Scaling will remain a challenge. We will need many solutions.
LN will not suffice.
But we should not discount what LN contributes.
How much does LN⚡️ multiply Bitcoin tx capacity by?
My estimate: BTC + LN⚡️ can do 10.000x more txs than just BTC.
BTC + LN⚡️+ custodials can scale to 100.000.000x more txs than just BTC.
Not perfect. But better than what we had before.
The real challenge will be to provide self-custody for sovereign individuals at global scale. However given the tiny demand for it at the moment, there are few incentives for entrepreneurs to invest in this yet.
However I do believe it is technically possible. Trustless utxo sharing, timelocks, multisig... the tools are there to build it. What is not there (yet) is 100 million users willing to pay 10.000 sats/year for the solution.

Unfortunately for China, India can also do the math and decides to abandon neutrality at the perfect moment. As Chinese fleets are tied up in Oceania and the Pacific and Chinese armies are defending the coasts in the north... the Indian army launches a surprise attack on multiple fronts. India enters Tibet, Thailand and even some core China provinces. The surprise attack is crippling.
China and Russia are forced to sue for peace almost immediately.

At this point USA is rocking a powerful 17 SC economy. With another 8 from its allies in NATO it's significantly superior to the sum of China's 10 and Russia's 8... but not overwhelmingly so.
However the NATO naval superiority is key in the battle of the Pacific. The US will be able to bring to bear 5 fleets in the Pacific theater plus 4 from Australia. China's 3 fleets will be pushed back very quickly unless something changes very quickly.

Let's wargame WW3 in 2025 using Diplomacy.
The game limits many things... but let's try to do a decent approximation both for GDP and military power.
For example USA GDP is 35 trillion. Military spending is 1 trillion. So US starts with 10 easy SCs (still takes time to get them, representing time spent on industrial production, etc).
China GDP is 18 trillion, military spending less than half the US. So china gets 7 SCs unopposed and fewer starting units.
Similar calculation for Russia, Europe, India and other players... Middle East is complicated as there is a certain balance of power between Iran, Saudi, Israel, Turkey... but for game reasons we'll treat them as one and keep them neutral at the start.

Successful political movements win by getting their demands included by ALL parties.
There are 50M+ #Bitcoin users in the USA.
They should have enough clout to get ALL political parties to court them and compete for their vote.
So far Kennedy and Ramaswamy have been most vocal pro-Bitcoin. Trump has made some vague "pro-crypto" statements. Biden has been actively anti.
To avoid empty promises the Bitcoin voting block should demand clear, in writing promises to:
1. Defend Bitcoin individual custody.
2. Defend free speech including for Bitcoin transactions.
3. Fight taxes on Bitcoin.
4. Defend freedom to transact in Bitcoin.
5. Defend privacy.
Make a "Bitcoin pledge" including these 5 demands. Ask all candidates to publicly endorse it in writing. Shame the ones that don't.
Make sure that every bitcoiner knows which candidates are defending their rights and who is not.

The Green movement is just one example. There are countless others... feminism, diversity, socialism, vegetarians, animal rights, independence movements, etc, etc... if you can set out your goals clearly, gather people around a cause and act with persistence, you will probably win.
Who loses? Those who don't organise, plan and act.

Let's look at an example of how each of these have been used successfully by the Green movement in the past 20 years.
1. IDEAS. Green activists went from being derided by the media in the '50s and '60s to having their ideas promoted at every school, university and media outlet by the '90s. They went from having to print their own pamphlets to owning the message.
2. GOLD. Green activists went from poor tree-hugging hippies to indirectly controlling trillions through ESG programs at the largest companies in the world. They now control entire ministerial budgets to push their agenda.
3. GUNS. Green activists went from eco-terrorism to using govt. force to enforce their regulations. From Unabomber to being the police.
4. Political action - despite never topping 15% in any european national election, through negotiation and coalitions green politics has dominated regulation in major economic sectors from energy to agriculture.
5. Legal action - before they wrote the laws, they used whatever legislation was already in their favour to win small victories, gain funding and make noise, pushing for more favourable legislation. US EPA lawsuits and class action suits were the start, but now green policies are the law in many countries.
6. Disobedience - when the law is not in their favour and the penalty is low, they break it. If enforcement is weak, they win. If enforcement is cruel and violent, they win sympathy and call attention to injustice.
7. Economic action - green boycotts, blackmail and threats have had huge impact on business practices. The largest and most powerful companies in the world tremble and comply. An eco scandal is one of the scariest prospects for shareholders.

In short - they had goals, they secured resources and they acted. they achieved a lot.

Gold, Guns and Ideas.
You have an idea of how the world is wrong and how to make it better. You have an objective to reach or at least a direction that you want to move in. How do you go about making that change a reality?
1. IDEAS - information moves the world. If all media is controlled by status quo preserving forces, how can you fight against that? Simple: create your own media to first gather all like minded people and then educate others.
2. GOLD- money moves the world - you will need resources for all other steps. Political campaigning, legal action... everything needs funding.
3. GUNS - like it or not, you will need force for self defense. Even peaceful activists need to raise the cost of physical attack or intimidation. If your voice can be silenced through violence, you will get nowhere.
Once you have secured these three basic resources you can move on to action. Measure your forces and examine the most productive strategy for incremental gains.
4. Political action - a lot can be achieved through political pressure in democratic countries by an organised minority. Just a few elected representatives can multiply your voice and negotiate advances. Even the threat of backing a different party (when made by a large enough number) can get existing parties to include your demands in their program.
5. Legal action - if there are laws on the books that you can use to defend and advance your ideas... use them! It's expensive but precedent is a strong influence. If the status quo has contradictory laws... make them fight!
6. Disobedience - raise the cost of enforcement for unjust measures. Make sure to plan and measure so that risk incurred is lower than cost created.
7. Economic action - boycott, lobbying and selective spending are very powerful. Most businesses don't have strong ideology and will happily bend to a minority's wishes as long as they have nothing to lose. Organised shareholder pressure is particularly effective.
8. Make noise - the squeaky axle gets the grease. You can be ignored if you don't focus on maximising visibility. If your actions are visible enough they will drive the news cycle and incite discussion of your ideas.

The point of Bisq being a DEX, not requiring identity and not using reputation is precisely to reduce the need for trust. It's a trust-minimised system.
Security deposits and multisig are used in contracts to minimise risk, reduce incentives for fraud and reduce the need for trust.
In the best case, like BTC-BSQ atomic swaps, there is zero risk of fraud. No trust, reputation or identity is needed.

Many social media platforms were created promising free speech. Many were created in reaction to censorship. All failed.
Nostr will succeed where so many others have failed.
But let's look at some of the failures and why they failed.
Many popular platforms never even tried. They directly enforce govt censorship or surveillance or both. Including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Wechat...
Others were created explicitly to fight censorship and soon fell into it themselves for partisan reasons: Gab, Parler, Truth...
Some started relatively free but came increasingly under pressure from advertisers, govts and others to "moderate" and censor: Twitter, Reddit... Their investors, advertisers and legal counsel told the company that there was no other choice. Even Twitter/X post-Elon censors massively outside the US in accordance with local laws. The founder of Telegram had to flee Russia and the US to keep a decent amount of free speech, but that will not last long as there is a clear central point of pressure.
A few saw the problem and tried to build a network that was more decentralised: Mastodon, BlueSky, SSB... it's too soon to tell, but others have pointed out technical flaws.
Nostr has the best chance of success and survival. It's FOSS. It's decentralised. It's a protocol, not a platform.

Of course another, even more stupid way to manage the market is to limit who can buy and sell. In the limit having a monopoly seller. Since "only authority can be trusted", only authority can license someone to sell (or buy).
Unfortunately we see many examples of this in our world.
It is inevitably abused by the monopoly holder to extract rents and exploit those forced to buy from it.

A good example of this is the institution of money.
Social credit and reputation can work well in a small community.
But what do you do in a large market with 1000s of participants?
The stupid, costly, tyrannical way to do it is to put a cop on every entrance, register everyones identity, keep huge ledgers of all the credits between participants, spend huge amounts on enforcement to crack down hard on those who don't pay.
The institution of money was a better solution. Once the buyer receives the merchandise and the seller receives the money the exchange is complete. No need to keep track of anything or identify everyone. Enforcement is needed only in a tiny minority of cases. You only need negative reputation (ie: keep track of a few thieves and scammers) but most honest participants can move freely.
You reduce cost of enforcement, maximise freedom for everyone and increase the openness and scope of the market.

People yearn for the tribe. All our instincts pull us to a small, high trust, homogeneous groups where reputation matters.
High civilisation requires more complex institutions that scale beyond these reputation and trust based relationships.
Authoritarians think that we can scale identity and reputation via facial recognition, social credit score and other automated impersonal replacements for trust. Their way leads to horrifying dystopia.
There is a better way. The Bitcoin way. A way to reduce the need for trust through openness, clear universal rules and equal access. Replace identity and reputation with institutions that make it difficult and costly to do evil.
Instead of universal surveillance and authoritarian control to keep people in check, which are inevitably abused by those in control of the system, decentralisation and trust minimised relations allow for massive scale societal interaction with freedom and low risk of deceit or abuse.

Peaceful dispute resolution in high complexity, chaotic, low trust systems is a most interesting study subject.
The game theory is bonkers... and yet, it has many historical precedents... The Holy Roman Empire, Renaissance Italy, Greek City states... are all worthy of study.
Achieving peace is never about "who is right" because you can bet your ass that each side has a different version of the truth and won't agree on that.
It's about "we will both lose more by continuing to fight than finding a way to live together".
The most extreme case is ofc the MAD of nuclear war.
But there are many degrees of the same.
Think post WWII German-French relations or the Congress of Vienna after the Napoleonic wars.
A very medieval method was to mix peace treaties with marriage. The Hapsburg motto:
'ALII BELLA GERUNT, TU FELIX AUSTRIA NUBE'
Is the medieval equivalent of "make love, not war"
Hostage exchange, peace marriage, external guarantors, mixed law enforcement, DMZs, neutral arbitrators, etc, etc... there are many, many peacemaking and peace-keeping techniques with a long track record.
When trust is very low, there is also the gradual, incremental approach to build trust. After several steps of increasing trust you can start building more long lasting agreements.
