Correlations, causal relations are there. But we need to point them out, to find working solutions to the problems that. influence our life.
We need no media coverage or socials to program our brains with predefined narratives. Politicians are paied to lesten to the citizens and find solutions. Not to make us belief in their problems to be of importance.

By the time Michael Eavis phoned Bruce Kent in 1981, the Glastonbury Festival was already thirteen years old. But something deeper had called him there long before that phone call. Not marketing strategy. Not profit margins. The ground itself.
An Island That Never Fully Left
Glastonbury sits on what was once an island — a high point in the Somerset Levels where water and land negotiated a perpetual boundary. The Tor rises seventy-seven metres above the marshes, visible for miles. In wetter centuries, it stood alone. You reached it by boat or causeway, walking narrow paths above drowning fields.
That geography wrote mythology into the landscape before anyone picked up a pen.
Avalon — the Isle of Apples where King Arthur sailed to recover from his wounds — wasn't poetic invention. It was description. Welsh speakers named it Ynys Afallon. The name meant exactly what the terrain showed them: a place separated by water, reachable yet remote, neither fully land nor sea.
Monks at Glastonbury Abbey knew this too. When they "discovered" Arthur's bones in 1191, they did so on ground that felt older than history. Whether it was strategic PR or genuine belief doesn't matter. The lie worked because the setting made it credible.
And then there's Joseph of Arimathea. Legend says he arrived from Judea, brought the Holy Grail, and planted his staff in the Tor. It grew into the Holy Thorn — a tree that blooms twice yearly, defying botanical expectation. Medieval church tradition placed Joseph in Britain. Whether fact or hagiography, it anchored Christian sacredness onto pre-Christian earthworks.
Layers accumulated. Pagans → Christians → pilgrims → disbelievers → seekers. Each era added without erasing the ones beneath.
Environmental Determinism, Revisited
Geographers call it environmental determinism: the idea that physical geography shapes human behaviour, culture, and social organisation. Critics dismiss it as reductionist. Practitioners know there's truth worth reckoning with.
Consider Glastonbury's development:
Marshland isolation created defensive advantage → monastery established
Seasonal flooding enforced calendar awareness → agricultural rhythms dominated
Tor visibility offered navigation landmark → pilgrimage routes converged
Causes and raised tracks forced concentration → settlement clustered
The land didn't dictate every choice. But it made some impossible, others easier, and certain meanings feel inevitable.
Mountain societies develop differently than coastal ones. River valleys birth empires. Islands cultivate trade or isolation depending on their size. Geography sets the stage. We improvise the script.
But here's what urban life forgets: we're still animals subject to geology and meteorology. Concrete, climate control, and supply chains don't cancel biology. They delay it. Floods happen. Heat islands cook. Water scarcity bites. The land remembers and reclaims eventually.

Rural communities retain the dialogue. They haven't forgotten how to listen.
Even Glastonbury today, despite the crowds and commercialisation, retains a thread of that. Farmers still work the fields surrounding the festival grounds. The Tor still rises regardless of ticket sales. The thorn still blooms out of season.
1981: The Land Returns
Which brings us back to that summer weekend in 1981. Three thousand people gathered on Pilton Farm. Not just for music. Something larger.
Michael Eavis didn't choose CND randomly. Bruce Kent's peace movement needed visibility. Glastonbury needed organisational support. Both recognised the terrain carried meaning beyond entertainment.
The CND symbol atop the Pyramid Stage wasn't decoration. It was continuation — another layer in the sacred strata. Thousands standing together around shared values, voluntarily, joyfully, under open sky near a hill that has drawn gatherings for millennia.

For one week, the buffer disappeared. Thousands returning to a place where the land still mattered, where the myth persisted, where the physical world demanded acknowledgment.

The irony? Even this conversation about environmental determinism happens in minds shaped by reading, culture, language — all products of landscapes far from Somerset clay. So perhaps the land determines us, just through longer loops. Through generations of story-telling. Through collective memory passed across centuries. Through architecture that mimics hills. Through festivals that gather strangers on ancient ground.

The land doesn't need us to believe in it. It just persists. We keep finding meaning in its persistence — sometimes correctly, sometimes romantically, always imperfectly.
