Based on what my relatives have been telling me back in Egypt, this is a spot on assessment of what's been going on.
Another example:
A big reason for the insane traffic in Cairo and Alexandria is that their transit systems are nowhere near extensive enough for the population size.
With all the money being spent building new cities from scratch, some of that must be spent to vastly expand metro systems in both.
To put it into context: Cairo metropolitan area and NYC metropolitan area have about the same population size of about 22 million.
NYC metro area has:
- Largest subway system in the world with 472 stations and 36 lines.
- LIRR commuter rail to the Long Island suburbs with 11 lines and 126 stations
- Metro North commuter rail with 5 lines and 124 stations
- NJ Transit commuter rail with 12 lines and 165 stations
Cairo metropolitan area has:
- Cairo Metro with 3 lines and 84 stations
…you can see where the traffic comes from

My 8Gb RAM rp4 with a 2T ssd is serving a bitcoin node, a monero node among other things. Also access to it via VPN and tor from anywhere (only the btc node so far). True you have to spend a bit polishing it but has been running since last October. And the OS is not even the fastest but solid rock (OpenBSD)

And before anyone asks, the obvious solution to this is using Nostr to decide who gets a Nostr grant. You don't need backroom interviews and groveling supplicants to decide how to spend money to promote an open communications protocol.
Use the protocol.
People should just write up an explanation of their stuff in a long-form note and link to it from a Grant Application wiki table. And then we can all watch the process go down, read through the results and explanation of why each application was accepted or rejected, and add congratulatory zaps to the winners and condolence zaps to the losers.
And add a handicap score to the applications, to make it a fairer game.
The losers are automatically entered into the next round, unless they withdraw, and have a chance to better their application beforehand.
Making it public involves some extra dev work and docs to make it pretty and minimally acceptable 🤭
