The height of the land shows how many years each place has spent under Mongol rule so far; land that was lost stays on the map in grey. The population figure is an estimate of how many people lived in the territory held at the time.

After 1370 it follows their direct successors: the Golden Horde until 1502, its rule over the Rus' until 1480, the khans of Chagatai's line until 1680 and the Mongol khans in Mongolia until the Qing conquest (1635 and 1691). Khanates founded later by Genghis Khan's descendants, such as Kazan, Crimea or the Kazakh Khanate, and Timur's empire are not counted. From 1691 to 1911 no Mongol state appears on the map; from 1911 it shows independent Mongolia. The brief Chinese occupation of 1919-21 is not shown. Vassal states that kept their own rulers are shown only where the border data counts them as part of the empire. Short conquests (held less than 15 years in total), such as Hungary in 1241-42 and Syria in 1260, appear while they last and leave no grey trace.
