Theoretically that should let me "prove" to Google who I am at any time no matter where I'm at. Haven't tested the theory though. npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt @npub18dc…dkle I have yet to actually meet an "extremist" in real life. Maybe that's just because I'm lucky though. On the other hand, I've seen people try to redefine extremism in order to make a group they dislike look bad. npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt I wish laptop batteries were still made the way they used to be. I have a Lenovo 3000 C200 machine here, 32-bit, 1 GB RAM. The thing is almost 20 years old (released in 2006), appears to still have its OEM battery, it's so old parts of the hardware are showing signs of failure... and the battery still works like a champ. It's wild. #laptop #battery npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt Alright, Windows app was a fail, but other things are working out well enough. npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt alright, I am victorious! And of course the first thing I had to do after getting the OS installed was try to install Wine on it, followed by a Windows application. So... will report back if I come out alive. npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt Welp, I'm on a roll tonight. First I installed #Haiku (a BeOS clone) without fully wiping the old Debian installation off the disk, so that didn't work, then I did a proper install... and forgot to mark the partition as active. 🤦 I may or may not emerge with a working install by the end of the night if this keeps up :P npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt I need a terminal that, when I try to open a new instance of it, it just pops open my existing terminal window with a new terminal tab (as opposed to making a whole new window). Or I get to doctor the screenshot. I'll probably end up doing the latter. npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt Made this abomination trying to NOT have to download the whole whopping Win11 ISO just to get a user interface screenshot for some documentation. #linux #windows #debian #win11 https://s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com/thereslife/media_attachments/files/112/572/735/178/546/850/original/7e066ec513068e63.png npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt @npub142f…qdrj You might be interested in the Fedora Everything ISO - it's a netinstaller similar to Debian's installer. npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt @npub1ypg…zl93 rofl my boss needs to see this npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt Alright, lesson learned, don't listen to new music albums while trying to work. Stuff about supporting old programming languages, enabling running old operating systems, etc., though, sounds neat. I personally love trying to get ancient hardware to work with modern software, and have pulled it off successfully a few times. npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt Oh well this is laughable. These were licenses that were entirely unused. Why did they buy them? Because the person auditing their license compliance didn't know that it was possible for a PC to have a legally usable OS on it without a Windows license. npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt @npub12hn…ln26 @npub184l…2u75 @npub1qh6…7gez @npub1tp2…4l9u @npub1gj9…wshu @npub1h70…kkwc As someone else commented, it looks like Wayland support is in the works. But if it were to remain X11-only, I would worry, since Red Hat is the primary maintainer of X.Org and they've already deprecated it for RHEL 9 and it will be absent entirely in RHEL 10. Meaning when RHEL 9 goes EOL, X.Org is essentially going to be unmaintained upstream unless other people come in and save it. npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt @npub1ftj…4fen Homeservers. LXQt has a place in my heart because it's the default DE of Lubuntu, which I love using and am an active contributor to. XFCE though just has something about it that I love. The aesthetic is beautiful in general and it's incredibly customizable, far more than any DE other than KDE Plasma. I never have a spare system to install Xubuntu on though so I hardly use it :( My primary DE though is KDE Plasma. That's what runs on my daily driver (a Kubuntu Focus XE Gen 1, one of kfocus.org's older models). npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt It's amazing how many different styles the same Psalm can be rendered in, all of them beautiful in a different way. The following three songs are dramatically different, yet two of them are directly based on Psalm 46 and the third uses a verse from it as part of the chorus. Tell me which one is your favorite! Piracy and copyleft are mutually exclusive, because *copyleft only works when copyright is enforced.* If it's fine to rip off someone else's hard work because the terms they license their products under are problematic, why is it wrong for someone to rip off a FOSS dev because the terms they license their products under are problematic? You can't steal proprietary content and defend libre content at the same time. It's obvious that we want FOSS developers to succeed and the licensing terms they offer their software under to be followed. If we believe that, we should follow other people's licenses too. #piracy #opensource #foss #copyleft #copyright #law #licensing #gpl npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt I'm a bit irked that many of the people who are advocates for and supporters of free-as-in-freedom software are also advocates for and supporters of piracy. Piracy and copyleft are mutually exclusive, because *copyleft only works when copyright is enforced.* If you're going to rip off the hard work of other people because you don't like the terms they licenses their services and products under, you have no right to be upset when those same people rip off the work of FOSS devs because they don't like the terms they license their services and products under. If you're going to stand with libre software, you must also stand against piracy. #piracy #foss #opensource #copyright #copyleft #rights #law npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt Turns out if you start KDE Plasma in Arabic, the entire user interface flips horizontally (presumably to work better with right-to-left text). This is blowing my mind. 🤯 #linux #ubuntu #kde #plasma #arabic #localization https://s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com/thereslife/media_attachments/files/111/914/509/226/028/565/original/a08e0d1ece71cf54.png npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt Text is one of the most fundamental things people work with when using a computer. Yet there's a lot more to text than meets the eye - text encodings, codepages, scancodes, font hinting and kerning, complex script handling, endianness, OS-dependent line endings, extended ASCII for drawing "pictures" in text, control "characters", etc., etc. I'd have to learn a fair bit in order to make a good article on it, but should I try and write an article on what a computer's idea of "text" is and the history behind it? #text #computers #linux #windows #macos #classicmac #retrocomputing #msdos #unicode #fonts #hardware npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt Israel-Gaza conflict stuff, graphic content (no images) It's interesting to me that there are tons of nativity scenes in Gaza with Jesus placed in the rubble of airstruck buildings, but we don't have nativity scenes around the world with Joseph shot dead, infant Jesus beheaded by a Hamas militant, and Mary missing entirely because she was kidnapped. What kind of lopsided nonsense is this that we've all just mostly forgotten the initial October 7th massacre and are focused only on what Gaza is going through at Hamas's own hands? Anyone who looks at the mess can see that Hamas is killing their own civilians and just using Israel's weapons to do it (not to mention the occasional stray rocket fired at Israel that fails and blows up a Gaza hospital instead). Why are we upset with Israel for hospitals in Gaza going dark, refugee camps being bombed, and ambulances being targeted, rather than being furious with Hamas for withholding vital fuel and even stealing fuel from hospitals, hiding high-ranking members in densely civilian-populated areas, and using ambulances as weapon transport vehicles? #israel #gaza #hamas #war #standwithisrael npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt @npub1e2p…aqmc Ugh, that's awful. So sorry to hear that. npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt @npub1mv9…5avx I mostly agree with you on this one, though I think it's somewhat of an understatement to say a *mere* 0.7% of the population of Gaza has been killed in the war. 0.7% of America's population is well over a million people, and we as a nation would be absolutely devastated if a million of our people died in war. The fact that Israel's actions are well-justified and necessary now doesn't mean that things aren't still tragic. I fully support Israel in what they're doing, I just also see that this is awful. npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt @npub1e2p…aqmc Ah yes, the days when laptop touchpads still had actual mouse buttons. I still don't understand how almost every laptop manufacturer in the world decided mouse buttons were superfluous. I could actually click with perfect accuracy and precision back when they were a thing. Now I need an external mouse for that. 😕 npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt @npub1mv9…5avx I don't know of one that is free of charge and FOSS - I use Substack which is free of charge but not FOSS. You could use Nikola to make a static site blog (it's fairly simple IMO, simpler than Wordpress at least), then self-host the site on a free Oracle VPS instance. But you'd have to pay for a domain name, and I'm not sure how easy it would be to get comments going thereafter. Sorry if this isn't very helpful. npub1kajdlnj8g3usaj46s5djntm82rrq5fxn0y4pf2y3yqulp76mancsdqdh8c Aaron Rainbolt @npub1x7a…grqk It looks awesome on paper, but the poor software engineer who has to make a metric time to 24-hour time converter is going to cry.
