Let’s talk about what “silencing” is then, now that we have talked about remote suspend. Silencing is just telling server A that you want to disgard mail from server B *unless* it is addressed to someone in server A’s mailbox. That’s it, this is why when you silence an instance you can still see posts in regards to boosts, quotes, pings, replies. Silencing is pretty cool because it allows you to still get mail from server B while at the same time not being overwhelmed with all of the mail you want to discard. This sounds a bit over the top when you look at smaller instances hosting ~30 users. Imagine an apartment complex with 228k users. That is a lot of mail, especially when the mail is not sorted to see if there’s threats, illegal stuff and so on. Silencing can be a way of keeping two instances federated with each other, preserving existing connections and not dealing with unwanted connections.
Now, let’s look at what these sort of mailbox connections actually look like. These are numbers that are pulled from woem.men and transfem.social both instances as of writing this I am administrator of. Assuming woem.men is instance A here. Woem.men subscribes to 1,515 individual mailboxes from transfem.social (instance B). According to instance A, instance B has subscribed to 1,545 individual mailboxes. Keep in mind, user counts do not matter for these instances. 1 user can follow all of the users on transfem.social and vice versa. That is why they are so high compared to the user count of both instances. According to instance B (transfem.social) there are 1,628 subscribed to mailboxes from instance A. There are 1,439 mailboxes from instance A that are subscribed to instance B. How this plays out is because there is so much mail to send back and forth, the servers are constantly exchanging this mail. They are more up to date with each other because they constantly have to exchange mail. 3/?

Primarily, we are going to focus on multi user instances. Think of two shared mailboxes at two different apartment complexes. Instead of going through a central place to dump all mail without someone addressed you can do a bit better. Each individual mailbox can send and receive to another mailbox. From one apartment complex to the other. This is handled the same way. server A will collect all of the mail that server B has sent to it. Server A will then go back, and instead of it being exclusive one piece of mail per subscriber it is just stored as one piece of mail that all subscribers can access. This also can end up in global/firehose tab. Now, there are exceptions to this. When you put a post in limited modes such as follower-only, unlisted and so on it does not behave exactly like this.
When you have a follower-only post, it is only sent to the intended recipients by the server. It is still picked up by the server, but the server is expected to allow access to only people that are allowed access. If server A had mail addressed for users not on server B, server B would not be able to fetch it (in theory). Great, now let’s talk about federation with this. If server A and B are talking to each other, this is called federation. They are communicating, they only tend to establish federation status when at least a couple subscribers exist on both ends. What is limited federation in respect to things such as remote suspend then? Say that I decide I don’t want mail from X on server A anymore, but I want to receive the rest of the mail from server A. I can just suspend X on server A, so that all of the mail from other users on server A can still get through but X cannot. 2/?

Heavily simplified analogy of fediverse federation for the people new to the fediverse. All your instance is doing when you post is sending out your post as if it was an envelope to everyone on the list. To get on the list, you must subscribe. Fediverse instances are a lot like a group mailbox seen at an apartment complex. The difference between a single user instance, and an instance with a couple users is simple. If you have a single user instance, the mailman (in this case, other servers that are dispatching mail to you) will come through with only mail meant for you. When you have multiple users, the server will dispatch that mail in bulk. It will give your server the ability to organize it in the mailboxes itself. The big problem here is that in order to get mail you must subscribe to get mail. How do you subscribe to things that you aren’t aware of yet? We have a variety of options here.
A relay would equivalent to your server walking down to your local postal office. A central place for other servers to pick up mail. Each server when they come into the postal office will take a collection of mail (well, as long as the mail is not addressed to anyone in particular such as with private posts), and will hand each server in the post office a copy. Your server comes back with this mail. What it does with this mail can really depend on the configuration, but you can see the unorganized mail on several softwares by going to “global/firehose” tab. Now, not every software supports relays. Not every server wants to be attached to a relay since that’s a lot of mail to handle without any assumption that it’s relevant. Once two servers have met, and there is subscribers between them is when it gets interesting. 1/?
