What is considered best practice when selecting relays these days?
I must admit that I've only ever used free relays, which I chose from browsing nostr.watch
I don't see many bots (presumably Primal and Amethyst are filtering out the noise).
I feel like this approach has served me well but no doubt it can be optimised.
Appreciate any suggestions (paid relays included).

Thanks for the guide and recent updates.
In my opinion there are some differences worth understanding such as allowances for inbound (if you are expecting to receive a lot of payments), how the LSP thinks about eventual channel closes, new improvements such as channel splicing etc.
This information can make a material difference to the user experience and appreciation of why they are being charged for certain events, especially for non-technical users coming from custodial wallets.

I feel your frustration there. This is not well explained by any of the wallets yet, either in documentation or through the user journey on the apps (in my opinion)
Conceptually, the beads on the abacus metaphor was most helpful for me initially.
When you open a channel (i.e. fund your wallet), all the beads are on your side.
Someone sends you a payment, if there are no beads on their side the LSP opens a channel to you on your behalf on the fly. This hits the chain therefore result in mining fee.

These days there are some great self-custodial Bitcoin Lightning wallets to choose from. Some even integrate an LSP so you don't have to manage your own channel liquidity.
Here is a simplified overview of the major players and how their fee arrangements differ.

As Bitcoin on-chain fees rise, you should have a basic understanding of where LSP costs are incurred so you can plan accordingly.
For example, funding your wallet will allow you to send, but if you are receiving lightning payments you will require inbound liquidity.
If you want to receive a payment on a new wallet, an on-chain transaction may be required on behalf of the user by the LSP in order to provide the necessary capacity.
In high Bitcoin fee environments this can sometimes result in unforeseen transaction fees. Be aware.
The devs are working hard and shipping improvements and new features all the time.
As these products develop I'll attempt to publish any relevant updates.

Thanks for the response guys. I think the 40k threw me since that's quite high even in the elevated fee environment we have now.
Appreciate it's early days and that things will change, but it would be helpful to have all the different LN/on-chain fee mechanisms in your docs somewhere.

I've seen you mentioned on Twitter that there is a 40,000 sat fee for opening a channel, however I've just opened one myself and appear to have only been charged the mining fee (not complaining)
Could you also confirm if there is a fixed allowance for inbound liquidity, or what factors this depends on?

If we take whirlpool as an example, you are effectively doing both at the same time. You select a number of UTXO inputs to coinjoin,selectt pool size which represents the size of each UTXO output. In general you want to batch into material amounts to minimize coinjoin and miner fees.
