I think the dev teams were much smaller then and they could turn around games faster, so cheaper to develop for, but you had a smaller pool of gamers to buy the game compared to now.
I think you're right though, they probably make up some of the difference with DLC, Season Passes, skins, etc.. Its definitely a different world.

This is not an answer to your question, and this is coming from a normie and not someone technical, but if they are in the US I would recommend they stay away from lightning until they understand how on chain stuff works, and then have them watch several hours of tutorials on lightning.
IMO lightning has been upended in the US. Before I would say fire up Wallet of Satoshi, once you get a feel for that and are adventurous try Phoenix, and from there they are more adventurous than me and should try their hands at managing their own channels, but that whole learning curve has been nuked.
I dunno, if they want to KYC themselves, Strike works well.

Still playing around with Ditto, Soapboxes take on Nostr (for lack of a better term).
In the Fediverse, you have home, local, and global feeds. Ditto uses your NIP-05 identifier to essentially create a local feed in Nostr. Does any other client do this? It makes perfect sense.

I've done a 180 that in the past couple years. While I still think IP is mostly nonsense, I think all the arguements against piracy that were made during the Napster era came true.
For me, the pro-piracy argument that was made back then definitely played out - I'd pirate an album or two end then up buying the rest of a bands stuff. I would have never known of them if I didnt pirate, so they made out on the deal, but I think most people just downloaded everything.
