Character, innit
What's the line between conforming with correct thoughts and a pluralist society?

It's all kinda funny
"openly sharing"
How dare he!
A still from a YouTube video at more than two hours in
My God!
I didn't know that a man's character could be summarised by a few social media posts
I didn't know that sharing something implied agreeing with everything that is said within
In the immortal words of Rich Hickey
I still don't know that! 🤣
The most I agree with anyone is like only 70.2%
Is character scrutiny something that the world needs
Ultimately it's empty theatre
The world isn't improved by dividing it into good people and bad people
It's improved by building things
That requires cooperation
That requires forgiving the social media posts that we disagree with
And promoting the talents of other humans as flawed as ourselves
Agreed
The Nostr user base is solid, awesome and growing
The apps are getting better, the NIPs are getting better, problems are being resolved
Bluesky otoh is in a really precarious situation. I kinda hope that they dig themselves out of it because I like the devs but I wonder at other forces in play. I think Mike Masnick should have talked with you 🤷

🤔 this might be a hard problem for Bluesky

There is no concept in this Fediverse Report of censorship resistance having any social effect beyond 'Nazis can post'
Like for example, what incentives does a pluralist society offer vs one where tribal actions can deplatform individuals. How does free speech affect development of empathy.
The more and more I see of mainstream Fediverse culture the more deeply underwhelming it is.

In freely associating networks the topology emerges from the interplay between the constraints of the protocol and market forces
The Fediverse is a classic federated topology
https://i.nostr.build/TDrsnVG1toZV9uxo.jpg
Blue represents clients and orange represents servers ("instances" in Fediverse parlance)
Servers may choose not to federate to other servers
Users may self-host (one server per client) in which case the distinction between client and server is more a matter of code and computing distribution than a meaningful feature of the topology
Nostr is kind of half-federated with even greater fungibility between client and server
https://i.nostr.build/yIqNssNGiOKjDo2D.jpg
There is nothing stopping Nostr from rearranging into a Fediverse topology
There is nothing stopping Nostr or the Fediverse from rearranging into a centralized topology
https://i.nostr.build/WTQaCYQdt7F1T4Zk.jpg
Or even a distributed topology

I'm amazed that digital networks have been around for 65 years, the internet for 35 years, and we still don't have words to talk about networks.
There's only a weak consensus about the meaning of network topologies like "federated", "decentralized", "distributed".
And there's no terminology for talking about the human control of those networks.
People use "decentralized network" and assume that you know that they mean human control.
Others think that human control and topology are the same thing.
Imagine if all nostr relays were owned by one corporation. The network topology would still be decentralized!
"Decentralized network control" doesn't cut it because "control" in terms of networks usually means automated.
Network science is a field of study but the language is still pre-scientific 😔
Definition

Maybe a child of b) and c)
I guess partly b) because relays can and do but not always federate?
The node to relay relationship is many-many which isn't any
nostr is weirdalized 🤔
The shifting meaning of decentralized
It used to be only b)
https://i.nostr.build/wtxs7zh97YIEeRFn.jpg

Now that's called federated and decentralized means not a)
https://networkcultures.org/unlikeus/resources/articles/what-is-a-federated-network/
https://i.nostr.build/71olTCTVeW607CDy.jpg
Yup
If hate speech is responsible for hate acts
Speech supporting anything that is currently illegal is a crime
"robbing banks is cool" is responsible for bank robberies
Hollywood is responsible for gang violence
It can't be any other way
"Bring down the government"
Crime
If speech is partly liable the act must have a corresponding *decrease* in criminal liability ... but that hasn't been reflected in any law
Most laws require demonstration of opportunity, ability and intent
The contradictions are immense
I think in theory you could swap out the AppView your PDS is connected to and everything would stay the same
But you couldn't do that with a relay. You'd need all the other architecture to connect to the new relay in order to maintain your apps and frens
Every component depends upon the relay
The way I see it (I'm thinking along the lines of deplatforming more than outages)...
Theoretically the AppViews are replaceable (assuming they're open source)
If the relay blocks your PDS and you connect to another relay, you need the entire rest of the architecture to also connect to that other relay to maintain your apps and frens
Each relay ingests the entire network
Each component ingests the entire network from each relay
So that's double the resources per component for 99.9999999% of the same data
Who is going to pay for that 🤔
I think it would have to be the new relay provider
Then where is the demand coming from to cover those costs
Sure it's from
https://bsky.social/about/blog/5-5-2023-federation-architecture
"but TF you can have multiple of those single control points"
No, no you can't when the single control point must ingest the entire network
At best the single control point moves to the AppViews... at $$$ cost (who pays?)
"parallel networks" = build yourself a Twitter, @nprofile…xuyp was right
I'm not saying that this system will be a social negative
I think quite probably the *opposite*
It's just not decentralized or even decentralize-able 😄
So it's something else
Something without a name
Centralized with plugin architecture
#nevent1q…xqac
This is not chaos
It's also not decentralized

Paid relays providers, please describe your product!
#nevent1q…8f08
Paid relays really need documentation
Are they pay to read, pay to write, or both?
If they're pay to read they're unsuitable as outbox relays
If they're pay to write and they don't accept replies from non-paying npubs to paying npubs they're unsuitable as inbox relays
What exactly am I paying for?
I've got no idea for any of those relays
Wait ... fuck Christmas cake?

Nice article
I grew up in the same era and at various points in my life I've identified with most political labels under the sun
My love affair with labels ended on Twitter, where I saw that almost everyone of all political stripes was a complete asshole
And the problem was the labels themselves
The final straw was seeing my self-righteous political tribe conduct online bullying campaigns against survivors of sexual abuse
It still shocks me to write that
So I left Twitter and the labels behind
Everyone is flawed, so yeah absolutely what people do, if they can manage to be kind to each other that's all that matters
Politically now my beliefs are too nebulous to fall into a category, I think
I value more freedom, that's about it
Political parties seem like a bit of an anachronism anyway, there are surely better ways of sharing a planet

Bluesky focusses on aggregates and quality levels
Nostr focusses on individuals and rights
So you have the Bluesky app which is high quality but the Bluesky network is entirely centralized
And you have a watertight Bluesky marketing program going VERY hard for a particular target audience
While #nostr isn't targetted
#naddr1qq…ddeg
The Yin and Yang of #nostr development
Nostr needs the enthusiasm and the energy to explore the protocol and do crazy shit at the edges
Nostr needs to get basic shit nailed down
Atm I feel the balance is too much Yang and @nprofile…pqw8 throwing a bucket of cold water is #goodvibesonly
Nostr devs could use a month or two of not writing new feature code and not starting new projects
Just testing, fixing, refactoring, going through open issues and merging bug fix PR's

https://i.nostr.build/3k27eYHFUN7liBGw.jpg
“Buddhist pessimism paralyzed India. State patronage helped it build massive centers of ‘education,’ but what use is an education that tells you that you cannot know the truth or improve the world to minimize suffering? Buddhism and its centers disappeared from India around the thirteenth century. Its sages were brilliant, but their pessimism prevented them from developing vibrant, political, legal, or economic theories and practices. They could not develop an interest in technology and science.”

Enshittification resistance is decentralization in theory
Censorship resistance is decentralization in practice
#naddr1qq…ddeg
This quote sounds (maybe) like Mike still views decentralization primarily through the lens of companies instead of individuals. In that case censorship resistance may continue to be a defining difference between #nostr and ATProto
“One of the key things that has fascinated me about Bluesky is that they have made it clear from the beginning that they recognize how a future version of the company could, itself, be a threat to the vision the current team has,” Mike Masnick concludes, “They are designing the system to be technically resistant to such a threat — which is why building an open protocol is so important.”
I wrote about that a little here. Enshittification resistance vs censorship resistance 😊

I tend to agree that Buddhism has been *relatively* less focussed on social matters than the Abrahamic faiths
Where I disagree is the formulation of Buddhist beliefs
Buddhism tries to remove attachment to concepts such as soul and existence
In doing so it teaches emptiness
Emptiness refers to the concept being empty not the reality being empty
Reality is neither empty nor not empty it just is
You just are
An elephant doesn't care where it sits
Buddhist teaching is caught in an eternal trap of using words to try to stop ppl from filtering their experience of reality through words
This can become highly confusing, including for Buddhists!

Continuing to refine it after 48 years is doubly so
"My PKMS is old.... 48 years and counting. It started out with index cards and marble composition notebooks. With notes spanning decades, it is vital to adjust the structure of the system over time to reflect how I personally have changed over the years and the changes in how I interact with those notes.
Just recently I restructured my notes to utilize the Johnny.Decimal method. This adjustment loosened up the structure to give it more breathing room and I can see that it will offer continued benefits 5-10 years down the road... perhaps longer."

TLDR; sanctions are not why Venezuelan pensioners are on $1 per day while the #bolibourgeoisie live the high life
#nevent1q…akf9
This is mostly incorrect
* Chávez did not nationalize the oil industry, it was nationalized in 1976 as the state-owned company PdVSA
* Chávez did not hold a referendum on nationalizing the oil industry
* There were no sanctions related to Chávez (not) nationalizing the oil industry
* The only economic sanctions the Obama administration imposed were in 2011, denying U.S. government contracts to PdVSA due to PdVSA supplying Iran. That was 2 years before Chávez died. Sanctions by the Obama admin after his death were targeted against individuals (denial of visa's, freezing of assets) for human rights abuses
* The 2011 PdVSA sanction *did not* hold Venezuelans in poverty. U.S. imports of Venezuelan crude increased in 2012 and GDP hit the highest ever level
* Crude prices collapsed by ~ 60% from 2013 - 2015 and with it the Venezuelan economy, exacerbated by government overspending, debt, waste, destruction of industry, corruption and inflation. See https://foreignpolicy.com/2018/07/16/how-venezuela-struck-it-poor-oil-energy-chavez/ for a sad history of how Chávismo destroyed their people's mineral wealth
* Economic sanctions were imposed in 2017 by Trump and continued by Biden until 2023. These were boneheaded and immoral and *did do* substantial harm to the already pulverized economy and neither removed Maduro's illegitimate (see coup 2016 - 2017) government nor resulted in democratic reforms

#bolibourgeoisie criminals & the Tascón list
The Tascón list was compiled by National Assembly member Luis Tascón at the request of Hugo Chávez, containing identifying information of 2.4 million Venezuelans who signed a petition for a Presidential recall referendum, a right guaranteed by the Constitution
It was used to fire Venezuelans from government jobs and deny them employment and government services

It's always about the palaces
Chavez had a huge pot of "public" funds he could dole out at will with zero transparency
Funds went missing, sometimes to the tune of $100+ billion per project
The Venezuelan state pension and minimum wage is $1 per day. In a year that will be worth 50% less at most.

The real coup
Disenfranchising ~ 21% of the Venezuelan electorate
@nprofile…t5ph
"The regime also severely restricted the voting rights of the more than seven million Venezuelans living in exile and made their participation impossible. Out of the more than 6.5 million Venezuelans that would be eligible to vote, only 69.000 were registered. Two days before the election, the regime suddenly shut down its border with Colombia, where three million Venezuelan refugees reside, to stop them from returning to cast their votes at home."

Predicating the legitimacy of Maduro's government on the election outcome is incorrect, although I understand the motivation
https://www.state.gov/assessing-the-results-of-venezuelas-presidential-election/
Maduro's government is illegitimate *regardless of the vote count*
It was formed by a coup in 2016, a real coup not a fake CIA coup
Maduro, in violation of the Constitution:
* illegally overthrew the elected opposition-led parliament
* illegally replaced the entire Supreme Court
* illegally barred opposition candidates and elected representatives
Prior to the coup Maduro said this, at an event to commemorate Hugo Chavez' failed 1992 coup which killed 143+ people
"Will the people allow the oligarchy, which won the National Assembly due to the confusion of a sector of our people, to take political power in Miraflores?"

There's a coup going on in Venezuela and it's not the CIA
How does Maduro's government get away with disqualifying opposition candidates contra the Constitution?
By replacing the Supreme Court, also contra the Constitution
"Will the people allow the oligarchy, which won the National Assembly because of the confusion of a section of our people, to take political power in Miraflores?"
"That is why we are preparing, so as not to allow it either by one way or the other, for the good or for the bad,"
Nicolás Maduro, Feb 4 2016

Also presenting doubts over the result as solely resting on vote counting fraud
And vote counting fraud as solely resting on an exit poll
Is doubly disingenuous politicking
"We have serious concerns that this result does not reflect the will and the votes of the Venezuelan people. By engaging in repression and electoral manipulation, and by declaring a winner without the detailed precinct-by-precinct polling results, or actas in Spanish, to support a claim, Maduro representatives have stripped the supposed election results they announced of any credibility."

4)
> "The registration of parties and candidates also did not meet international standards. Over the past few years, several opposition parties have had their registrations changed to leaders who favor the government. This influenced the nomination of some opposition candidates. Importantly, the registration of the candidacy of the main opposition forces was subject to arbitrary decisions of the CNE, without respecting basic legal principles."

How to steal an election
1) appoint your henchman as the head of the body that runs the election
On the left is Elvis Eduardo Hidrobo Amoroso
In 2023 Elvis was appointed by Maduro's party the PSUV to head the CNE (National Election Council)
Elvis is a member of the PSUV
Previously he was appointed by the PSUV as Comptroller General of Venezuela
During his tenure as Comptroller General he barred Maduro's opponent Juan Guaidó from running for office
It is likely illegal for a civil servant to bar anyone from running for office under Articles 62 and 65 of the Venezuelan Constitution
"Article 62
All citizens have the right to participate freely in public affairs, either directly or through their elected representatives.
The participation of the people in forming, carrying out and controlling the management of public affairs is the necessary way of achieving the involvement to ensure their complete development, both individual and collective. It is the obligation of the State and the duty of society to facilitate the generation of optimum conditions for putting this into practice."
"Article 65
Persons who have been convicted of crimes committed while holding office or other offenses against public property, shall be ineligible to run for any office filled by popular vote, for such period as may be prescribed by law after serving their sentences, depending on the seriousness of the offense."
The office of Comptroller General had previously barred Maduro's opponents Henrique Capriles and @nprofile…x937 Lopez
Elvis' CNE invited the Carter Center to observe the 2024 election
The Carter Center concluded:
"Throughout the electoral process, the CNE demonstrated a clear bias in favor of the incumbent."
"the registration of the candidacy of the main opposition forces was subject to arbitrary decisions of the CNE, without respecting basic legal principles"
"The Carter Center cannot verify or corroborate the results of the election declared by the National Electoral Council (CNE), and the electoral authority’s failure to announce disaggregated results by polling station constitutes a serious breach of electoral principles."

Just observations
65,000% inflation is inconsistent with 67.8% support
Maduro tanked the economy to the point it was at 20 years ago
Plus large scale human rights violations
Plus social unrest
Winning a third term with that record is unlikely

https://i.nostr.build/pX0tAAabdxDcVIjh.jpg
Nicolás Maduro assumed power in 2013
In 2018 the Venezuela inflation rate averaged 65,000% p/a
That year Maduro was declared winner of the Presidential election with 67.8% of the vote
The election was judged free and fair by Russia, China and North Korea
The Venezuelan government stopped publishing inflation figures that same year
Inflation is currently guesstimated at around 100-300% p/a
In March 2024 Maduro ordered an increase in the minimum wage of 30%, the first increase since 2022
The day before the 2024 Presidential election Maduro ordered a further 50% increase, bringing the minimum wage to $30 / month
Maduro was declared winner of the Presidential election with 51% of the vote
Human Rights Watch and the UN estimate Venezuelan security forces conducted 20,000+ extrajudicial killings during Maduro's rule
The Venezuelan government refer to these as "Operations for the Liberation of the People"

Big data is inevitable
If you "go dark" you're still flagged as anomalous
Only the most unbelievably moronic companies select by conformism
Unfortunately there's a lot of them
But the converse is also true
Good companies search for the anomalies
This has gone on for a long time
It happens in interviews
The difference is that there's more data
What is needed is more competition
A big problem in modern capitalism in that moronic survives and prospers
That's a function of abundant wealth
Corporate structures that rely on conformity are relics of the past
And need to be consigned to history along with suits and ties

This would be useful
Kind 3 is a replaceable event, there's no changelog
So I think it would have to be done client-side
The client would compare any kind 3 events containing your npub it retrieves against a cached list of all such events it has ever found
OR
We need a notification event kind representing a new follow, so when following someone the client publishes two events: the updated kind 3 list and the notification

I finally got how ATProto works on a basic conceptual level from this paper
https://arxiv.org/pdf/2402.03239
Having been none the wiser from reading the spec and other confused ppl on hacker news
That's my first gripe with Bluesky
Nostr and ActivityPub can both be understood in 5 minutes from reading their specs
ActivityPub is particularly well written
And it's not that ATProto is conceptually complex
But anyways, I appreciated the architecture of ATProto from a pure architecture point of view
But I think it's flawed in practical terms
Decentralization is small, many, cheap
ATProto is expensive
To develop applications for
And to run services on
And increasingly so the more decentralized it becomes
It's got a natural brake on decentralization
I'm going to sign up for Bluesky as I'm curious what the culture is like
Be interested to read your article!

A combined human-AI approach to spam labelling
A threshold number of spam reports triggers an AI bot
The bot reviews a self-selected sample of notes by the flagged account
The bot publishes a timestamped "spam" or "not spam" label
No further evaluations of that account are permitted until X time has passed
Clients can use "spam" labels to filter accounts outside of the user's social circle (follows & follows-of-follows, WoT etc)
Censorship-resistant and mistake-resistant
Can be applied to other types of content labelling

Welcome ✌️
Most ppl have checked out of the system, they just don't know it yet
I'm still reeling from Bluesky breaking their own protocol with a hardcode & recommending others do the same
The strangest thing is that it was completely unnecessary
For "good UX" just set a sane default Labeller & Feed generator. Their own protocol provides the solution.
If they truly believe that hardcoding is the right thing to do then they MUST also believe that their protocol is inadequate
That's what they're telling the world
Bizarre 🤷

Clients seem to be converging on a combination of respecting & allowing you to manage your inbox/outbox relays (global state) while also allowing you to configure relays specific to the client (and that configuration may be stored locally or broadcast as a client-specific relay list)
If you see inbox or outbox in a client relay config that's probably global state

"broken protocol" is a huge exaggeration
Break it all now
Developers, users, we're all early adopters
Things breaking comes with the territory
And those were our choices
Rn the network is entirely ppl with faith and passion for the protocol
Ppl who can bear the pain of things breaking for a better future
Choices
1) break things now
2) break things later when nostr has millions of daily users and functional business models
3) set a broken protocol in stone forever and ever
The nostr protocol of spraying JSON to a bunch of relays is hilarious af
AND it works!
The nice thing is that responsibilities can be shifted between clients and relays as needed
And the line between client and relay can become blurred as needed
Complexity creates rigidity
Over-engineering tends to be more problematic than under-engineering
#nevent1q…80xu
Bluesky is NOT easier to use than nostr!
https://i.nostr.build/AkyTX5JgiCzBTZ3L.jpg
You could build an AppView
Or use nostr & click remove relay button 🤔
The point of decentralization is user control
That means managing your network
We tend to gripe a bit but on nostr managing your network is just managing your relays
And that's pretty easy
On Bluesky managing your network means managing THIS
https://i.nostr.build/tlSNStD1UHQrUoR8.jpg
Bluesky only appears easier because users don't have the ability to manage their network
Few decentralized social network developers actually want decentralization
The inherent contradictions of Bluesky
1) we identify the problems of centralized moderation and implement a solution that lets users choose from decentralized moderation providers
https://i.nostr.build/8lwDaGkDFsw4nym4.jpg
2) we override our decentralized solution by *hardcoding* moderation and recommend that *other apps* (!) using the ATProto do the same
https://i.nostr.build/KPWpqBrPrJxCec9C.jpg
"to provide a strong foundation that upholds our community guidelines"
Means they want to control human behavior
Prediction: ATProto will never become effectively decentralized

#nevent1q…hgxy
Been looking at nostr relay implementations to use as a personal relay and installed two, chorus and nostr-rs-relay
Gotta say there was no cussing, which for setting up servers is unusual
For a personal inbox/outbox relay under active development I reckon chorus is a good option
* it's configured out of the box to only accept events authored by you or which you're tagged in
* anyone can download events from the relay but only you can download dm's
Other relay implementations don't have much flexible configuration, or they do but it's complex
And @nprofile…nq40 has written pretty much the gold standard in documentation https://github.com/mikedilger/chorus
So I'm using chorus as my inbox relay and nostr-rs-relay as my outbox relay (because I like to tinker)
