The dangers of leverage, $NAKA edition:
The company has $210M in debt to Kraken paying 8% APR backed by most of their Bitcoin stash, or 4405 BTC. This loan is due in December and as BTC price lowers, their Loan-to-Value ratio gets worse and worse.
At $63,500, they're at 75% LTV
At $59,600, they're at 80% LTV
At $56,000, they're at 85% LTV
They have a little bit of dry powder left, about 650 BTC that are not pledged to the loan, but they need it to service the 8% interest and the shortfall between revenue and expenditures (particularly executive salaries). Historically, they've tried to hover around 70% LTV, suggesting that the liquidation price isn't too far away from that.
So to sum up, there are many ways for this to go wrong:
1. Bitcoin drops enough where they get liquidated ($50k would certainly do it, probably something higher would also do it)
2. BItcoin stays down until December and they can't roll over the loan.
3. Bitcoin stays down until December and they roll over the loan on punitive terms that reduces their stack quicker than they are now. They would likely have to sell some Bitcoin because they're not getting $210M in loans in this scenario.
There's really only one way for things to go right:
Bitcoin price goes up massively by December.
Even then, the interest payments and operations expenses will likely destroy a ton of value.
The lesson here isn't to dunk on the company. It's just showing you how fragile leveraged positions are. You can have the world's most pristine asset and still lose if the market moves against you.
Around my eighth year in bitcoin the price was horrible and I was feeling the emotions and pressure very strongly.
I told myself “you said you’d Hodl for 10 years when you first bought bitcoin and it hasn’t been 10 years yet”
So I had to Hodl for at least another two years.
When the 10 year mark came I reassessed and told myself I’d be holding for another 10 years.
That was 2 years ago.
So still 8 more years to go before I reassess again.
These little mind hacks work extraordinarily well.
I recommend employing them to counteract your emotions.

It always amazes me how an insignificantly small number of bitcoiners who don't mine or contribute in any materially meaningful way still think they are the main characters.
They tend to see bitcoin as some sort of prophetic cause, the apotheosis of which is that the bankers will be vanquished and the food will be fixed and everyone gets a puppy and half a cow.
You guys realize this is just a LARP right? It's a richly fleshed-out fantasy world built on crusty libertarian/ancap/agorist/Austrian ideas that never penetrate into real life.
I think that's important to realize, because some of you are making life decisions around what is effectively a game of pretend. You're moving to literal dangerous places of the world. You're sinking irresponsible amounts of personal capital and credit into a computer science experiment that may not shake out.
The fear is palpable among the many who still price their lives in dollars or other fiat currencies.
Few understand that Bitcoin is the only Denominator that matters.

We've been saying Nostr needs better onboarding and discovery for years. Agreed. But let's talk specifics.
Apps need three things to work as social platforms:
Sign-in. Search. Tag.
If you can't nail these three fundamentals, nothing else matters. Users bounce before they ever see what makes Nostr special. It's standard for mainstream adoption.
Once those are locked down, the next battle is battery and bandwidth. Using Nostr shouldn't drain my phone dead or eat through my data plan. This is not a nice to have feature. It's time.

I'm still in a lot of pain and super stiff. The painkillers they gave me make me feel crazy brained and don't mask the pain completely so it's just that I can't work or do useful things well but still feel poorly.
I am deeply resentful that I am experiencing all these consequences and the driver was just allowed to drive off with no charges.
I filed claims with my insurance and retained a lawyer. I don't love the idea of suing a 90 year old woman but those are the only consequences she's going to see for driving into a pedestrian farmer's market.
This shouldn't be on me, the authorities should handle this type of thing. But soon I'm going to be painted as the bad guy because I didn't let it slide because "oh she's old what can ya do".
If the entire global economy runs on “credit money” (money that is lent into existence) and the entire parasitic structure of debasement faced a margin call through Bitcoin in self-custody, then wouldn’t “digital credit” face that same margin call if Bitcoin remained decentralized and secure?

Posting this at midnight, need to get to bed! I got the pond job but we’re calling it a fountain now. I don’t have to pull a permit for this so we’ll just build it.
Made a template today (in my garage!) because the homeowner wants to see a full sized version of it in the space before we start digging, setting rebar, and pouring concrete. Pictures and drawings are not enough for them to final approve the shape and size.
Tomorrow morning I’ll set it up in the space and finalize everything. (Hopefully)

ai coding killing the joy of coding is a real concern of mine. you have to use ai to be competitive productivity wise, yet this makes the act of building software less fun for people who actually enjoy writing code. For these people it’s just not as fun to build software anymore.
So is it really more productive if you start to slow down and get less motivated on cool projects?
A big motivation for me was the challenge of tackling a new engineering problem that hasn’t been solved yet: nostrdb for example. I don’t think i could have vibed nostrdb and had it turned out with the same quality.
maybe i shouldn’t give up on human coding for the initial innovation/engineering work 🤔

Nostr is dead.
Well, not quite dead. Not dead dead. But dead-ish. We've been here before. Maybe not as bad as this. Maybe a third-step-cousin-in-law kind of close. Last summer. And possibly the summer before that.
But at other times nostr has not been dead. Maybe not fully alive. Definitely not alive alive. Alive alive was Dec 2022-April 2023. Once in a generation kind of alive. The kind of alive that makes it worth being alive. But no, that was it. That was the one time.
But the rest of the time, other than now and last summer and the summer before, it has been not dead. Because every time you think it's dead, you hear the tiny ping of a zap from six feet under. And cadavers don't zap. They don't post memes and they don't fight vigorously out in the open about topics very few people want to understand, let alone care about, and they don't do other stuff. Like music. And film. And believe it or not, books too. And they don't zap. I said that already but it's worth repeating.
So, what's the point of all this? There is none. Other than nostr is dead. And that's okay.
Had a long conversation with @nprofile…fg8w this morning. At one point he asked me: given the stagnant user numbers and such weird vibes on Nostr lately, what do we actually have going for us?
I think what we have is extremely valuable and hard to reproduce:
1. A protocol that actually enables a self-sovereign Internet
2. A permissionless network of 1000+ active relays
3. An ecosystem of 100s of projects building on Nostr
4. A core set of ride or die users who hold their keys and are not going anywhere
Seems like a solid foundation to build on.
All you have to do is hold Bitcoin for 4 years.
