Most of what we post is gone from our own memory within a week, so let's put something here that's meant to be read again.

Explaining asym crypto even in simple terms is a nightmare. I have to push explanations multiple times, and not everyone is able to grasp the basic concept of encryption and signing. While people are able to understand symmetric crypto, telling them to encrypt data using someone's else public key causes instant brain twisting and confusion. Add the fact you have to exchange keys from both sides and signing works using private keys, the confusion grows into oblivion
Basically my vibe code experiment of the week.
Mine has this concept:
- If we come across it we cache it.
- To our peers we forward the query the user did so we get their data, along with a list of who we already queried so they don't all spam the same relay. Anything that comes back we cache.
- If its sent to us we forward it if we dont already have it.
- If we come across a new relay we save it. If we come across a relay often we prioritize it to automatically stay in touch with relays people actually use.
- We announce ourselves over the network so others can find us. (This bit I still need to refine, its probably good enough that only the public nodes do this). These events are tempoary events relays dont have to keep long, and frequently overwritten with an updated copy. Now other nodes find us.
- We centralize by promoting peers we like to ultrapeer if we need more of those. Those facilitate things like holepunching and fetch more events than leaf nodes. (Gnutella style).
So far todays test runs went very well once I found why it was bombarding relays with requests (the ai added some stuff I didn't ask for that amplified queries, and it lacked good ajti looping I now added). How well it works in practise when theres a lot of them has to be seen though. But its designed to be extremely resillient to where the network just heals itself and where all these nodes are aggregator relays.

Cheesy Ox Meat Stew with Green Beans (from a photo)
This hearty stew combines tender ox meat with green beans and a rich, flavorful broth, topped with melted cheese for a comforting twist.

Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs ox meat, cut into chunks

That second guess really pissed me off.
I wanted to find out if I can do without an Apple laptop. I don't really feel the UNIX below macOS anymore and now it's clogging up my disk with AI models I don't want, use or need. I've seen two approaches to get rid of it without disabling SIP (system integrity protection, basically making it impossible to change critical paths of the OS itself during runtime, so actually useful in terms of security) but even having to fiddle around like that reminds me of 90s times and registry hacks. Running containers requires a VM hogging RAM and compute. Tahoe really cost me some performange on both Air and Pro. I barely use any native macOS-only apps except for some helpers (like Monitor Control) or Nostur anyways.
So I did some digging. While there are neatly put together new laptops by Dell for example, I didn't want to spend 2k on a whim. That's what landed me on Huawei Matebook X Pros for a while but getting one with QWERTY is tricky because the main market (US) sanctioned them, so there's almost no need to produce those keyboard configs because they focus on the European market instead. I found a few at a bargain in Poland and the Netherlands. The first banned me on my first message to a seller because I must've seemed like a scammer (new account, wants to ship to another country, all sus), the other never even allowed me to send a message (so I went via proxy, thanks @npub1qe3…zefe) but the price never seemed right so there was no deal.
At some point I found some press renders of a device that looked like the Huawei I was searching for but wasn't. It was an Honor. Previously a subsidiary of Huawei, now they seem to be independent, at least officially. And man, that was decent hardware.
Magnesium chassis, 1.3kg, 14" 3:2 OLED 120hz display, a great keyboard with MacBook like travel, fingerprint sensor, detachable webcam (so physically off per default, no notch), 6-8h of battery depending on use, an i5 with Intels XE graphics and 32GB of shared memory.
Damn, what's not to like. Except that it booted into Windows 11 after unboxing, I mean.
And according to my research it was likely to get most of it to run on Linux, except for the fingerprint sensor. Which was the first thing I got to work after installing Omarchy.
Replicating the new laptop's Windows userspace psychoacoustic bass EQ (where some part of the firmware bumps certain frequencies of the tweeters to simulate more bass and offset a rather flat sound) required taking apart the Windows driver, letting GLM5.3 probe results itself via the microphone and letting me do a blind test with my own ears. It's still laptop sound but not as tinny anymore.
OLED display now does native 10bit without dithering. That one landed me on a black screen on boot but now we found a way to experiment without a reboot and there was a previous-state kernel ready for boot if anything were to go wrong. Backlight levels were adjusted to the individual panel as well. Keyboard backlight was missing a keymap only.
All improvements have been upstreamed or added to 3rd party repos where other people already collected various patches and fixes for other generations of that product line.
Of course I immediately installed my custom Solaris themes. Thanks to OLED I noticed some contrast issues that are now fixed.
It really is the time of the malleable computer.
Run Linux. Fix what doesn't work with your agent. More sovereign computing to you all.
