In Costa Rica it's baked in. Designs are made for builds and engineers get a % of official quoted cost when applying for a permit to build. The property owner is trying to understand the cost of a build by negotiating with an engineer who is incentivises to maximise the cost. It's fucking stupid right now. Example: have a friend who just built a house and they're friend did the costing honestly. The actual build has come out at around 950usd/sqm. If you go and get quotes from building companies right now, the range of quotes for the same thing is 1300 to 2500. Obviously, market forces kick in due to the moral corruption of malincentives and I know of people who're just delaying until it comes back down. It's driven by lots of foreign money coming in and probably a lot of money laundering. Fascinating to watch but very frustrating. The worst thing is, there's a luxury property tax and it's based on that registered figure so you could suck it up, accept the grift and just say yes but then you get a nice tax on top. The past few weeks have been pretty hard with all the trifling shenanigans. It seems like the devil has hands for me to catch sometimes.
Yet also, people have been crawling out of the woodwork to help me, help my puppy, help make my dreams for my community group into reality.
On top of that there is just the delightful character of this region. When I said I wanted to go back home, it was this type of culture and community. Joking and laughing with strangers in line at the grocery store. Random people giving me high fives in parking lots.
Someone slipped this note into my purse while I was out one day. (Yes my opsec is terrible and apparently my bag often just gapes open in crowded public places. It's fine for now 😅)
I feel so blessed and loved and lucky to be here where I can feel so connected to the people around me 🥰🙌🥰
