The entire raison d'etre of Scrum is to service a backlog. If you have no backlog, you have no Scrum. Most of us think that it's not a great idea for our own work to pile up to the point that we have a huge backlog of unstarted work. When something needs doing, do it. Same for a company. If we need a backlog, we've already screwed up, probably to the point that Scrum or it's ilk won't help.

Google search is a great case study of how a bad business model can destroy a product. The added value of search is the ability to _quickly_ find a _reliable_ answer. Google now fails on both counts. The fact that you are forced to wade through so many ads (most disguised to appear as legit results) to find a trustworthy answer adds considerable friction and time. Also, AI is inherently unreliable, so the new AI stuff is just more garbage to wade through. More delays to get to a result. Neither DuckDuckGo nor Kagi have these problems.

Another interesting thing about a Modally shown <dialog> is that simply hiding it with CSS wont work because when opening, it sets the rest of documents content to `inert`.
I was trying to "close" the modal with just CSS has, when the stripe iFrame was on the page, but that isn't possible. Must be done with CSS

Anyone know if Stripe JS has an event for when their 3D secure modal opens up?
Having the same issue I had with PayPal where my <dialog> modal is overtop their Modal, so you can't see or interact with it.

It’s a race to the bottom in consumer AI B2C.
Apple doesn’t pay OpenAI to offer ChatGPT to its ~1 billion customers. Those customers get used to “AI” being free for text generation, image generation.
The only real revenue generation is in B2B AI. Expect another gold rush there.

Sprints in no way help with prioritization. you can prioritize just fine without them. Yes, the Sprint helps the PO, but I don’t think we should have PO‘s either. They are a single point of failure. Finally, are you saying that if you discover mid Sprint that the thing you are working on isn’t worth doing, you should continue working on it? Ad hoc scope changes are central to agility. Deal with it.

Most existing T&Cs were written before GenAI was a thing. Before vendors trained their own models.
Sections that allow vendors to have a royalty-free, worldwide license to modify and distribute a customer's work will have to be updated w GenAI clauses.

Any org that’s using canned processes is led by people who refuse to take responsibility. They are passing off decisions about the best way to work to whoever came up with the “framework” so they can have somebody to blame. If they actually cared about improvement, they’d deeply study both their organization and various ways of working, then build a system that will work for them. Canned “frameworks” and the like are a cop out, meant to avoid the real work of leadership.

I *think* it's 'github copilot chat' - I can see the little github frog icon turn to a spinner as I type and then back to frog.
Then when I hit save it goes spinny and never goes back to frog. I disabled + re-enabled it, but that restarts the extension host, and solves the problem temporarily

Legend has it this is Netflix (or at least used to be). They solved the problem by giving raises whenever someone got a better outside offer *and* they wanted to retain that person. Then everyone else at the same level got a raise, just like that.

Software design principle: difference should signal meaning. If the parameters to many functions go "x, y, z", then if I have a function with "z, x, y", there better be something special about that function. If there isn't, shuffle the parameters to match the canonical order. #TidyFirst

The problem with this oft-stated rationale is that estimates in no way tell you the cost of building something (or ROI or profitability). The only way to determine that is to build. Increase profitability by building in tiny increments, releasing, and seeing if somebody will buy what you're building.

Continuous ”re-forcasting” (or re-estimation) is rework waste (muda). It’s very expensive—a 3x hit. You waste time on the initial incorrect estimate, then waste time on the re-estimate (which is, most likely, also incorrect) and then waste time on the opportunity cost (things that you could have been doing other than creating incorrect estimates). And “progress” towards what, exactly. We learn as we work by getting feedback after every tiny release. Ignore that feedback at your peril. There is no benefit in defining success as ”progress” towards a goal set before you got that feedback. Same with “on time.” Creating something nobody wants “on time” (and “within budget”) benefits nobody.

The video ended up so long because it is... comprehensive: we start with empty file and end up with a GPT-2 (124M) model:
- first we build the GPT-2 network
- then we optimize it to train very fast
- then we set up the training run optimization and hyperparameters by referencing GPT-2 and GPT-3 papers
- then we bring up model evaluation, and
- then cross our fingers and go to sleep.
In the morning we look through the results and enjoy amusing model generations. Our "overnight" run even gets very close to the GPT-3 (124M) model. This video builds on the Zero To Hero series and at times references previous videos. You could also see this video as building my nanoGPT repo, which by the end is about 90% similar.

Honestly. The Agile methods can be boiled down to this:
1. Work in short cycles.
2. Measure what happens.
3. Adapt.
If you don't find story points helpful, don't use story points.
If daily scrums are getting in the way, don't do daily scrums.
If the cycle is too long, shorten the cycle.
If the cycle is too short, lengthen the cycle.
Amplify the things that work.
Change the things that don't.
And, for God's sake, stop all the bellyaching.

I'm not a big defender of Scrum. I much prefer the Extreme Programming version of Agile. However, I find the recent attacks on Scrum to be baseless and absurd. The fact that some organizations bastardize the technique for their own ends, and the fact that some project managers usurp and misuse the notion of the scrum master, is not a reason to indict Scrum itself.
In my opinion Scrum lacks the engineering discipline of XP, but is otherwise a competent technique for helping teams manage their progress in a complex software environment.
