It's Sep 30th, which means it's a federal holiday in Canada and I get the day off work.
This "holiday" (the term suggests a rather cheerier tone than is intended) is a fairly new one, having just been instantiated in 2021. Truth and Reconciliation Day.
It's a morally fraught occasion, where sins of the past are meant to be reckoned with in the present. It's detractors will say that it's mostly just a day of hollow liberal pandering that doesn't accomplish much, and more or less boils down to White Guilt Day, and there may be some truth to that. Ultimately though, if you're fighting against legally mandated paid time off work, you're fighting a losing battle, transactional as that may be.
For myself, regardless of the imperfect nature of this day in actually addressing generational echoes of conquest and forced assimilation, this day need not go to waste. It is as good a day as any to reflect on struggles of power, clashes of cultures, and the harsh reality of what happens when technological asymmetries are forced into physical resolution.
All worthwhile things to consider, and as relevant as ever.
