses bitcoin and lightening outside of Nostr, but for normies this is hard. If i could pay for it FROM a nostr app, with a zap, then it’d be easier. But as it is, it’s like go use x software, then y software, then copy this code (relay address) and put it in the right spot. As a proof of concept, i like it, and i’m excited about being able to pay for subscription content on nostr, but this needs some user testing.
Looks like Chris Dixon had friends bulk order tons of copies of his book in order to game his way on the New York Times best seller list. Kind of like how he games the system with A16Z crypto investments.

Does anyone else switch back and forth between nostr apps when composing a note or a reply? I find I do it when i need to look up a bunch of posts and people i want to reference. It’s easier to pop between apps with one for navigating and the other for composing, rather than doing it all in one app.
We’ve been doing a lot of user interviews and one of the things which comes up is users either avoiding Nostr because they think it doesn’t have delete or complaining about the lack of delete.
We published some of our research results last week: #note1h8d…9x25
I think we should start working to find creators who are joining and support them. Help make lists of creators, send them zap's, repost their content, promote them to new users. Let's welcome and support creators. The way to get Nostr to have content beyond bitcoin is to support other stuff, embrace the diversity. And yes, show them we've got a financial model with lightning payments so they can directly get paid. The zaps are important, but we need to zap folks for posting all sorts of things.
I’ve seen so many people say they won’t use Nostr because we don’t support delete. This is really frustrating, because Nostr DOES support delete, it’s right there in the NIP’s! We’ve got delete in @npub1pu3…tfch, but most apps don’t expose the functionality to users because they either don’t like the idea of delete or can’t be sure that something is 100% deleted. That misses the point, delete is as much about social signaling as it is about getting rid of the content.
Here’s my argument for how we should think about and support delete in nostr. In case your client doesn’t support long form content, here’s the njump link: https://njump.me/naddr1qq2ksje3g9trxujpxymyxjjlg5ckjmmrtguyxq3qpu3vqm4vzqpxsnhuc684dp2qaq6z69sf65yte4p39spcucv5lzmqxpqqqp65wk06e7u #note1hld…6u8m

I’m exploring a human welcoming committee app idea. How do we find legit new users and reach out to them, welcome them, help them find the people and content that they’ll be interested in and connect them to that community. I think we could beat algorithms which drive us to adiction and advertising with people power, human curation, and community.
We’re also seeing a resurgance of piracy for tv and movies. The streamers are complaining about lost revenue, but the reality is that piracy is what happens when you make your content expensive.
I think normal people sharing their lives is the point no?
I think I've got Damus connected to Alby and then also primal connected to their stike wallet. I'm not sure what's in my profile.

Apple’s announced the most minimal and dysfunctional way of allowing third party payments for digital content in the appstore in order to comply with the results of the Epic lawsuit.
https://www.macrumors.com/2024/01/16/us-app-store-alternative-purchase-option/
It’s basically never going to be used and is useless, both for crypto but also any other kinds of payments, but let’s Apple say “we allow third party payments”.
@npub1r3f…7ex2 For it to work well as an API, it can’t be presigned, but using nsec bunker you could delegate the note signatures to a service.
Has anybody build a RESTful api for pubilshing to nostr? I'm thinking something we could hook up to buffer, hootsuite, later, agorapluse, eclincher, sked, sprout, tailwind, loomly, coschedule, crowdfire, meltwater, socialbee, etc...
Most creators who are cross posting use one of these tools rather than the app directly. They do it to save time, manage access to the apps, etc... Having a nice service that could integrate in to those would be a huge win for Nostr.
Understanding what Threads is doing with the fediverse is important to everybody working on social media protocols. @npub1dqw…cr3q was invited to visit Meta and has a very through write up worth reading: #note1uza…qeg8
@npub1dqw…cr3q was my co-founder on Planetary, the secure scuttlebutt app I worked on before pivoting to Nos and Nostr. He’s very insightful, if a bit long winded.
I’m going to a foocamp hosted by meta next month, hopefully I’ll be able to ask additional questions and keep talking to folks and learning. Getting the big tech companies on board with open social protocols is potentially both dangerous and very powerful.

How can we get more long form content on to Nostr? This seems like a great place for blog posts, substack style newsletters, medium like posts, etc… But it’s not so easy. The wordpress plugins for nostr do unformatted short posts with links.
We added long form markdown support to rsslay, https://github.com/planetary-social/rsslay , but rsslay has some pretty big design flaws which can’t be fixed. It doesn’t act like a normal relay, it doesn’t store anything, instead each time you request an npub it goes and redownloads the rss feed associated, creates NEW events, and provides them once to that client that requested them, and then deletes the events from memory. So if multiple people follow a feed, they’re all slowly getting different versions of the event.
I want it to be easy, nicely formatted markdown, ideally with support for the paid subscription content stuff @npub1l2v…ajft is working on.
Thoughts? Has somebody built something? RSS is probably the easiest way although lots of formatted content in rss is a mess. It needs to be something that can push to multiple relays the way mostr does. It needs to import once, and then scale with the nostr network. Users who comment on the post need to be commenting on the SAME event, not multiple versions of the event.
We’re SO SO SO close to this working, yet somehow it doesn’t.

Happy New Years Nostr.
What a spectacular day to welcome in the new year. Let’s take this time to renew the struggle to build a better common humanity, ending war, occupations, oppression, and borders which divide us. Humans evolved intelligence so that we survive better together, in community. The solutions come from doing the messy work of dismantling old institutions and building new better ones to replace them.

I’m curious about the cold water immersion technique that is used for physical and mental health. In particular I see all these videos of people getting in lakes with ice on the surface or in bathtubs full of ice and liquid water. Nearly freezing water, so around 1c to 2c. That’s really cold. I have gone swimming in water that cold, I’m not a fan.
So how long should we be in cold water and how cold should it be? Turns out it’s longer and warmer than i thought.
According to this research review the water should be 10c to 15c and immersion should last 11 to 15 minutes.

The grants have been huge for getting nostr going but it can’t ever be the long term path to sustainability.
I think the easiest path is either a recurring in app payments for SaaS services. The SaaS model doesn’t need massive scale to sustain the providers.
People think that pro or paid features need to be really valuable to cause people to pay but that’s a mistake. It’s more like giving people something special so they’re appreciated or relieves an annoyance. Slack has tons of features for paid users but it’s really just being able to see and search your past conversations that causes people to pay. Plus things businesses need that individuals don’t, like more control and compliance.
We don’t need huge sums of money to support our current ecosystem, but we do need models that work with thousands of users per app instead of millions.
how do we make it easy for other clients to support consuming these paid feeds / content?
But like in nos a repost shows you the content whereas quote post doesn’t. weird.
I’m curious about reposts vs quote posts. I get tons more interactions when i do a quote post instead of just a repost.
Are folks just not seeing the reposts or is the commentary provided with the quote post the critical thing? Is this a social or technology issue?
English is the primary trade and secondary language in the world, so while Mandarin and Spanish have more native speakers, english is the most widely spoken language today.

Uh we can say they’re infringing on our free speech or civil rights, but the 1st amendment of the U.S. constitution only applies to the u.s. government, specifically congress. Companies can violate our civil rights but they can’t violate the 1st amendment.
this is one of the primary issues we’re looking at solving with nos, but so far it’s not great. finding people to follow and being discovered so you don’t feel alone are critically important for nostr’s success.
Yes, I think we don’t acknowledge enough the tremendous injustice of Colonialism and the way it’s shaped the world today. France in particular never really gave up its empire. There are lots of colonies who were just redefined as ‘part of France’ without an restorative justice for the past. Others like French Africa were given independence as long as the former colonies agreed to use a Central Bank owned and controlled by France.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_of_Central_African_States
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Bank_of_West_African_States
All this discussion on here amongst folks who care about the corrupt influence of central banks, there’s not enough looking at the way France imposed a central bank on it’s colonies in order to keep control.
In the case of New Caledonia there’s real tension between the indigenous Kanak people, the European French, and other ethnic groups. The Kanak want independence but aren’t a majority so when it’s come up for a vote, a narrow majority has voted to remain part of France.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_New_Caledonian_independence_referendum
Friends who’ve visited New Caledonia say they felt the tension of this being a segregated colonial society.
Anyway, it’s part of France.
Tahiti on the other hand has a much lower percentage of it’s population of European descent and only recently elected a pro-independence political party.
https://www.politico.eu/article/french-polynesia-oscar-temaru-france-overseas-territory/
There’s also a bridge from Brazil to France. It’s true and amazing.
Think about how both of these things are possible.
There’s really nothing on this side of the world except Australia and a few small islands. We’re the same distance to India, China, California, and Chile. Far from everywhere. The most surreal thing is the country closest to New Zealand is France!

I don’t understand why hats, beanies, and hoods are banned from the slot machines. Headscarves are just fine for gambling. https://i.nostr.build/laqj.jpg
That’s not actually the trust and safety I’m talking about. Nostr has very few women as active users, in no small part because when women post an innocent selfie they get death and rape threats. Even if there isn’t that extreme reaction we still have people questioning their very existance like the trolls that claim they’re not actually a woman.
When we interview people to understand why they’re not using Nostr, that stuff comes up a lot. People, especially women, don’t want to be harassed and stalked. It doesn’t feel fun and comfortable. They’ve already chosen to use other platforms which are safer.
Nobody is proposing that we be able to ban accounts. More social media without the ability to have boundaries is like living in a glass house with no lock on the front door. I can close the front door of my house, choose I invite over, and generally control my personal space. My preventing you from moving in to my house or crashing a dinner party is not censoring you. It’s saying I don’t have to share with you or listen to you.
Also of course fuck the state and giant corporations, i dont want them seeing everything i say and do either.
I'm so excited about this. So much of our user research is showing that people want to the ability to have safer spaces where they decide who's invited. We see this with telegram channels, discord servers, signal groups, whatsapp groups... if we can make nostr work easily this way, we can combine the intimacy of chat groups with the flexible power of social media. #note1wl8…9yx7
After I left Odeo with its “side project” of Twitter, I went to Yahoo where I briefly worked in Yahoo Pipes and then built a privacy focused location api called FireEagle.

It’s a multiverse with tunnels between them! We’re in the nostrverse, but we can reach out to and connect with the fediverse via nostr…
Somebody’s going to come up with some good spiderverse memes about this all.
What is threads then, the Threadedverse? The Threadiverse?
Did you know you can follow the European Commission on Nostr?
@npub18mm…wg7n
You can follow any fediverse/mastodon user in nostr by simply putting
[email protected] where you’d normally put an npub or nip-05 username. In @npub1pu3…tfch, if you put in a fediverse username it knows to look for that user via the nostr bridge at mostr.pub. I hope other nostr clients add support for this as it’ll open up so you can engage with the fediverse without giving up control over your identity and privacy.
I don’t know, nobody’s researching Nostr in the same way. My guess is no, that Nostr acts more like bluesky and mastodon in terms of use patterns than YouTube.
YouTube is huge, but what does it look like once you look beyond the viral hits? The research team coordinated by @npub1wsl…8r6f at the center for Digital Public Infrastructure has found a way to research the breadth of YouTube. It’s pretty neat play with.
https://tubestats.org/
For example, over all videos uploaded, the median play count is 40, video duration is 67 seconds, creators have a median of 93 followers, and median likes/comments for a video on youtube is 0.
It is hard to get an accurate sense of how big Nostr is by nature of the network. Looking at just what’s written doesn’t tell us the whole story. We can see ‘writes’ in the various nostr statistics sites like https://stats.nostr.band/
That shows us having about 10k daily active users. But in this case a daily active user is somebody who has a positive trust rank and publishes something.
Nostr.band estimates there are 350k users on Nostr. While Primal.net/explore puts the number at 660k. In both cases they’re looking at users who’ve got a trust rank and verified user. Users who are just lurking will never show up in those numbers.
Show how many people are really on nostr? The question is worth asking, because many people are looking at emerging social media platforms trying to pick which one to use. Size and engagement are concrete numbers which help people decide. Should they use these numbers this way, no, but it’s a thing.
There’s the 1% rule of thumb for social media. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1%25_rule It says that 1% of the users will be the creators, 9% are creators or curators, they reply but don’t generate original content, and 90% of people are passive consumers. In the real world, those numbers aren’t right, as every platform has different levels of engagement. What is useful to remember is the general ratios.
With Bluesky we know more about the ecosystem than we do with nostr, due to the architecture of their system. You can see the stats for yourself here: https://bsky.jazco.dev/stats It shows us there are currently 2.5 million registered accounts, of which only half have posted a single skeet (note). We don’t know how many are spam or fake accounts. When bluesky had 500k users, I was told by a team member that their DAU’s were between 1k and 2k. They’re clearly getting a lot more use per user today as they’ve got about 130k unique users posting per day, 90k new followers, and 200k people liking a post. So my guess is their actual DAU is somewhere between 250k and 500k. This is a huge shift, where they’re getting much more engagement per user today than they were 6 months ago.
My guess is that we’ve got between 25k and 75k actual DAU’s on Nostr. I’ve got to get some breakfast and focus on building nos, but those numbers should get people started.
In 2015 I was on a big road trip around South America and in Bolivia they had rules preventing the sale of petrol or diesel to cars with foreign plates. In order to get gas, we had to park around the corner from the gas station, walk over with portable 5 gallon containers, fill them, then go back and fill the truck.
In some gas stations they even had police there to prevent the sale of gas to foreign cars.
But the crazy thing is, they could tell i’m not Bolivian, and knew I was buying gas for my car, which it was extremely unlikely that I had a Bolivian car. The police were perfectly happy to let me buy gas as a foreigner, as much as i wanted, without a problem, as long as i didn’t put it directly in to my car!
When i asked they claimed this was an attempt to prevent foreigners from buying gas for cocaine production. I have no idea why the way they were enforcing it would limit gas for cocaine production, you’d think the narcos, even if they’re foreigners, would just buy Bolivian vehicles.
I thought this was all insane, until I read Seeing Like A State, the state isn’t like us, but it does have an internal logic which you can understand. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seeing_Like_a_State
The internet is weird. I’m listening to a talk by @npub1wsl…8r6f about his research of social media.
One surreal split was the woke / anti-woke fight in pro-meth subreddits.
There’s the main meth group with 181k members: https://www.reddit.com/r/meth/
Then there’s a group who didn’t like the woke politics of the main meth users group, so they created https://www.reddit.com/r/MethWithoutCommunism/ which has 28.5k members.
I had no idea that there would be a political split amongst pro-meth mutual aid groups online.
We’re in the process of doing user research on this and more generally what will make the new user experience work in a way where they stick around and keep using nostr.
Getting private groups will open up nostr to people who can’t or won’t post on a public only platform.

When @npub1sg6…f63m was CEO of Twitter and Trump was president there were many calls to ban Trump from Twitter. There were many people demanding Trump be removed because either he violated the TOS or because they saw Trump’s tweets as dangerous.
While catching up over kombucha at the Square office, Jack mentioned some of these conversations and how there were compelling arguments on both sides. He asked lots of people what they thought twitter should do. So he asked me about Trump and other accounts, like Richard Spencer’s and the alt-right.
I’m very anti-Trump but I said I thought Jack shouldn’t ban him, because he’d face a shareholder revolt. Everyone said that it was Jack deciding things at Twitter and Mark Zuckerberg for the meta empire, but that wasn’t really true. The real power is in the money and that’s shareholders and advertisers.
I can only imagine what a hard and stressful job it would be to decide what can and cannot be said in the public sphere, as twitter effectively was at its height. It was an impossible job, one which shouldn’t exist. Jack did incredibly good at managing to find balance, and everyone hated his decisions because there was no right answer.
The reason for Bluesky, and now Nostr is to make it so no company or person has that kind of control. That the public sphere that is social media shouldn’t owned or controlled by any corporation or government. When something of value is held together without being ultimately owned by a person, organization, or government, the it is held in common.
What we’re building together on Nostr is a commons. By making it a commons that’s held up by our software and contrbution as users, we escape the trap that caught twitter.
A commons where we come together to make and sustain space.
A commons where we can do business freely without someone who can arbitrarily shut us down.
A commons where groups of users can decide the rules for themselves, and everyone doesn’t need to follow some universal set of opaque rules.

Antidotally I run in to tons of Brits who’ve moved to New Zealand, and they all point to Brexit. Sure lots of kiwis have always done their time going the other direction, but it feels like a trend. Even more go to Australia.
The UK inflation is worse than the EU because brexit cut off the low cost / low friction import / export market. In this case it drove up the cost of fish and made fisheries less economically efficient. Labour costs also are driven up as intended by making shrinking the labour pool, which was a lot of the point.
The way #brexit is contributing to the death of the classic British Fish and Chips shop is one of the most amazing self inflicted wounds. The nationalism ended up undermining the economics of the national dish.

Delete is and has always been a core part of the nostr protocol. Essentially Nostr delete is just like on centralized platforms, not all copies of content are deleted when you request servers delete something.
I fundamentally don’t understand why nostr app developers keep insisting on disabling delete and pretending that nostr doesn’t support it. Delete works in nostr and it is a large part of why we switched from secure scuttlebutt to nostr. Delete can’t work in scuttlebutt, but does work in nostr.
Users should be informed that there is no way to force relays to honor your delete requests. And i think dishonest relays should be something we can rate and track in nostr clients. But to say we don’t have delete or edit in nostr is both incorrect and undermining the adoption of the protocol.

This thread is about the UK and how they’re now preventing most citizens from bringing their spouse in to the country. It has nothing to do with the American immigration system at all.
And yes saying your own citizens can’t live with their foreign spouse is xenophobic.
Dunno how you came to that conclusion. The pay gap means it’s easier for British men to bring a spouse over than for a British woman.
The UK is trying to once again one up america with the latest immigration reforms that make it nearly impossible for most Brits to bring their spouse to the UK. Xenophobia just keeps getting worse.

I suspect that the free relays will be run by client developers who want to make sure their app works out of the box. And because they’re running a client they can more easily do spam control on it and justify the cost.
gossip support is in the nos roadmap.

The state is its own unique kind of organization. I’m not a huge fan, i’d rather live in a stateless society, but understand it is important. It doesn’t actually just care about power, it’s more complicated than that.
I recommend you read Seeing Like a State: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seeing_Like_a_State
First off, I don’t trust anything on infowars, they’re criminally dishonest and ran a campaign of attacking the family members of people killed in mass shootings. They aren’t interested in a honest debate about politics or society, instead are trying to bring about authoritarianism by making it so nobody can believe anything from anybody. There plenty of right wing people and movements who are engaged in honest debate about what’s best for society, and I respect that even if I disagree with their views. I’ve been following it since it launched in 1999, Infowars is not that.
Secondly, in the case of New Zealand the changes in excess deaths are primarily due to the way in which that level dropped at the lockdowns and boarder closures in 2020 and 2021, only to rebound after the boarders opened up. Basically the public health measures taken due to covid kept elderly alive and then when things opened up again, those most vulnerable passed away.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/the-whole-truth/132369176/fact-checking-claims-about-new-zealands-2022-death-rate
New Zealand consistently ranks as one of the most transparent and least corrupt countries in the world. There has been so much data released and so much public information that becomes overwhelming. The country has a strong independent press and vigrous public debate. The critiques come from a tiny minority of neo-nazis (yes swastika tattoo neo-nazis), white supremacists, and Christian nationalists. New Zealand has become the target of covid conspiracies precisely because it was so effective at dealing with covid.
Most New Zealanders wanted more enforcement of vaccine rules than what the government implemented. Most Kiwis wanted the borders to stay closed. There was no legal requirement to get vaccinated, but most kiwis would happily have voted to jail vaccine skeptics. The government acted with restraint and respected the views of the small minority of critics.
I feel that New Zealand acted based on good science and public policy in ways that reflected the opinion of the overwhelming majority of the population. Anytime I saw the policies of NZ criticized from overseas, the local opinion was that the government hadn’t gone far enough.
Let me guess… They got it all backwards?

The COP28 conference going on right now is in Dubai. There’s zero chance that this photo is of Dubai. Googling it, it’s of the Munich airport, which was closed due to a snowstorm. Germany gets winters storms which close airports, has for as long as there has been air travel. The language of ‘global warming’ has been dropped because although the average temperature is going up, it’s really more like disruption of the global climate system causing more extreme weather. That includes sometimes more snow or colder weather than we saw before.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the organization and success of #nostrasia and for making nostr.world possible. The immense effort involved in orchestrating such an event is commendable, and I'm thankful for having had the chance to participate.
A key expectation for me was to delve deeper into and connect with the Japanese Nostr community. Unfortunately, despite being in the same vicinity, a sense of connection was missing. The language barrier and cultural differences seemed to be significant obstacles. I struggled to follow the Japanese talks and couldn't engage with the Japanese attendees as I had envisioned. This highlighted the need for more inclusive and accessible communication strategies in future gatherings.
While much about the event was praiseworthy, there are aspects I wish were different. The format, dominated by numerous stage presentations and hallway interactions, was commendable, yet I believe an ideal unconference strikes a balance between these formats.
The structure of having many speakers and an audience primarily in a listening role hindered the potential for deeper, personal connections. As a speaker on the first day, I was approached for conversations about Nostr, which were enriching, but somewhat sporadic and unstructured. This dynamic, where a few are seen as heroes imparting wisdom to an audience, doesn’t quite resonate with the collaborative and egalitarian ethos of the Nostr community. We avoided the pitfalls of corporate booths and sales pitches, but there’s still potential to enhance our approach.
For future events, I propose reducing the number of talks and panels. An alternative could be pre-recording talks for online viewing, allowing us to utilize in-person time for more meaningful, facilitated networking. Open Spaces and similar models offer guidance on this, involving active facilitators and opportunities for attendees to propose discussion topics and participate in smaller, focused group conversations. This format emphasizes personal connections over mere information sharing, utilizing various room sizes for more inclusive and effective discussions.
This isn't to diminish the achievements of the Nostr.world team or the value of Nostrica and Nostrasia. Both events were extraordinary, offering immense learning opportunities and a platform for networking. Yet, there's always room for improvement, particularly in fostering more inclusive and impactful interactions.
Aspiration Tech’s guide on creating participatory events is a valuable resource in this regard: Aspiration Tech's Participatory Event Guide https://aspirationtech.org/papers/creating_participatory_events
The goal is to enhance the value of our gatherings by deepening the connections within our diverse community.
It’s amazing how our brains work when viewing images. If there’s a conflict of potential meanings then we can feel the image flip back and forth. Then once the brain settles it becomes hard to see the other meaning. https://i.nostr.build/0kBY.jpg
Did anybody else watch the cybertruck launch event? I’m perplexed by a bunch of things. How they could have spent so much money on amazing promo videos in Iceland, which do make the truck look cool, and then somehow fail to get the most basic things working at the actual event. It’s so dark you can’t see what’s going on most of the time. Elon himself stands to give his talk with his head in a shadow, you can only see his torso!
Then there’s Elon’s speech. It’s incoherent. He rambles on, loses his train of thought, fails to complete sentences, throws in a bunch of zingers which don’t land. If he’d presented that way at any startup / pitch competition he’d lose, despite him presenting a rather impressive vehicle.

Why don’t the iOS mobile apps support nprofile? Most of the web apps seem to, which is good. I just checked all the nostr iOS apps, nos included, and none support looking up users via nprofile. Using nprofile for sharing contacts is good because it embeds the relay information and lets us work with a less centralized relay network.

Exploring Nostr as a Replacement for Old School Online Forums
This week, I had an enlightening conversation with the team at Bamboo, a digital agency in Aotearoa New Zealand, about leveraging Nostr for communities. Bamboo supports organizations in establishing and nurturing online communities, primarily using basic web forum software. While this software is straightforward and manageable, hosted on their own servers, it's not quite hitting the mark. Engagement is low; people aren't sharing much, often forgetting to revisit or open emails. They're looking for something more dynamic, akin to Nostr.
The communities Bamboo works with aren't overly concerned about censorship, but they do value a sense of privacy and effective community moderation. Currently, their forums are moderated by a few designated volunteers who can delete content and interact with contributors. Unlike Reddit-style communities, there's no need for post approval queues.
However, there's a definite interest in privacy, though not necessarily requiring robust encryption. It could be as simple as restricting community access to specific relay connections, or encoding posts with a shared key – akin to a house lock, which is secure but not impervious to a determined intruder.
I believe Nostr can meet these needs. We're close, but there are challenges to address, particularly in making it straightforward for users to connect and engage with these community spaces using existing Nostr apps. Ideally, there should be clear instructions for web, iOS, and Android platforms. For instance, if someone installs the Amethyst app, they should be able to join a community easily, perhaps through a simple link.
For web users, the process might involve installing Amethyst, then clicking a link that directly ushers them into the community. This process still seems a bit complex, and simplifying it remains a challenge. A direct web sign-up process, similar to @npub1l2v…ajft's new web login, could be effective. Users could request to join a community or relay through a Nostr link, and relay operators would manage these requests and monitor joiners.
Moderators would need tools to oversee posts and flag inappropriate content within their community. While end-to-end encryption is appealing, it's crucial that it doesn't complicate the joining and participating process. Users should easily understand if they're posting within their specific community and not to the broader Nostr network. Similarly, viewing content should be streamlined to focus on community-specific interactions.
One option is we make it clear what relays host what content, provide info on joining a relay, finding it, adding it, posting to it.
Another option is we modify / extend the communities that satellite.earth and amethyst support.
Another would be…..?
In summary, while Nostr presents a promising alternative to traditional online forums, there's work to be done. We need to refine some underlying technical aspects and, more importantly, develop a user experience and apps that facilitate easy and engaging community interaction.
This feels like a really good way to grow nostr, I hear folks with a clear need.

it would be interesting to have a feature where we offered to “import” or “port” followers from the fediverse over. we ask them for their fediverse user and then auto follow everyone via mostr.
Nice! Can we add a second form to look up a nostr account for the fediverse? Put in an npub or nip-05 and generate the mostr account for the nostr identity?
Cute videos of nature on nostr! @npub1zwu…hjds
I’m a big fan of the use an DHT to map npub to relays. I think we should totally do it. But i’m not quite sure how. Some folks who know more than me say it’s hard… But it seems like it should be doable to me.
Phone’s today do tons of onboarding and there’s a lot of lockin too. There’s a whole set of tools to migrate your data and accounts to the new phone, find contacts, recommend apps to install. We don’t think about it because google and apple do such a good job. But ask Nokia, MSFT, Mozilla, Amazon, Samsung, and all the others that spent billions trying to make alternatives to iOS and Android…. that onboarding / experience / engagement is very important.
you should find someone else to write about the project because i just spent a couple minutes reading that link and i have no idea of what it is except maybe open source tech somewhat related to crypto and you’re very excited about it.

some relays do sync between them. there is a gossip model where you can find what relay a specific user has published to and then read from there.
Right now most clients don’t use relays that host and share just contact and profile information. We were using purplepag.es by @npub1l2v…ajft until we added that functionality in to our own relay.nos.social. I think using those is a stop gap, but we need a better solution to finding people and contacts.
@npub1tqj…z588 is cool, when I installed it on my Mac it wouldn’t let me resize the window, it didn’t seem to pay attention to my mute lists, and I found some small bugs. But it’s early days. So I’m excited to see what you come up with. The Alby NWC worked.
The UX is lacking and nobody knows about it, but in @npub1pu3…tfch you can search for any @
[email protected] and it will let you find and follow that person via the mostr.pub bridge. If you work out the nip-05 you can do it in any nostr client.
Here’s how we do it: https://github.com/planetary-social/nos/blob/a1d75348703851e4f5a51ca3ac21c26ef61882e3/Nos/Service/RelayService.swift#L734
The nip-05 for most fediverse users on nostr is: mostr.pub/.well-known/
[email protected]I’m so sorry to hear about your brother passing.
And the search came from a company, Summize, which had a real time social search engine which they launched using twitter data. It really made twitter work. Buying summize was one of the critical early decisions at twitter which has been forgotten but was so important.
https://techcrunch.com/2008/07/15/confirmed-twitter-acquires-summize-search-engine/?guccounter=1
Yeah, I hope I didn’t imply that you weren’t aware of what needed to get done. More we need to build a team around the nostr.com and work on it’s content for normies. :-D
Primal runs its own caching and search relays to make the experience better. It’s written in Julia! That’s not a language I’ve come across since I was hanging out at MIT. We need multiple compatible services like what primal is doing.
Damn, another nostr app to try out. ;-D
https://freerse.com/
Following along @npub1tqj…z588
I probably talk about the bitcoiner content too much, the problem is not at all that we’ve got tons of bitcoiners or that they’re talking about bitcoin too much. More it’s that it’s hard to discover the other people and conversations.
The UX experience is where we need to do work. It’s not so much fun, but it’s what will make the difference.
So when it comes to contact discovery, I’ve always wanted to do something Private Set Intersection. Anybody interested in working on getting PSI for privacy preserving contact discovery that we could use with Nostr?
There’s code which does the first 90% of the work: https://github.com/OpenMined/PSI
Regarding search, my initial thought is throw elastic search at the problem. But then I’m wondering what LLM’s could do to make search better. I think we’d want to have multiple search providers with a common api, the way that Damus and others support plugging in to translation engines. I think the needs of search and indexing are different than a normal relay, and we probably need those broken out in to a separate service or an add-on which only some relays provide.
Primal has a caching server that calculates things like how many followers a person has and they use that to sort the search results. In nos.social we don’t, yet, have that, so we sort by mutual followers. Both do a great job at finding the right @npub180c…h6w6 but overall popularity isn’t as good when you’re looking for your friend Matt. For new users who don’t have anybody then the overall popularity is better than mutual follows.
Coracle calculates and displays a kind of Web of Trust (WoT) score for each person which is nice.
All of which would be improved if we had a good way to say, this is the Matt who you’re following on twitter/mastodon/instagram or have the email / phone number of.
Get paid to build Nostr!

Hitler's trial was broadcast over radio and that's how he came to be widely known in Germany in the 1920's.... So sometimes broadcasting the trial doesn't go well. In the case of Trump today, he's got a massive platform already, so perhaps broadcasting the trials would help, honestly i doubt it.
@npub1h88…pz20 I can't find that tiktok nostr video you made... I looked for it on your youtube and tiktok... i saw it originaly here on nostr.build
His videos are good, catchy, viral, and help promote nostr. But he's also reaching the bitcoiner crowd who likely have already heard of Nostr. We need creators who have communities and audiences which aren't the same as the folks we already have on Nostr.
There was a time when nostr.com was exactly what it should be. I quite like it in terms of being a site for developers to find out more. We need to keep updating it, but it's good for that. But once we went from needing just developers, to now wanting to attract early adopters, now we need to move nostr.com's current site to developer.nostr.com and create something for users which focuses not on the tech at all, but why they should join and how.
Today, I had a conversation with a friend's acquaintance who expressed a desire to "do something about social media, to create something that is ours." She was unfamiliar with Nostr and only vaguely aware of Mastodon, though she had heard of Bluesky and Threads.
She represents the ideal target audience for Nostr. Once I explained our project, her excitement was palpable. Although initially skeptical about Bitcoin, she showed interest in an economic model not reliant on advertising and was open to exploring alternative models.
Several key points emerged from our discussion. Firstly, the ease of joining and locating acquaintances on Nostr is crucial. For instance, the process of installing TestFlight, then navigating back to nos.social to click a link and install Nostr via TestFlight, proved challenging. Her attempt to Google Nostr nearly led her astray. @npub1a8j…5pj4 i think, this underscores the need for someone with tech marketing/communications expertise to overhaul nostr.com. The current site should be repositioned as developer.nostr.com.
We must simplify the process of finding and connecting with known contacts on Nostr. It's essential to communicate the value proposition of Nostr to new users, whether they learn about it through friends or media. Our focus shouldn't be on creating more content for Bitcoin enthusiasts, as there's already a plethora of information available for those familiar with wallet operations.
Another aspect that stood out was Nostr's multi-app nature. Nostr isn't just Damus, Nos, Amethyst, or Habla.news. It's a platform where various apps can operate using the same data, contacts, and services, all under the user's control. For those with a developer mindset, the sheer breadth of projects within Nostr demonstrates the vibrancy and scale of our endeavor. Projecting this magnitude is crucial for attracting users who are deciding where to invest their time.
I believe we could benefit from explainer videos that highlight why Nostr is both important and interesting. During our conversation, I showcased various apps: Primal for a web social feed, Habla and Yakihonne for longer-form blogging, Flockstr for events, Wherostr for geolocation, and Highlighter for layering different functionalities. These examples illustrate the diversity and versatility of our platform.
I didn't delve into Nostr nests, marketplaces, Wavlake, Streamstr, and more, but it's clear there's much to explore.
This conversation has led me to believe that we should proactively share the Nostr story, positioning it as the future of social networking. This approach will also help us differentiate from platforms like Threads, Pixelfed, Mastodon, and Bluesky. While these platforms are based on open protocols, they operate as single-app, vertical silos.
Our unique offering is the unified 'login' across diverse apps, granting users not just control over their algorithms but their entire app experience. They can even use multiple apps simultaneously.
The impact of a single Thai TikTok video in attracting a Thai user community to Nostr exemplifies the power of targeted storytelling. We should harness similar strategies to broaden our reach and influence. Talking about how this is a whole new way of social, not just one app.
bluesky has a nice community written guide for new users. It’s the kind of thing i’d like for nostr and to be promoted on nostr.com instead of our very developer focused page.

scuttlebutt doesn’t have a single contact list. Instead each follow / unfollow / block are individual contact messages. it has advantages and disadvantages over the nostr system.
I was able to fix it with https://metadata.nostr.com/ and also found out that I was running an orphaned version of YakiHonne… The new TestFlight is: https://testflight.apple.com/join/tcXozZIu
It’s a great app and really highlights good aspects of Nostr! Now can we get some $ from OpenSats or elsewhere to talk/bribe @npub147w…selt in to open sourcing it. ;-D
Yeah, we need a better way of handling them. Because I would also like to be able to tell a relay, give me all events from pub’s in this list. But the way we do lists right now isn’t scalable.
Oh, nice, I like the update. You’ve got lots of really. Nice features in Yakhonne and I’m excited about the project.
to be clear i’m really liking the ios yakihonne app. just frustrated that i lost my contact list.
One of the downsides of closed source apps is you can’t see what it’s doing or file a ticket to fix bugs. This just came up with me with @npub1yzv…rf8q which has a bug where it overrides your contact list if you follow someone in the yakihonne app. Hopefully it’ll get fixed fast.
In general we have a nostr problem with replacable list events and how easy it is for apps to override and whip out lists.

I didn’t pay much attention to Bitcoin beyond having cash app set to do daily small purchases for dollar cost averaging before Nostr. I knew Lightning was some way to make Bitcoin faster / better, but that was it. I now find it kind of useful for more than just a hedged stored value.
Apt is the original big AppStore. It’s all free and open source but it functions with updates, builds, support, quality controls, security, etc…
I’m sorry that’s happening to you but I’m not surprised. Case in point, this very reply. https://image.nostr.build/6c3baff6dded57202fcb1f7b193a486d8b758e47a506e0ab40eb9b0fb236b44a.jpg
I think we need to improve the previews from njump on links…

One thing which shocked me about Xiamen, China was how quiet it was. All motorcycles and scooters are electric, and many, maybe most, of the cars are too. Crowded intersections and roads were as quiet as an empty park. It was a bit dangerous because no vehicles made sounds, I wasn’t used to only using visual clues to avoid getting hit.
Part of what makes this account great, is that it only posts every couple of months, always as replies… Just popping up to say ‘fuck cars’ ;-D
When I lived in the US I avoided the doctor for just about anything because it had the potential of being very expensive. Now I live in the socialist island of Aotearoa where healthcare is a fundamental right, paid for by my taxes. Now I have to admit that I just don’t like doctors and the medical system. Even when they’re exceedingly nice, and kiwis really are saccharine nice, I have to admit that I just don’t like going to the doctor.
It was scrapes only and I didn’t hit my head, aloe verde will do the trick.
I think my new favorite nostr account is @npub1cyu…h2er! Could be I’m still smarting from being hit by a car yesterday and my hand hurts… but still… @npub1cyu…h2er is weird and makes me smile.
You do know he hasn’t run microsoft since 2006 right? He’s not even on the board.
Complaining to Gates about MSFT is like getting upset with Jack because of something Elon does with Twitter.
It is possible to accept btc and other crypto over Open Collective but you need to talk to them to turn it on. We’re working with them to try and get that better and to allow for lightning too.
And unfortunately the only post so far.
Debian has an AppStore and it's not a problem. They manage quality and security just fine. It's the locked monopoly choke point AppStore that's bad.
So what the hell was the point of the OpenAI firing and re-hiring Sam Altman? Nobody seems to know or those who do aren’t saying.
I got hit by a car, knocked over, but the cuts are minor and I was able to fix my bike. And as a reward I get this sunset view. https://image.nostr.build/c4393e7509fcaa1c635df151af812ad8588a9513f15210cb43bb6767e6408083.jpg
I think you get this with an embedded relay, using a single caching relay, some updated queries for relays, and lots of optimization.
Talk to @npub1uuc…atty who’s working on iterating on tweeter. We definitely want feedback to improve it.

Sounds like a bug. We’re working on rewriting how we poll relays for content to try and make it better right now. Mind describing the behavior you’re seeing vs what you expect?
There is actually good representation of some of the ‘other’ groups in Parliament. There are representatives from Africa, Latin America, and the US. https://www.parliament.nz/en/pb/library-research-papers/research-papers/the-2020-general-election-and-referendums-results-analysis-and-demographics-of-the-53rd-parliament/
No, there are some people who’s identity cleanly fits within the provided categories. They are after all by far the most common ways people identify ethnically in Aotearoa New Zealand.
I’m always a bit confused when I get asked what to put on these New Zealand demographic questions. Sometimes they also add “European” and “African, Latin American, or Middle Eastern” which seems like a category so broad they might as well just admit it’s ‘other’.

That’s how the nos feed works. It’s who you’re following. The discover screen is either friends of friends or content on a specific relay.
I was looking at this last week. I was hoping to get them to support nostr. I think the post to multiple services should probably be web / cloud not native app but that depends on the use case.
He’s wrong more often than right.

Anyone know if there is a podcast version of the nostrasia talks? I was thinking I’d like to catch up on them during my bike rides.
I wonder what an app which let you share from centralized social media to nostr would look like. I share lots of stuff on instagram and tiktok with friends, and they do let you share OFF of those apps and on to other platforms. If we added to Nostr apps support for the share sheets so you could share from them to nostr, it might be interesting. Especially if we add better support for curation and lists, add x post from instagram to y list on nostr. Then let me subscribe to that list.
Nitter is a kind of automated way of getting content off of X, but what if wanted a way to do like tweeter, but take my personal posts, stories, and reels from IG and post them to my account on nostr, either primary or secondary.
I love the evangelical energy but i think we need less selling and more listening, conversation, and welcoming. People don’t join a church or social movement because of its structure or details about the belief system.
For example it is unlikely for someone to choose to be a Unitarian vs attending United Church of Christ. The two churches are very similar, they come from the Christian tradition with service on Sunday and broadly lefty political views. You decide you want a community and that one or the other feels welcoming. Nobody decides just because UCC is Christian vs Unitarians dropping that label. You choose based on the people and for social reasons.
The same is true in digital spaces. We need to learn how to make nostr meet people’s needs. We need to do that by talking to potential users and learning about their needs and desires. Then we need to communicate that to our community of developers and designers.
What we’re doing is called co-design. It’s messy but that’s ok because it is human and humanity is messy and complicated. I co-taught a studio class on co-design at the MIT Media Lab a few years ago, so clearly I managed to convince somebody I know what I’m talking about.
Hey did we meet at dweb or the aspiration tech non-profit developer summit? I think so but i’m terrible with names and faces.
Eitherway, welcome to the #nostrverse.
I’m going to wait until it’s not covered in snow and ice. This rock is in Norway afterall.
Wellington is full of terrible systems for bike locks. The one I hate the most is this locky docky which requires you use your phone and install and app to lock your bike.
https://www.lockydock.co.nz
It is not very reliable, which makes the nightmare worse.
Standing on that rock has been on my bucket list for over a decade.
Yep. @npub1l2v…ajft has been working on that. We’ll get there if we make it a priority.
We need to get @npub1x2e…3dt6 to post more. He’s got such epic rides.
I’m about to go ride the bays in Wellington. What should we be posting?
I found this horrible bike stand I could barely figure out how to use to lock my bike the other day.

What would that be? Like a service that pushed the about / relay list events to many relays to make them more accessible?
Not hard or a terrible idea i guess.
WorldCoin is so creepy that I couldn’t parody it.
Sounds expensive but given it’s norway and a long trip from New Zealand…. I might pay one btc in order to stand there for 5 minutes.
Oh
You mean be paid?!
Yeah. But that’s not how the world works. We pay for travel and amazing experiences. We don’t get paid to have them.
Interesting indepth exploration of the #letteramerica trend and controversy over on TikTok by @npub1u6p…7r2g
#note1z2s…pa03
Works for me. I’ve got way more of the former than the latter. 😎
Exactly. They need audience building support.
Installing the native apps and making an npub/nsec is easy. Seeing content is also easy. Unfortunately it’s hard to get from the global feed which is mostly Bitcoiners posts to other kinds of users / content is hard. Some apps like @npub1yzv…rf8q do make interesting attempts at directing users to different content. Learning how to use a browser extension to access nostr web apps is hard. So is understanding that you’ve got keys and not an account on a server.
To me the biggest issue is new users join and we’re not making sure their first “hello world” type posts are getting interaction. Folks join and feel ignored and leave.
I’m not a bitcoiner but i think making it easy folks to fundraise using zaps is a kind of killer…. Err uh…. Key feature which will draw some people in.
That said they need to be able to join, build an audience while also making it easy for their existing users to follow them over.
Some nostr relays and clients support using Tor. If we could get it so that was an option in more apps, a default on relays, and a fall back if clients fail to connect over the normal network then we’d really have something.
Most social media patforms have teams which help high profile users migrate. Substack, TikTok, twitch, spotify, and others even promised minimum revenue to incentivize the switch. We don’t have the VC dollars to burn on that but we should think of what we can do. A kind of white glove onboarding service.
I’m not a fan of him personally, probably for different reasons than you, but he’s got an audience and he’s being hurt by the platforms.
Yep. We’ve switched to it. We need to add some better docs on what is nostr and how to start using it on njump. Maybe some ux testing for users who get an njump link but know nothing about nostr.
We have tweeter.nos.social if they want to move but keep back posting to Twitter. I think we’re close to having the pieces we need. Perhaps some ux but also explainer videos, tutorials, etc. Not for Bitcoiners but for Arabic speakers and others going in to how to use nostr as an alternative. Especially how to find people and build an audience.
Come to Aotearoa New Zealand next time. Sure it’s far from everywhere but it’s nice once you get here.
How can we use Nostr to solve this?
Governments are putting strong pressure on social media companies to change what’s said about Israel’s invasion of Gaza.
Nostr is about censorship resistance and autonomy. Let’s get these folks onboard as they get removed, shaddow banned, or demonitized on centralized corporate platforms.

Yeah I’ve worked with standards bodies and there are problems. In particular there is the way language around inclusivity and support are used to create overly complicated standards that are subject to capture by institutional players. I worked on OAuth and saw how the original vision, elegant security, and simplicity of OAuth 1.0 was lost so we could neet the needs of google.
IETF does a better job than W3C but they’re all operating under a paradigm of big companies making very static systems.
Rough consensus and running code is bettet than a consortium where you need to pay $50k a year and have full time staffers in order to participate in the open standards process.
I lose track of all the nostr apps myself. And listing functionality is by far the easiest way of comparing. We just need to make sure we don’t make that the only or primary way of understanding the ecosystem.
That sounds like a ton of fun. I’m sorry i won’t be able to make it.
What makes it feel dead to you?
Looks like a couple of days ago @npub180c…h6w6 reorganized the GitHub org and team for nostr-protocol. Is this what you’re talking about? I see 19 people in the team as having commit access.
I spent years in and around the Ruby on Rails community. They eventually developed rails-core which had a process for joining and leaving. While a protocol is different from a framework, this feels broadly similar. Rails wasn’t perfectly managed but it has worked for almost 20 years and handled a bunch of conflicts while staying open. Nostr feels broadly similar.
I like this and think it should be maintained. But i also think check the box listing of which app supports the most features isn’t a good way of choosing which app to use.
Take the calendar / events apps. They’re good at what they do, they arent trying to be a superapp. We don’t want something like a single wechat or ms word. But if we rank apps based on which has the most features then we prioritize features or the number of nips they support.
Instead we need ways to explore and choose nostr apps based on what people like to use. Like make a way for users to share their list of nostr apps they like, then we could compare it to your contacts on Nostr, using that we can make recommendations. Make it social.
What’s the one company behind Nostr?
My critique of Nostr is that it suffers from a bit of the tyranny of structurelessness.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tyranny_of_Structurelessness
I strongly prefer the system we’ve got with nostr than a system by which the code is open source but the control over the protocol is tightly controlled by a single vc backed company.
They just moved off of a single PDS to multiple which the company controls. A step towards decentralization.
A couple things. If you’re pulling away engineers, product people, etc from FANG companies who’ve been at the scale signal needs to grow then 30k a month for fully encumbered cost it’s that unbelievable. Remember a lot of the cost of an employee doesn’t end up in that employees bank account. Remember you qualify for public housing in San Francisco if you make less than $150k a year, essentially that’s the real poverty / living wage line.
Also American non-profits are MUCH more restricted than benefit corps. Essentially they aren’t legally allowed to do the things which a normal business would do to be profitable.
Running large tech platforms is very expensive. Scaling is expensive. And Moxie told me one of the hardest parts of building and growing signal was the way non-profit rules limited their options, essentially crippling them.
That’s deciding a lot based on his face. What’s phrenology but for faces?
How do you do your notifications?
It’s amazing how the experience on social media is so driven by what timezone you’re in.
I think we should not exclude projects from nostr sites and lists just because they’re closed source. List them all. Just tell people what’s open source vs not.
Is it even on nostr is awesome and the nostr app lists?
What is an iCloud only app? As far as i know the only iCloud apps are made by apple. I installed freeform from the AppStore on my iPhone. So it sure as hell seems to me to be an iOS nostr app.
Here’s a pic of your reply being displayed on a iphone running freeform.

The freeform.space iOS nostr app is pretty good. Why did I not know it existed until just now?
The double @ is what mastodon uses. Personally I think emails are losing their dominance and we should just use it as user @ server.
That’s not something I’ve ever heard anyone say about me. ✋🏼

Yes, she was considering options and debating the value of going public. There’s a tremendous cost to a women’s career and personal safety if they go public. I’m going to respect her privacy but I do wonder if the board learned of this, asked Sam, and he lied.
I kept thinking the Sam Altman fired from OpenAI was the LLMs hallucinating. Checked twitter. Didn’t believe it. Then confirmed at google news.
I heard rumors of sexual harassment and assault by senior people at OpenAI. No way to confirm if they’re legit but it seemed credible to me, and that Sam was covering it up. I wonder if that’s what he lied to the board about.
There was a whole crew that did a Kyoto to Tokyo bike ride leading up to Nostrasia. Riders included @npub1gg5…ke5x, @npub1z6j…p8xs, and others.
I have two MetroNorth tickets to Poughkeepsie I need to use in the next few weeks, so gonna do a ride up around New Paltz and Kingston. There will be a lot of gravel, so hoping that goes well.
I thought about listing it as a @npub1feasvyttsd3kmqek54n9w5e6lhfp3a7jhzkak4zkxzklngftuy0s9wahxp ride, but I’m not quite up for that level of organizational work. I did list it as an OutCycling 🏳️🌈 ride knowing far fewer people would sign up. Looks like one of my old ride buddies will be joining me - which is great.
Months later… still no bike stuff on Nostr… :(
This time? Because they were perfectly happy to work with Hitler.

You could run your own push notification service or generate them locally within the app or have empty silent notifications which trigger the app looking for new content on relays. But the notifications have to have a key for the ‘service’ and the client app.
I think most nostr apps that do notifications do the cloud bot method. The code for the various solutions are on github.
I mean, it’s optional text that can be included in an event. I agree we shouldn’t put a nip in which says it’s required. I think this should be a clients MAY add “client”: “app name” to events. There’s no nip for it right now, which might be why some clients dropped it. But that’s easy enough to fix.
Ok, we’ll add it to nos.social, and find a way to display it. Hopefully others do too.
Is that really a problem? Somebody wants to use their own custom client pretending to be using Damus? If you want to have android but want to pretend you’ve got an iPhone, more power to you. This is about casual discovery of nostr apps.
What should be configurable is really up to the app developer. Some apps are all about configuration, others pick settings and design for them.
I guess I’ve got a task to do then, start adding client: Nos to our posts and asking @npub1uaa…87z6 to come up with a design for where to display it. ;-D
Bluesky’s PDS server has gotten a lot easier to install…
https://github.com/bluesky-social/pds
It runs on a testnet and not the. Main ‘bluesky’ service which is closed and invite only.
A bluesky PDS is like a relay server. They’ve also got a concept of a GDS which is an indexing server which provides other services, similar to the primal caching relay.
Back in the early days of twitter clients could say their name in posts. It was a really good way to discover new twitter apps. It was dropped in 2012 as part of twitter abandoning the open app ecosystem.
I’d like to have that feature in Nostr. For example, today I’ve posted from nos.social, damus, coracle, listr, and primal.
To make it short, maybe we don’t do a user-agent like string, but instead add a field or tag to events with the app name. Then apps can store a name to link url depending on how they want to use it and make it visible and clickable or not.
https://martech.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/via-Twitter.png
Cool, yeah I don’t know much about your work. Solid’s an interesting project, but kind of reminds me of the semantic web. If you build it without talking to users then they’ll love it when it’s ready. Kind of like instead of a chicken and egg problem, you just started with “Imagine there was a healthy ecosystem of chickens” without thinking about how they might come in to being.
Good ideas but things need to be evolved bottom up in order to become useful complex systems.
I think you’d need a money transmitter license for each jurisdiction you’ve got users in order to do that. And a way to get the fiat out of the app and back in to people’s bank accounts.
There’s something super powerful if we can make it bridged and work. The fediverse has a broader set of communities and a strong social graph, especially if / when threads joins. Nostr lets you take advantage of that network to run many more interesting apps than just social sharing of a feed, a la twitter.
I have… one of my todo items is to install ditto at rabble.nz. Right now I’ve got it running micro.pub but I couldn’t get the bridgy fed thing to work to connect it to nostr.
Thanks to @npub108p…yev6 and mostr.pub most of the fediverse is on nostr. ;-D
@npub13v9…w5eu has a good guide to using and building the new GPT plugin and how to understand what OpenAi has just launched / announced.
https://simonwillison.net/2023/Nov/15/gpts/
@npub16c0…6nvr Is there primal api? I know primal does custom requests to your relay, i was wondering if there was a way to look up the number of followers count you display.
So tell me, how’d you find us in this corner of the internet? What drew you and what are you looking for?
As long as you don’t mind giving apple it’s 15% / 30% cut then you can just buy sats with applepay from within the app. For folks buying a lot, ore regularly, it’s not a good idea, but for folks who want to have some sats to play with it’s good.
Here’s a list I pulled from nos.social’s initial recommendations: https://listr.lol/npub1wmr34t36fy03m8hvgl96zl3znndyzyaqhwmwdtshwmtkg03fetaqhjg240/30000/naddr1qq4xc6tnw3ez6dfnvvexydryxvknzdpnxqkngvfcvgkkydrxvcknqefk8q6nqdnzx9jnweqpp4mhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mqzypmvwx4w8fy378v7a3ruhgt7y2wd5sgn5zamde4wzamdwep798905qcyqqq82vqa9r6ra
So there’s a bug that keeps you from adding more than one in the initial create, and also the ‘add to list’ is coming soon, which is confusing.
@npub1zuu…c2uc Did list lose the ability to update lists? It now lets me add one and only one item when creating a list and I can’t update lists.
https://image.nostr.build/d26128b37be519f0634bb57ef915061e0fecd509ecb008d9f7d3902922b03a4d.png
Jacinda hasn’t been PM for a year, but good on you for keeping up to date with things. And the new center right government wants to open up immigration even more than Labour.
Did Nostr just get another 60k users in a bump or was there a change in the way primal counts active users? Growth up until nostrasia was very slow, so i'm surprised to see the jump. Happy, but surprised.
https://m.primal.net/HQOX.png
https://primal.net/explore
New Zealand's population growth is primarily driven by immigration, there's a lot of it. Every year, 3.8% of the population are new immigrants who arrived that year. And it's going up quickly. There doesn't seem to be much of a backlash against immigration here, there's a feeling that the only way to meet the labour needs of the country is to open the doors to immigration. Unlike some countries where people who immigrants don't have rights or a path to citizenship, New Zealand grants voting rights to residents and most work visas lead to permanent residency. In fact, most people who were trapped here due to covid border closings were offered permanent residency simply because they'd gone through the pandemic in New Zealand and developed ties to the country. I also think the idea was it would keep those potential workers here at a time when borders were closed.
https://www.interest.co.nz/public-policy/125242/migration-driven-population-growth-has-more-doubled-compared-pre-covid-levels
There’s no profitable business model for relays yet.
I think I need the ability to post to subfeeds / streams / multiple accounts just so I can post coffee pics without worrying about spamming people with flat white tofu.

Looks like you can control it in amethyst!
Displaying a “global” feed is actually a client showing all posts from a set of relays. I never really like the concept of a global feed because it isn’t socially scoped.
Anyway it’s clients and not relays that decide what to display.
@npub1cd6…w96r Somewhere between 150k and 600k. Probably towards the higher end of that range.
looks like the license is MIT: https://github.com/zmeyer44/flockstr/blob/main/LICENSE
What’s the state of nostr events / calendar apps?
There is:
* InMyTown.social - Open Source - Rough Design - In Development
* Flockstr - Polished Design - Close Source?
* Nostrtime - Part of Coracle?
* Nosdav.com/calendar - rough simple calendar display

It’s 9pm here in Aotearoa New Zealand and I’m on my last call of the day, the 8th call… starting at 8am. The post nostrasia rush is on.
Yeah damus and nos don’t use the libraries for their nostr stuff. A new library could be extracted.
The NDK libraries are actually pretty good for rust and js. We need tools for the services around content warnings / content discovery / pluggable algorithms. Right now the way user and content search works on relays isn’t good. And we’ve got a kind of broken system for looking up what relays have an npub’s content. Purplepag.es is a stop gap, but most clients don’t use it and pablo doesn’t have incentives to maintain it as a critical service.
https://github.com/nostr-dev-kit/ndk
A little over a week ago I had an hour long conversation with two women in a coffee shop. The conversation centered on Gravel NY - a cycling group I started a few years ago. I was only expecting to meet with one person but she brought another woman with her to the meet up. Afterwards I started thinking the second woman seemed really familiar. I mentioned as much to my husband when I got home. Then I started digging and realized it probably was who i thought it was.
Without giving away too many details - I think she’s a fairly well known celebrity. She introduced herself by teling me her nickname and mentioned her legal first name (to explain her nickname). Since I didn’t realize I was talking to a celebrity until afterwards, her celebrity status simply wasn’t an issue and we had this great, really connected conversation.
Afterwards the first woman mentioned that the celebrity(?) really appreciated our conversation. I’m guessing it was because for an hour she just got to be a regular person.
I’d love it if I saw her again sometime - we bonded over her love of gravel cycling. Would be incredible if she brought her bike to NYC and rode with the group. But the chances of that happening are pretty slim. Still, I can hope, right?
#CelebritySighting
#Insurance companies are refusing to pay on old #SexualAbuse claims brought under a #NY law that allows a lot more time for the claims to be filed against groups like the #CatholicChurch and #BoyScouts.
To me the solution is for the organization to pay - then let them sue their insurance companies. I mean if the Catholic Church sold St Patrick’s Cathedral to a developer - that should be enough to pay quite a few of the claims, right?

I don’t think we’ll win with more features like polls. We need better UX around using the apps, joining, explaining nostr to people who are neither bitcoiners (or other crypro folks who get wallets / keys) nor developers.
We can do this.
We need to make the new user and discovery in nostr. While we all win when open protocols win, but we need the users if we want the diverse open app ecosystem we want then we need nostr to build its user base.
https://image.nostr.build/0ba8048a214abdbb421f25ed1c8492c93f83143bccf724fd24d2925df04da31b.jpg
On my way back to Aotearoa New Zealand I stopped off for a couple of days in Melbourne. The hotel had loaner bikes and I spent an afternoon exploring. What wonderful infrastructure.
I’m reminded of this when I saw this clickbait piece on bad cycle lanes… oh my… they’re so bad it’s fun to see the pictures.
In Wellington right now there’s a whole political faction on city council whose only agenda is opposing cycling infrastructure. Thankfully they’re not a majority, but it is odd because almost all transportation infrastructure funding goes to roads, but somehow any support to bikes are the problem. What is it about bikes that cause so much anger?

I’ve been using copilot for xcode to get up to speed on swift. It’s not about learning code concepts but it helps a ton translating pseudo code in to swift. I found the LLM’s get confused by big changes, but smaller things, like refactoring a method, it’s great.

Yo guys I feel dumb. I was using an iPhone 12 recently until I bought a new iPhone SE third GEN. I did this because I was convinced that my iPhone 12 wasn’t eligible for trading with AT&T. But then after I get my new phone, my partner says that it is eligible for trading and that she is going to trade it in for an iPhone 15 allowing me to use her iPhone 14 she currently has. And now I’m stuck with this phone that I need to figure out a return for. Because damn the iPhone 14 battery is just way better as well as the camera.
Nah nah nah. I came from that kind of evangelical background growing up. I can testify it’s operating in a different reality
Mike Johnson is the goofiest man alive. And I love how he tries to scrub the internet of the wild things he says. I thought it was “Gods truth.”

What kind if peoject needs that big a diesel engine?
Me too. Amazing food. I found so many wonderful vegan restaurants.
We want to support it. Been meaning to post a bounty. Both zap and NWC support in @npub1pu3…tfch. PRs welcome.
We’re totally up for it. Will pay a dev who wants to add zap and NWC support to nos.
Maybe I’m just being reactionary right now.

See I think this shit is an example of people not calling it out because they want to not be considered islamaphobic. If a Christian group prohibited hugging and handshakes between genders I think most people would think that they’re in some sort of fringe Christian cult. Am I just major American brained right now?

I’m not sure but I’m assuming fentanyl.
A friend of a friend of my partner just ODed. Second time this has happened to someone connected to me this year.

This seems to be a pretty big shift for a country typically considered western aligned!
Common carrier status for Internet service makes sense to me.
Getting people connected makes sense to me as well.
What doesn’t make sense IMHO is the emphasis on wired/cabled connections.
No one forced them to get vaccinated. They chose fear over their career. They chose fear over their own health. Their job was to protect others. They chose fear over that essential part of their job.
https://apple.news/AHkT_FiI0SJCtPHyPsT-xqw
(Footnote: vaccine mandates for essential workers like police & fire fighters were important early on. Now that most everyone is vaccinated and there’s clearly herd immunity it’s right that they’ve been lifted. They were a tool in a critical moment. The moment has passed.)
Anyone else watch the recent Hassan/Ethan drama?
The image isn’t loading but now I curious from the caption 😂
I miss my childhood piano…that mfer was a beast. It’s unlike any other piano I’ve ever played. You could play any notes with confidence and they would sound amazing just due to the fact of the craftsmanship and tuning of the instrument.
The vending machines in China let you pay with facial recognition. :-(
I haven’t. I’ll take a look. The hardest part about these protocols is not the tech it’s cultivating a community of users and ux. Mostly the tech is remixing a few concepts in different ways.
They each tweak what kind if requests they make to relays differently so that probably explains it. I also notice differences between apps.
This poses some crucial questions no one should ignore.
https://image.nostr.build/4a3cd152d85397637c1cc885d2966808900674e07909b6db6e1af19eed960446.jpg
It is actually a protocol, just a complicated legacy permissioned one.
It could be added but right now read state is stored or not in a per app basis. Some push events for that to relays to keep track between sessions. Others store it locally. Some don’t track it at all.
Just take a look at the Kentucky governor race win by a dem in an otherwise red state. Or look at Mississippi and how close the dem got in that race, in a deeply red state nonetheless. We need to be more aggressive in red states across the board and providing an actual progressive alternative to the hellish proposals they have to live with. Every state deserves a progressive option. Just my 2 cents take it as you will.
I’ve always wanted to visit. It seems really cool.
Those phone banking efforts are really next level when it comes to this situation

Alright I’ll take your word for it 💕
Maybe I was aggro because I just got off a long argument with two openly nazis just recently. Responding to a post about elites being pedophiles with quote from the Talmud usually signifies that someone is quite far down the pipeline. 🤷♂️ but perhaps I assumed wrong
Yeah but you can be a neo-nazi ideologically lol. That is a thing.
What kind of question is that
I used to live on burnside in Portland. It has a very similar vibe to the burnside cafe in Fitzroy, Melbourne.

We need to scream about project 2025 from the rooftops. No one can stay home this upcoming election. The stakes are too high to give up the country we have (deeply flawed it may be) to religious extremists. Fight the good fight lads✊🏳️🌈🇺🇸🏴☠️

Hear me out. I think that if humans got wiped out there’s a non zero chance that kangaroos take our place as the dominant mammal predator. #prediction
I completely agree with this. We need to uplift the dignity of human life across the board.
You may be free to post nazi shit but I called a spade a spade. He was to cowardly to own up to his own ideology.
Looks like Automatic is giving up on making Tumblr a sucess. They’re reassigning team nembers and going to keep the site going with a minimal staff. According to @npub1qru…afxp, this internal memo outlines the changes.
I’m saddened as i hoped tumblr would be revived and I see antidotal evidence of it getting new traction. My teenage kids love it, for example.

A bill has been introduced in #Ohio which will criminalize #porn and make it a misdemeanor to use a #VPN (!)

While the GOP was able to get some Democrats on board for some of the (unconstitutional) anti-porn bills recently - I would hope Democrats can see how egregious this bill is and it will go nowhere. 🤞

Read Reuters. Its roots are “just the facts” business news.
My favorite conservative news source is Deseret News - Mormon, out of Utah. I really respect them actually.
More top-down, but it enabled bottom-up.
lol. That would be a very first world version of an apocalypse. Gaza is far closer to a real apocalypse.
Just curious- what’s falls in the category “pedophile” in your opinion? I find it’s often used rather loosely. Personally I use it literally when I use it. Don’t even use it for #hebephilia and #ephebophilia.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronophilia
Anyone who is not a nazi should be able to tell that you are in fact a nazi.
Is it one groups interest (dog whistle the jews). Tell me how you arent a nazi again and how its a word without meaning? Just one more time
You’re a Nazi. I used to be a Nazi too so I should know.
Can you define what’s included under the term “pedophile” and point to an example of pedophiles agitating for freedom?
I’ve got my ear to the ground on this stuff and have never seen what you’re talking about - unless we have different definitions of the term. (The word is used rather broadly these days).
How can I ban all messages from mostr.pub someone help #asknostr #nostr
This guy is an actual terrorist and it’s disturbing to see support.
Mullvad is the best VPN service in my humble opinion
Typical example of deflection from the thing I actually said. Sorry if my tone is on the professional side, that’s how I talk.
What issues are you having? What type of labeling are you trying to implement?
And the Bible endorses slavery. What’s your point. All religious texts from thousands of years ago have vile shit. But this is obviously a text that’s historically used to justify anti semitism. And to post such things in a time where anti semetic violence is on a global uptick, is irresponsible and dangerous. Especially when you imply that the “elites” are following the Talmud, ie that their Jews, which is the definition of Nazi shit.
Thing is, I’ve never heard the term islamaphobia when describing the attacks on Gaza. Perhaps some people do, but I think that’s a bit silly. I have only heard of it when describing secondary violence globally on Muslims. Are there issues with religious extremism in places like Europe getting a pass historically due to fears of being called islamaphobic? There have been examples, I’m sure. But broadly, I think words like anti semitism and islamaphobia are getting weaponized in many different contexts, even if they are both valid and tangible issues.
Why am I suddenly seeing so many nazis. I thought this was just a mostr.pub thing but perhaps it’s more widespread.
Nazi posting this early in the morning?
Thankfully I’m not a Catholic 🤭

I havnt watched this completely yet but this creator is someone I deeply respect for his integrity to create nuanced content. Perhaps it’s valuable for context so I thought I would share.
We didn’t have islamaphobia in America after 9/11? I’m pretty sure that was a wide spread phenomenon. Don’t get me wrong, I’m extremely critical of the religion of Islam, particularly its fundamentalism. But at the same time we have a bunch of racists who will jump at the chance to do hate crimes against foreign brown people who come from a completely different cultural context. I think that xenophobia against people from the Eurasia gets lumped in with islamaphobia most of the time unfortunately.
Sounds like this has potentially racist undertones 👀
Such a tragic loss of life 😞
Left memes have excessive text and I’m honestly here for it 😂🥂
The alt right is filled with fascists and nazis, I should know, I used to self identify that way back in my teenage years *shudders.* I realize that right populist movements can co opt Marxist rhetoric for a time, but they always have historically leaned towards excessive state control.
I will check out that Rubel tho, he does look interesting, I just read his wiki. It seems right up my alley.
Okay so we’re layers deep of conspiracism. I sincerely hope you meet some amazing queer people in your everyday life that perhaps will shake your strong convictions in this belief. I’m queer personally and ever since embracing my identity and gender expression, I’ve never felt better about myself. I feel amazing. And I hope every queer child gets the same opportunity growing up to explore themselves and their identity.
Cultural Marxism is a made up term used to replace the term cultural Bolshevism that has roots in anti semitism and nazism. Perhaps you weren’t aware.
Viva Gibb studied at the National Gallery School under John Brack, and was awarded a Diploma in Painting, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Printmaking.
From her student days, she was involved in radical left-wing politics, as well as social and feminist causes. She designed dozens of political posters in the 1970s and 1980s, which were made in direct response to specific events and debates. Gibb printed the posters at home in editions of around 100, and cycled around Melbourne at night to attach them to walls near newsagents.
The following day, when Melburnians would read the newspaper headlines, they would notice the nearby posters that presented a critical commentary on current political issues. The design of the posters is simple, and the message immediate, to make the point as effectively as possible.

History Repeats uses found materials from the artist's vast collection of what he specifically terms 'Aboriginalia'.
'Aboriginalia' objects are linked by their appropriation of First Nations Australian iconography to serve as domestic decorative design. History Repeats is part of the artist's ongoing interrogation into the appropriation of Indigenous histories and cultures and the implications of inauthentic cultural engagement.

So its not just men and women. People can be in the middle.
I think we are fundamentally using different definitons of these words which I admit can be hard to definest times.
I wont deny im not familiar with marx as I should be. But i do acknowledge that marxism had been bastardized as a state ideology by the likes of lenin and stalin, which id a complete farce that is still perpetuated by tankies today. I appreciate your level of nuance when it comes to this, its hard to come by when discussing communism.
Intersex people are a mental disorder? Yes or no.
I think you should read up more on communism before you speak on it. I don’t necessarily agree with communist solutions alot of the time, but that doesn’t mean I critique the ideology for things it doesnt propose.
Those are lock boxes for keys to apartments. When you rent an airbnb, they give you the code to a specific box, you unlock it, then get the keys to the apartment. Many times the building owners or city restrict short term rentals, so you put the keys somewhere else near by.
The weather is nice, a bit of rain, not cold, not hot.
Yeah, I’m staying in Collingwood/Fitzroy. It’s nice.
We’ve thought about how to bridge replies back. It is possible but won’t be really elegant. @npub1uuc…atty is doing the dev work, and he’s got a list of backlog things to fix / implement post-nostrasia.
I strongly suspect we have vastly different politics and tastes.
I don’t travel much in comparison to my past. At one point I had over 30 weeks in a row on a plane. Now I sometimes go a month or two between trips.
Melbourne feels like a bigger version of Portland. Which is to say, exactly the kind of city I like. I want to spend more time here.

I’m not convinced that we can have viable alternatives to the state without significantly sacrificing our lifespans do to a lack of infrastructure to support the world populations.
Yeah like I like the part about the international transactions and not having to pay exchange rates and the like. That’s probably my favorite part about crypto.
It’s not my favorite thing in the world*
I’m not opposed to the idea theoretically because you’re adding value to the consumer but I want to know what safeguards are in place to not spam. Cuz I get really small zaps from bots frequently and it’s my favorite.
What is communism to you lol
If you can make a case why this would solve any social problems, go for it
The saying is actually “the love of money is the root of all evil”
I think I’m in the minority of nostr users who doesn’t believe that getting rid of fiat would substantially solve our problems 😁
Money is made up. Post-Keynesian economics ftw.
