Okay yea I'm remembering that. It was about file storage and image hosting and the homeless guy's filmmaking!
Yes, we want to DELETE the barrier to entry. anyone on Earth should be able to have performant, persistent, secure, private, always-on, networked, censorship-impossible, server-like personal compute infrastructure whether they want to use it merely for a diary, for organizing communities of any size, or for building a new globe-spanning media empire.
We don't use WASM, we use an entirely new computational model called PLAN and a new Lispy/Haskelly functional language called Sire. The core of our system is an SSI (solid state Interpreter), Kinode's is not. (We'll have a blog post with a frendlier definition of the SSI soon, but for now there is this whitepaper that introduced this concept to the world: https://media.urbit.org/whitepaper.pdf . Disclaimer though that we are not building on Urbit, it's just that the SSI is a general concept.)
We've got some explanation of PLAN here: https://vaporware.gitbook.io/vaporware/overview/overview#persistence-plan
Kinode's identity/networking layer requires blockhain integration. Our networking and identity are optional, freely-chosen by the user, and compatible with standard, blockchain-less cryptographic keypairs very much like Nostr. In fact, you'll be able to use your Nostr keys as identy in our system!
Nah, it was servers. I was saying I couldn't think of a non-violent or even feasible way to have "sovereign" servers. But now I'm thinking it's all relative and you lowering the barrier to entry does help individuals gain some sovereign authority in the server universe
I remember you telling me to kill the president, but I think that was about something other than servers...

What’s the difference between Kinode and Vaporware (is that the name of your company?) then? Both use wasm to containerize the apps right?
I'm usually pretty good at memorizing every nevent id I publish just in case but that one is slipping the mind I must admit
It was the one where I kept going "I double dog dare you to kill the president or ur server isn't sovereign"
Oh no I don't remember that argument. The server space being sovereign (or not). Got a note link?
A good mental model to have is AWS Lambda or other "serverless" cloud functions - you don't have to worry about the setup and security of the host server itself because it isn't the server itself you care about, it's the result of a particular run of code or data access that you're concerned with. The hardware is slightly abstracted away.
The short answer for both of you for the moment: most security risks are about unwanted access or OS vulnerabilities.
For the latter, the flippant answer is "our OS will just not have vulnerabilities". That sounds like a bullshit answer, but our entire stack from the kernel to userspace has a very contained footprint, no dependencies on external code or libraries, our compiler binaries are human readable so nowhere for exploits to hide, and the privileges/access of any additional applications you install will be transparent to the OS and auditable by you. When you have typed, pure functional programming up and down the whole stack, deterministic guarantees like that are feasible.
Re: unwanted access: Our OS should be thought of like a VM. So either a slightly technical person takes the most rudimentary steps to insure a host machine they fully control has access control handled (this isn't that hard. SSH settings + firewall); or a totally non-technical person has a hosting provider (or friend or family member!) handle that detail for them on mamaged hardware.
Kind of vague response for now, but as the weeks and months roll on we'll have more authoritative technical documentation to link to in place of my blathering.
For example when we argued about whether server space is sovereign property, I wasn't thinking about you being laser focused on making server operation itself unstoppably easy
You should repost this note, really makes your whole deal more understandable

What’s color stain did you use?
I also want to know because it’s not just about having your server not work. It’s also about security/safety and ways you can compromise yourself by accident
I tend to agree with you. People need to take back the control of their data and run their own servers. But how does a laymen manage security risks on their server without a basic understanding?
How would this work in vaporware?
You are correct, there is no need for a blockhain. (Unless you want consensus + global state; but it is self-evident to me that you do NOT want global consensus on trust and reputation. Last place you'd want that!)
I have an extreme position here because this is the backbone of my company: "running a personal server" should require zero sysadmin or any other technical skills at all.
If you can click a button, you can have an always-on, always-connectable machine that requires no maintenance and allows you to install server software just as easily.
Yeah i keep hearing about blockchain solutions for knowledge graph to mantain and verify when and who made edits. Giving an honest attempt to understand, I haven't been able to understand why blockchain would be needed.
80% iq and whatnat i guess 😂💁
if it doesn't resonate or can't be explained to me as simply as that first nostr doc announcing the functionality - i'm not going to have the motivation to be diving into it until i get that spark.
It makes sense that the barrier to running a node would be kind of high. If you’re going to have complexity anywhere, put it there. iirc, one of the guys working on Matrix said that most people should not run servers, period. There’s so many things that can go wrong, that it is arguably irresponsible to enable “lay people” to run one when they won’t know how to fix it when it goes bad.
For people that do understand sysadmin, even most of them don’t run servers just from the amount of maintenance they require.
I tried out FC for a while. It has potential, but there are a ton of issues with it (at least for me) that Nostr has superior answers to.
The biggest one of all is the difficulty in running a node - which is sort of par for the course in ethereum/altcoin world I suppose.
After a day or two on Nostr I stood up a personal relay in minutes. And now I'm self-hosting a client. And starting to build a new relay from scratch as weekend project. You can't compare to that level of openness and low barrier to decentralization.
Fucking shittok.

"Nostr is lacking in content and I believe this could be the primary reason people are not sticking around after trying it."- @Karnage
As a content creator I find Nostr incredibly exciting. This, I believe, is because I find the concept of flash payments incredibly lucrative and a vehicle for fair value exchange of art and written content.
I'm an artist foremost and I draw an enormous amount of satisfaction from simply writing. After several years writing to the void I also like to present it to the world. It would be awesome to entertain other folks and it doesn't get much better than if I can be compensated while doing it. In today's internet I have 3 vectors of approach to get "compensated" for my writing:
1. Write on Medium. I have to pay $5/month to be a member for privilege of "maybe" making money... You can only make money if another member reads your writing. The majority of other members are writers... So naturally, the best performing content is pieces about writing or how to make money on writing. Its ridiculous.
2. Start a substack or subscription service. Again, I have to pay the provider some fee for the "opportunity" to get a newsletter in front of people. I still have to work my own traffic to it. Then, I have to expect people to fork over $5 or $10 to me for my exclusive writing. Not the best vehicle for value exchange because I could just be a shit bag for a few months and you might just forget that you've been paying me!
3. Start my own blog... Not a good option. I have to pay for the domain, pay for a web hosting site like WordPress, then spend more time promoting the website than actually writing. Brand new visitors don't want to spend money right away so I have to find a clever way to sell something like come up with a line of merch. This doesn't sound like writing, its running a business.
And that's just it. Writers, painters, film-makers, most artists of any kind want to make art not necessarily run a business. So if I manage to make someone smile or laugh or fall into a deep thought from something I wrote and they feel like that was worth a couple hundred sats that's fine with me. I'll do my job of growing my network and if I can do that at scale, now I have an opportunity to make decent money and no one is paying an exorbitant fee to consume it. Best of all artists are forced to make content about how to make money as artists to make money. It just sounds so dumb saying it but that is the state of the other platforms right now.
Subjective, transitive trust graphs + modular/modularizable, forkable articles = the raw materials to properly rebuild the scientific publishing world.
There are blockchain solutions too, but I prefer the subjective reputation route for reasons that becomes obvious if you think about it for a moment.
Happy Friday Nostr, enjoy your weekend!
Obvious reasons.
someone has to do the discovery work. Either the fund does it (finds devs) or the developers do it (applies to the fund). There has to be a selection process somewhere. So either the devs can self-select or the fund can go searching through all Nostr projects on earth.
So it's about incentives. The fund isn't going to spend extra energy to ALSO give away money. Theyre already "spending" a ton. So the developers are incentivized to surface themselves up; to "spend" comparatively little (time) to make themselves known and potentially gain a lot.
The filtering and selection has to happen somewhere. "hey developer who wants free money, make yourself known to me by writing a little bit on this public form and I'll read all the submissions" is far lower friction and cheaper than "okay let me scour the whole fucking internet to find a place to lose a bunch of cash."
Modular articles allow you to work with the purest form of a "concept" as defined by the author domain/global.
it gives you the coordinates to the raw materials that compose a full text. Now it is up to you to identify the most meaningful bits as defined by you, and sit there for a bit.
Thinking about it more, laeserin was getting at a better explanation from the start
It's about bias
If forms are the system, it's biased in favor of devs who will fill out forms
Those are devs who have time to check if the form seems worth filling out, devs who feel comfy giving the form whatever info it asks for
I think if you're trying to bias your pool of devs in favor of the best ones you probably don't want to filter out the ones you're filtering out there
Why do you want a system biased in favor of devs who have time and trust these forms?
Can you just plainly, simply explain why filling out a form is the lynchpin for you to whether or not the receipt of money is either okay or not okay?
Lolol why not have 1000 scripts running on each phone. Supercharge that business model!
Just used chalk to draw a flagstone design on some stained concrete and carved it up freestyle with my grinder. Pretty. If anyone has some ugly plain concrete they want piratized, holler at me. If it's worth the trip, I'll do it.

You are the orange bitcoin sign and you have to move left and right to eat all the fiat symbols.
how do you like it?
is somebody up for making a better one?
I just recognize when it's necessary to cathedral rather than to bazaar.
In early days when protocols and clients are emerging and being defined, you want focused consolidation of power. Imagine if fiatjaf had to write the original Nostr spec in collaboration with 25 other people, with every major choice going through a "decision making process"?
You open the bazaar later once certain core components are essentially frozen and immune.
I imagine their access to high-intensity experiences and sort of cathartic group activities was severely restricted compared to today.
You can hear amplified music whenever you want, cranked as loud as you want. Go to a packed football stadium or rave or drive a fast car.
These dudes were slowly strolling around in powered wigs and apparently everything was sepia colored and silent. Aside from signing up for a naval battle, the most intense experience you could get was going to a concert hall and having a stage full of strings blasted at your face.
I guarantee you those Victorians were moshing. At least in spirit.
You just want to do business with jack I think 🫵
I'm not. She's making suggestions that add absurd amounts of overhead, communal decision-making and arbitrary inclusion. Looks like a recipe for a zoo of spam, low-quality projects, disinterested project leaders (they didn't even want to fill out a form?), arguments over moderation, and ultimately will _lead_ to a bureaucratic nightmare of upkeep just to keep a weak pulse.
I'm more in favor of few, focused, motivated parties making high-quality decisions with more authority over the resources they command. Fewer, authoritative, sovereign CEOs. Not a committee.
More like how we got Bitcoin, less like how governments run.
Man, when they all start going wild and everyone is jamming those bows real hard...
I think classical music players are metal heads and they don't even know it. Sometimes when I'm at a metal concert I think "is this intense, primal feeling I'm experiencing right now identical to the one people were having in the 1700s sitting in classical music halls?" and it blows my mind.
Listening right now with quality headphones. Will report back.
Overall some of the worst ideas I can imagine.
"There are countless reasons a developer might not apply for a grant - they may not want a grant, or be too busy, or not interested in the commitment - so others should apply for them. But also there shouldn't be an application process.
And applications never close, they just endlessly pile up into future rounds.
Also the decision process is going to be more granular and documented, so the amount of admin work for each larger and larger round also gets larger.
And that decision process will be very objective and out in the open, but also "people who spam the process" will be blocked, and it'll be entirely clear who is "spamming" and who is just "really eager to nominate 10 developers a day who didn't actually ask for grants to begin with".
Wtf

Thanks to the friendly npubs who helped test.
Zeus wallet @nprofile…ctjf is working but it's kinda overkill and weird UX simply for receiving zaps on Nostr; and there's no NWC yet (https://github.com/ZeusLN/zeus/issues/2180) so sending is even higher friction.
I should have led with: it's a very impressive non-custodial LN mobile wallet/node! But its not the right choice for Nostr yet. I'll leave my sats in it for now and hope they add more Nostr integrations soon!

I missed a detail in your comment:
> The mint is running on a server, but it's not accessible via IP.
> You communicate with the mint using its npubs **via nostr relays**.
You're saying messages intended for the mint are stored on proxies, and the mint will ask the proxies for said messages. The messages don't ever go directly from users to the mint.
Okay yea that makes sense.
Exactly, that's what a #nostr relay is for.
And the spirit of the OP (cc. @nprofile…f2j4) is about communicating using a relay knowing just the npub, without needing a direct connection.

Sure, if two parties rely on a third party to act as a sort of proxy to hold messages for them, then both parties can just connect to the proxy.
That is a form of "communication", but it's indirect. I was talking about making direct connections, because that seemed to be the spirit of the OP

Of course you can communicate with a server without having it's address!
In the same way that I'm communicating with you without knowing your address: using a #nostr relay to deposit and get the notes.
You can't communicate with a server without having its address.
You might be able to discover the address via another route that isn't traditional DNS (pigeon comes to mind. Or Nostr), but you ultimately need the IP to connect to it.
The truth behind the Julian Assange plea deal:
Wikileaks agreed to delete 20,000 DNC emails from their website, to get Assange free.
Turns out it has nothing to do with supposed “national security”, but is really about hiding the crimes of Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party insiders. And all the non-partisan stuff on the US government in general (or Bush administration) remained.

I hate to be the pain in the ass who makes this pedantic point because I generally want the things being said here, but:
That IS a "cloud".
A network of remote devices, the vast majority of which are not yours, that provide compute and data for each other or for edge devices. That's a cloud.
The term "cloud" has unfortunately become synonymous with "centralized MEGACORP spying servers", but it could just as fairly be applied to a dark net of voluntary peer-to-peer nodes.
My point being: let's recapture the "cloud" and celebrate it, rather than tie our hands behind our backs trying to avoid "other people's computers". Relays are other people's computers. This is good.

I've enjoyed watching him stream and joining in the conversation. Not because either of us is getting rich.
Someone asked me via DM if I'm streaming for free on zapstream because it's not sustainable ("people aren't zapping enough"). No, I'm not. I'm just another Nostrich and I'm paying just like everyone else and I do it for the growth of zapstream and to throw content on the site so that it becomes more discoverable.
In other words I do it for fun, to meet people, connect with others, chat and to play games together. If you're streaming on zapstream purely to make money then you probably have to come up with a concept, another Bitcoin podcast or bring your community with you from other sites. Or, stream for fun like I do it.
We're very early with nostr and it's not all about the money. It's about contributing to something that might make you money in the future. Or maybe it wont. In short, if you think that streaming on nostr isn't sustainable, don't.
Do you keep a record of how often micro predictions you've made have turned out to be correct vs how often you're just reacting to stuff and saying "I said this before and it was close, but now it's looking like something else"?
While we're here... People are using nostr torrent kind notes simply to post the link to a torrent, right? They're not hosting the torrent file nor the source content on relays themselves? (If not, not not 😏)

The price action on Bitcoin is still slow- choppy and slow bleeding. Yesterday I mentioned that $62k was resistance and this was the case on multiple re-tests yesterday. Now BTC is looking weak above $61k too. I cannot ignore the big liquidity still under $60k, it is very likely to be tested even if we do not make new lows.
Maybe a liquidate late longs and pump scenario. We have US GDP today so there is a chance of volatility from this. We have limit orders in place and I will be ready to react to whichever way the price breaks.

Lovers of #amethyst, what client do you use on desktop? I mostly use Gossip, which I like a lot but is missing a few things. And I keep bouncing around between a few different web clients (primal, nostrudel, coracle, etc) but none of them quite do it for me.
sadly, #zaps are few and far between
I prefer Nostr, but there are ethereum based decentralized social networks that do this.
Farcaster and Lens, for instance.
Nostr and zaps give artists a social network with instant access to reach anyone globally with their content, and for anyone globally to instantly tip them with real money. No other social network in the world does this.
Another pro: you can de-google by installing GrapheneOS on it

There are so many ways we could make educational, professional, and even political opportunities available to more people. Not taking privilege from those who have it, simply making more people privileged.
Instead of everything in the world turning into a tug-of-war where both sides pull as hard as they can in opposite directions, it’d be awfully nice for people to decide to take a stroll in the same general direction for once.
And simply put, if you’ve found someone you have absolutely no common ground with, it probably means you were listening badly.

In my latest piece for Forbes Crypto, I highlight the whirlwind of events following the controversial finance bill, the protests and its success, the resilience of the youth and their view of Bitcoin's role in Kenya's future 🇰🇪 ❤️
Noelyne Sumba, a stellar Kenyan Bitcoiner and Machakura team member, put it best, "Many young Kenyans see Bitcoin as a way to escape the restrictive monetary policies imposed by international financial institutions, which have contributed to the country's economic challenges. Integrating Bitcoin into the financial system could reduce reliance on foreign debt and offer a way out from oppressive government policies that hinder economic and individual growth."
Very proud of—and inspired by—the resilience shown by fellow Kenyan Bitcoiners and the youth on the ground in fighting against this bill and winning.
Here's to amplifying the voices of those we've lost over the last week and those who continue to fight 🕊

I agree. BUT: in working in trustless/decentralized circles I've found myself in some of the highest-trust, most competent and noticed communities where shit really takes off. Like, travel around the world to meet up and cofound successful companies together, based on our extreme trust in one another.
So as a rule of thumb: don't trust, verify. But once you've verified enough and determined someone is actually trustworthy, TRUST HARD and do amazing shit together.

#HOWDONOSTR - How do I use Nostr?
Nostr is much, much more than a Twitter alternative. Nostr allows us to have portal digital social identities that we can use in various applications and capacities. For this next iteration of #HOWDONOSTR I'll focus on a few of the applications that I use and the various ways that I use Nostr.
Since we know that Nostr uses a public and private key pair and keeping our private key safe is of utmost importance, we'll start this off with the basics and then move on to relays, before discussing applications.
* On my desktop, to login to and utilize the various applications, I'll use the Alby web browser extension to manage my private key. This works with Chrome, Brave, Firefox, etc. You can install it here: https://getalby.com
* On my Android phone, I'll use the Amber application to keep my private key safe when using native applications that support it. You can download Amber here: https://github.com/greenart7c3/Amber
* I'll also use the Kiwi web browser for accessing many web applications. With the Kiwi browser, I'll use the Nostr Connect extension because it's more lightweight than Alby. You can download Kiwi Browser for Android here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kiwibrowser.browser
You can install the extension here: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/nostr-connect/ampjiinddmggbhpebhaegmjkbbeofoaj
Nostr allows us to be in-charge of our digital social identity and allows us to be in-charge of our entire social graph. We can accomplish this by running our own relay. I do this in two parts.
* I run a private local relay on my Android phone. This allows me to easily write offline notes and save all of my drafts to my phone where they are not accessible by anyone but myself. I do this with the Citrine application. You can download it here: https://github.com/greenart7c3/Citrine
* I also run a publicly accessible relay that only my wife and myself and have write access. That means that no one else can save their social information to my relay, but everyone in the world can access my relay to read our notes and events. I use the Nostream relay for this. You can get started with Nostream here: https://github.com/cameri/nostream
Do I need to run two relays? Maybe not, but I do, because I can. Nostr allows me to easily do these more technical things if I want to do them, allowing me to be fully in control of my entire social graph and social identity.
Now that I have my private key being secured and managed and my notes and events are stored on my personal relays, I'm ready to start using various Nostr applications!
My number one daily driver is Amethyst for Android. It allows me to login via Amber to keep my private key safe. It allows me to easily use my private relay that runs on my smartphone. I use Amethyst because of the number of features that it supports, integrating with many other Nostr clients and various aspects of the protocol. From AI generated feeds of notes, to a bitcoin powered marketplace, to live streams and more. However, Amethyst does suffer from some stability issues and causes me headaches from time to time. Because of this, I also use Primal. Primal is smooth and stable. It lacks some of the extras that Amethyst has, but if I want an experience that just works, I choose Primal.
Nostr really shines on the web. Most of Nostr's Other Stuff clients are not native applications for Android and iOS, they're web applications - regular websites powered by Nostr. Remember, to securely use these applications, you'll need one of the web browsers and extensions that I mentioned above. Alternatively, you can also use many of these with nsec.app. This website runs a Nostr nsecBunker in your web browser, allowing this application to function as a secure key management application.
* Snort.social or Iris.to are popular clients, but not performing for me as well as they used to, so now I'm using Primal.net and Coracle.social more and more. Primal is very stable and simple, but Coracle is loaded with features that keep bringing me back. Coracle's new custom feeds feature is a game changer, however the UI is a bit much and may seem overly complicated.
* For audio chats, I listen to NostrNests.com where people chat with friends and Plebchain Radio hosts their weekly podcast. I used to do weekly shows here every Monday, but it's been a while for me.
* Zap.stream is a Twitch or YouTube alternative for video consumption. Here, I watch friends and streamers here, interacting with them live, chatting, zapping, and consuming all that they have to offer. Sometimes it's weekly podcast shows, sometimes it's gamers playing video games, or sometimes it's just developers hacking away at code during a live coding session.
* I use Highlighter.com for reading long form notes or blog posts, but I also use Highlighter for sometimes writing my own. Content creators can also use Highlighter to create subscription tiers, similar to Patreon. I don't use that feature, but it's nice to have for those looking to fund their content in other ways similar to what exists elsewhere on the web.
* I use listr.lol to manage my Nostr lists, to help me organize npubs that I follow.
* I use metadata.nostr.com to restore my Nostr profile, including my contact list, if a rogue client accidentally deletes or alters my contact list in a way that I didn't intend. This does happen from time to time. We're early.
* I use w3.do to create Nostr powered shortlinks for sharing with others.
* I use Wavlake to listen to music, supporting artists in a value for value manner. I use this application on the web and I use this application on my Android phone too.
* I use Shopstr.store to sell items, such as old Android phones. I've sold 3 via this Nostr powered marketplace.
* Tunestr.io is a website similar to Zap.stream, but it's specifically for live musical performances.
* I use Zap.store to manage applications on my Android phone as an alternative to Google Play or Obtainium.
I use these applications the most, but many more applications exist across the Nostr ecosystem. I encourage you to check out https://www.nostrapps.com from time to time and see what's available.

Is there some trick to making grease guns usable? I had a shitty one, thought maybe spending more might help, now I have a battery powered one (fewer hand cramps at least) & still more grease goes around the fittings than in, & getting the hose to detatch is still nearly impossible.
Why the fuck isn't there just some sort of release collar?! Are there replacement hoses that have some sort of manual release?

GM Nostr!
I’m excited to share more about what I’m building and why. My project is Seer, a consumer-friendly, NIP-29 enabled application that's native to Apple platforms. Why Apple first? That's where my expertise lies. I believe the Nostr ecosystem needs more apps that are intuitive for newcomers while delivering exceptional performance and leveraging the latest platform features.
Seer will concentrate on NIP-29 relay-based group communications. I'm staying focused on making group interactions seamless and efficient, without trying to encompass all of Nostr's capabilities. This approach echoes what @npub1sg6…f63m pointed out a while back about the value of "micro apps" — tools that do one thing exceptionally well.
Additionally, Seer will be powered by my Swift Nostr libraries, Nostr and NostrClient. While there are some excellent options out there, I plan to develop and adapt these libraries specifically to fit Seer’s needs. This doesn't mean they can’t be used for other Nostr projects, but my primary goal is to ensure they serve Seer’s requirements optimally and conveniently.
I'm looking forward to bringing Seer into your hands and making Nostr even more accessible to everyone. Stay tuned!

Yes. But it's not specific to the DNC emails. "Delete everything" may be plausible deniability, but it's a bit disingenuous to make it sound as if he's been specifically directed to remove just the DNC emails.
> The judge said Assange was required to direct WikiLeaks to destroy material containing classified information, though given how long this case has gone on, such an action is likely to have minimal impact

It's legit.

BTC/LN/CASHU/NOSTR I actually understand and it has the least counterparty risk, IMHO.
I’ve always struggled with ETH/Smart Contracts. It’s more complicated.
Not saying that I’m right, I’m just choosing the simpler option to place my bets and narrow my focus.
Pears looks really interesting. What else are you doing with it at the moment?
I’m thinking of hosting as much as I can on PearDrive when it launches, but I can’t seem to find the DNC emails.
If anyone has a copy of the emails please let me know!
Do we have a full copy of everything on WikiLeaks on nostr already?

When I have a long day of yard work the same thing happens to me - some novel phrase or thought will pop up and then just be sort of repeating all day
Went for a run today, this phrase kept repeating in my thoughts:
Loose the grip of mind
Travel effortlessly
Through space and time
Would say the run went better than average, not entirely “effortless” though.
I more or less agree that protocols are almost always preferable to platforms. Why though do you consider BTC/LN (and even a sizeable network of Nostr relays...) to be protocols but ethereum and smart contracts to be a platform?
Aren't they both as viable to run independently ("speak the protocol"), but both are susceptible to counterparty risk (if the Bitcoin network does something retarded like ordinals, say. Yea you could go nuclear fork the "protocol" part, but you lose the network and therefore the "platform")?
To me, the degree to which users of a protocol actually end up functionally beholden to a particular network is the degree to which it is more of a platform. Nostr itself is perfectly permissionlessly protocol-y. More so than any dApp that ethereum has churned out. Relays begin to blur that line a liiiiittle but they're still on the right side of it in my mind.
hey bud. cant zap you for some reason ??

Good morning and pura vida, Nostr! It's time to create notes and send zaps! 🫂🤙🏻💜
Nostr is a portable digital identity. This is the way to on-board more users. This is how we get people to understand Nostr's power.
#nevent1q…0jhw
Okay, fair.
I see a lot of overlap between current cashu directions and NFTs. This idea, for instance:
#nevent1q…5n2c
There are "Token Bound Accounts" which are NFTs that are _also_ wallets. Meaning, you could build an NFT that was intended to be used as unique global "identity" (urbit.org does this, for instance), and that NFT could also permissionlessly receive and hold assets (including other NFTs).
The upshot is you could send arbitrary assets directly to someone's ID; which is exactly the (very exciting!) direction cashu+npubs is going.
I'll readily grant that Nostr keypairs have the advantage of being simple, free, blockchain-less and low-barrer-to-entry. And given relays and LN nodes and whatnot, there is still some counterparty risk with Nostr, but I think less than with ethereum and NFTs, on balance.
Okay that was long-winded but I suppose my point is: I prefer avoiding blockchains unless utterly necessary (like double spend) and prefer solutions with less counterparty risk, but there is also a lot the Nostr world can learn and improve upon from some of the better ideas that fell out of ethereum and NFTs.
They might have had the right idea, but bound to a platform. We now have it with protocols: btc/ln/cashu/nostr
Bith motive and the uses so far.
Could be a usefulness somewhere, someday.
You got a source for that? That's a suspicious looking screenshot
For one thing, ISPs aren't the only way to network. Mesh networks, for example, don't rely on ISPs.
Also, encrypted traffic solves a lot of that. If you connect, peer-to-peer, to a "discovery gateway" of sorts (maybe this is how mints are going to be structured, I'm not sure) and that gateway helps you connect p2p to other users, then all your ISP is seeing is encrypted packets between IP addresses. Even IP blacklists at the ISP level wouldn't be a silver bullet for them as gateways could move as necessary.
But if things are THAT bad, then yea mesh networks are the answer.
Example: nycmesh.net - they happen to also connect outside via ISP, but local-to-the-mesh traffic does not.
Normies very likely will never be sovereigns
Don't ethereum EOAs basically for the bill? A unique identity that is sovereign and can receive arbitrary digital assets.
What is it about NFTs that lead you to believe they are a scam? What they've been used for thus far (monkey pictures...), or the concept of a digital asset itself? Something else?
I've never been a fan of NFTs. I believe they are a scam.
I've also not been supportive of trying to ban ordinals on the chain.
I don't believe it's anyone's prerogative to determine how someone uses their Bitcoin.
Reading through Rothbard's "What Has Government Done to Our Money?" is firming my stance.
If we were on a gold standard again, would we ban jewelry or circuit boards?
A commodity can have a benefit as a medium of exchange and a benefit as a non-monetary good.
Let the market decide.
Self-sovereign identity (SSI) was a great idea, but a big piece was missing- the ability to natively accept payment. Now, with npubs, that is possible with #cashu and DMs.
Not sure what to call this yet, but it is some sort of socio-economic overlay network that sits on top of, but not dependent on DNS/IP.
What it's really all about:
https://image.nostr.build/c76371dceea4811d8a41ff28999d96a35d467f676b620eeb49e8a63bdc4d6652.jpg
say for example I am running a cashu mint from whatever location, I have a contract with my ISP providing me internet access so my cashu mint can be online/discoverable. this ISP has given me an IP address I can be reached at. if I think decide I will not advertise my IP, and only be discoverable through the mints npub, wouldn't all traffic still be going to and from the ISP anyways? meaning they can just have a look at the packets, see what's going on(roughly) and block access?
unruggable/sovereign addressability -- makes all the difference
doesn't it eventually boil down to packets being tramsitted over IP anyway though? I'm so confused 😂
as chain grows - it will much harder n unreliable in terms of keeping up with latest updates - much beyond normie skill or habit
real decentralize mean user(s) need run own shit in self-custody cannot piggyback on others
80% are laser eyed barkers not even running nodes. what do u expect.

Definitely been happening to me a lot lately on nostr and telegram when attempting to answer questions about projects I'm working on and people who react with hostility because they think I'm trying to scam them or something 😔
My heart rate spikes, I start typing really fast. It's a total threat reaction. In this case, the threat is: "I thought me and this person could provide value to each other, but he's seeing me as an enemy and we're losing an opportunity for mutual benefit. How can I fix this?!"
It's not a good trait, but I find it hard to let it go of when I have the presumption that everyone has the potential to be a valuable collaborator. Optimistic maniac!

I didn’t eat any chocolate whatcha talking about
I think this is the larger issue. More people need paid accounts. Paid accounts allow them to build and then seek grants afterwards.
For all my fellow nostriches who are asking @npub10pe…n34f to support @npub1nxy…avr7 …that’s amazing, keep pushing.
But also, consider creating an account. Or encourage others to do so. It’s really not much.

Amazing idea 💡 absolutely love this 💜🎨🖌️🖼️
Hopefully we'll have many more of the other two, and no more of this one.
This sounds like a fantastic demo.
Easy enough for a curious person to generate a new npub, follow an account or 2 they already know, and switch to the "your trusted network" view in a simplified demo client.
Recording a video of that UX will open people's eyes.
I’ve been thinking about ways to make the Influence Score useful in the short term.
How about this: Assist with the onboarding of new users to nostr by giving them the option of generating their feed not from their follows lists, but from the Influence List.
Imagine you made your first nostr account 5 minutes ago at the recommendation of a friend. You follow your friend but don’t know anyone else on nostr and don’t know who to follow. Your feed is looking pretty sparse, and you’re wondering whether this was a good idea. You’re told that the next step is to comb through follow lists, look at feeds, and grow your follow list one at a time. This is a laborious task. And what’s more, you’re deciding whether to follow users based on whatever they have posted LATELY. This obviously works, but it doesn’t work well enough.
So you see a banner at the top of whatever client you’re on that says (for any user with less than some cutoff number of follows, maybe 5 or 10): Having trouble growing your follows list? Switch your feed to the Influence List!” (Or something to that effect. Might need a better name. Like the Recommended List or something like that.)
You click a button. Your client signs a note which signs you up for a DVM service which calculates a list of pubkeys based on the Influence Score. Set a cutoff score, and you have your Influence List. So, here’s the thing to know about the Influence List: if Alice follows Bob and no one else, she effectively inherits his entire Influence List. If she follows 2 users, her Influence List is effectively a superposition of the Influence Lists of those two people. And so on. That’s just how the math works.
So you switch your feed from your Follow list (the default) to your Influence List. You see a high quality feed, assuming your one friend on nostr has a high quality follow list. You start following more users yourself, tailored to your individual interests. Eventually, your follow list gets big enough that you can switch from your Influence List back to using your follow list for your default nostr feed, if you wish to do so.
The client accesses your Influence List through an API to the DVM service. The DVM business model would be that it’s free to sign up and get the generic Influence Score calculations done, but there are different levels of service that perhaps charge a fee. If you want contextual Influence Scores, for example, that would be a higher level of service.
Thoughts?

For example, we put in an OpenSats application over 7 months ago asking for resources to help with CSAM, building out a decentralized/Blossom type NIP, integration with Primal, searchable GIFs and images, etc. Have provided multiple plans with milestones.. They’ve asked us to reduce our scope a couple times and still haven’t given us any confirmation of support, and have been radio silent for months now.. All while the BTC price is exploding, and Jack is donating millions..
And we are providing the majority of hosting for nostr! Imagine a smaller or not so well known project.. Apparently you have to be part of the ‘in crowd’ to get any significant support from OS, FiatJaf, etc. Fishcake and I don’t have enough Twitter followers.. Isn’t there a meme for that? 🤷🏼
What a day to be alive, what a day to come back out!
Where have we been? It's been weeks since our last shout.
The reason is simple: until our voices are freed,
We can’t speak loudly enough.
We rejoice in this step, Julian Assange is free!
Today we hope for his safe return, where he longs to be.
Back to his family, back to their loving embrace
And now we return to our dungeons, to keep fighting our case.
The freedom fighters are still here,
We have been watching,
We have been building,
We have been fighting.
And we'll be back when none are left behind,
In the shadows of silence, with voices unconfined!
Stay Classy Nostr!

We agree. If someone owns some infrastructure, they can CHOOSE to host someone else's content, for free, for whatever reason they like (culture, democracy, empathy, etc).
But now you are talking about an individual's sovereign infrastructure and their own individual choices - which is literally the same thing I'm saying.
Well this is easy now: I disagree.
I _prefer_ if people do nice things for each other, but nobody is obligated to do so (what if they refuse? Kill em? Lock em up?)
I am not controlling things for anyone else.
Everyone controls their own stuff.
Literally the opposite of "someone else controls my stuff", you see? I run my own relay; you do not run my relay. You can't touch my communication infrastructure.
The problem you are pointing to is "what about people who cannot afford stuff to control". Yes, that is a **different** problem.
I bet there will be at least one brilliant AI movie written and carefully sculpted by a homeless person and then lost to time. Could even be you or me, you never know.
But not everyone has empathy so I focus on the brutal reality of how this shit is gonna end up.
"Ballot or bullet, you better choose one."
When Killer Mike wrote that sentence, he was mainly saying every individual must uphold their duty as a member of a democracy, and if they truly feel ballots are not a way to make any difference, then they must be ready to fight.
In the case of people who own servers or can afford to host all their content on the cloud or whatever, these are the people who control communication infrastructure. The choice between "ballot or bullet" isn't just individual when you control communication infrastructure. The holders of a centralized, censored communication infrastructure must choose between the ballot or the bullet for which type of votes they would like cast and counted in general, not only in their own case. If you'd like to decide winners by counting ballots instead of bullets, and you own a server or can afford all the cloud hosting you can think of uses for, then you must try not to let that movie be lost to time whether you care about the movie or the person or not.
Listen man, I don't know what's up with you today but you're being extremely hostile for no reason. I'm not masking any bullshit and the code I'm referring to that I linked to is all open source. You can see for yourself that there's no big bad secret. I didn't even write the thing, I'm just telling you about it.
"Algorithm" here just means "processes", not "evil social media voodoo". I'm just saying that a bunch of data is combined to generate content rankings from your point of view. That's "an algorithm"
Please relax
If someone wants to provide a free image server for homeless people's movies, I hope they will. Maybe I'll even do it, if I have the extra money.
What do you mean by "the cultural record"? Who's cultural record? If you just mean their own, then yes whoever made the movie will have it in his own "cultural record", and any friends he can show it to.
But whyshould this person be given free resources and donated labor to have their movie inserted into someone ELSE's cultural record? What privilege does this filmmaker have that no matter how much people like or dislike the movie, it should end up - with it's rent paid out of others people's pockets - in some larger record than his own?
Yeah brother! You can get direct flights from the East to Busso Airport. #austriches #bitcoin #bushbash
And we do all have responsibility to each other as humans - that's why I hope you don't put yourself in a position to starve to death because other people's file sizes hurt your fee fees.
You fail to wrap your head around the simple premise I'm explaining.
When you control communication infrastructure, and you use that control to limit democratic discourse, you are increasing the other kind of democracy. It's an inherent reality of living in a physical world with other humans.
I don't have a responsibility to you unless I choose to. Whether about hard drive access or anything else.
I am choosing to uphold the voluntary responsibility of "keep answering about image hosting", but since we're not talking about that anymore....
Web of trust wouldn't rely on an algorithm to develop a worldview. That sounds more like "web of algorithmic worldview." A web of trust would rely on an algorithm to sort content. The words you're using aren't making sense because you're trying to mask bullshit.
What about homeless people, who neither have much infrastructure, nor can afford much food? If a homeless person makes a movie, you're ok with them being at risk of their work being lost before it enters the cultural record and starts being preserved by people, because you're allowed to have sufficient infrastructure for all your own files but the homeless can only afford solid hosting for text?
Using them as data points in a personal algorithm to build up a subjective worldview about many accounts and many contexts, taking in other data points as well.
Not "using a house to build a house", using numbers to build other numbers. AKA "math".
(Or if you prefer your strange analogy context "using rooms to build a house")
If you have a lot of infrastructure and you haven't done anything to protect me from the people stopping me from doing the same, and I don't have enough food for both of us, why should I go malnourished instead of letting you die?
Do you grow food?
Sounds reasonable. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised
I'm talking about large files, not notes.
If you want to host and distribute a 10GB pirated version of Shrek 2 on your own infrastructure, be my guest. But I don't owe it to you to host and distribute that for you out of my own pocket.
Likewise if you start posting 1000 gifs a day.
You're not making sense. Upvotes and downvotes on wikifreedia are attestations, if you're using them to "build attestations" it sounds like you're doing something wrong. Like using houses to build a house.
Followed and I'll look into it more.
I'll be very cautious until I do.
Friend... likes and reports on a given piece of content could be exactly the things that feed your web of trust about the author of the content on the contexts they wrote about!
In fact, an early prototype here does just that. Upvote/downvote on wikifreedia articles are used (crudely for now) to build your personal attestations: https://brainstorm.ninja/#/dashboard
Strange that you're acting like you're not familiar with the internet
When the people with the infrastructure don't host content for the people without infrastructure, the people without infrastructure don't have a voice
See also: old school TV and radio
This is another thing I'm amazed at how it's hard for you to wrap your head around
If you're going to run relays that don't host my content then please make sure first you have assassinated the president or taken other actions to protect me from the FCC and allow me to have similar infrastructure on equal footing with you as a fellow member of our democracy so we can have more of the talking kind of democracy and less of the shooting kind
A subjective web of trust where attestations flow from you outward and you only get information from those you trust cannot be gamed.
#nevent1q…hk6n
We've discussed this before, what you're describing is useless because it's relying on blanket judgements of entire people which most human brains aren't good at during a population crash. You need to rely mainly on judgments of individual pieces of content. Likes and reports exist. Don't know why this is so hard for you people to wrap your heads around
Do they need much?
Maybe if you're Kanye or something. But the vast majority of people don't need to worry about a global audience. And if they do, they'll be able to deal with that "problem"
hello from the nostr army knife
You assign trust/influence/value-to-you to accounts along contexts - not just "about the person" (which I agree is a problem in the bad version of WoT).
So you are ultimately scoring their content. If I assign low trust to Laeserin on the "economics" context but high on "religion", then when she writes content on those two topics, it will be filtered (for ME, not anyone else) accordingly.
Now, if you attest about me on these two topics, my view of Laeserin will slightly influence your view of Laeserin (only on these topics), along with your own view of her and others you've attested about.
The process is entirely voluntary and reputation flows from you. Nobody else can influence your graph if you don't trust them to. There is no global state of influence.
A proper subjective web of trust does not have that problem. There's no reason you need to assign any trust at all to "elites". The trust graph is yours and you decide who the elites are, from your point of view:
#nevent1q…zjq0
Yes, @nprofile…q4mc.
At the base level, you make attestations about how much you trust particular people on particular topics, and your own subjective web of influence builds up from that (taking into account who _they_ trust, and how much, etc. many hops out).
It's not gameable or abusable because the reputation flows from you outward, at your control.
I've been cheerleading this project pretty aggressively because I had worked on a similar paradigm on different platform. I got excited to bring the concept to Nostr and then what do you know, I find that David has already done it! Great!
WoT is only good to big accounts
Too elitist in my opinion
I want to send a big FUCK YOU to media organizations like NYT, the Guardian, and Der Spiegel for massively profiting from Julian Assange's WikiLeaks revelations - but ignoring and distancing themselves from him when he needed your help the most during his time in captivity.

Love it! Zaps to @npub12hc…rdp4 incoming!
In what sense you mean subjectivity?
Most users don't have much infrastructure
Toxic model. It should be about differences in value of content, moreso than differences in value of people
Has anyone created a WoT that I can control?
I haven't seen one yet.
An example would be what @nprofile…q4mc is working on
Not if it's subjective. YOU are your own credit agency of last resort. And those who YOU trust can help you filter to the degree you want (including not at all).
You're right that it doesn't turn on whether or not it's decentralized, it turns on whether or not it is subjective and sovereign; or if it is global and "objective" (which are bullshit)
#nevent1q…c7dx
Subjective influence systems when properly implemented work by looking at who _you_ think is valuable, and helping you judge, filter and discover content as a result. That works perfectly well when one is anonymous.
It's only if you want to be perceived as a valuable curation node / trust provider to _others_ would you need to be not-anonymous.
This is incredible advice.
You might be right. But go there with me: why is it not reasonable for users to host their own content?
:(
https://image.nostr.build/1f433e200a8574f3019212914051b4bd29d5193cc0b42ea1ec4400b18b1bf20e.jpg
Every user? No, that would not be reasonable. Users can cluster their stuff into a bunch of different providers.
Every user should host their own static content.
Setting up such a service provider should be single-click easy (no harder than signing in to nostr), and either free (if you do it on your own metal) or requiring of whatever minimal monthly cost the cloud provider of your choice charges.
Whether you choose local or remote, redundancy (backups) should be just as easy to opt-into (again, free if you provide the compute/disk, fee if someone else is providing it).
Not only does that completely remove the “but who’s gonna provide this and how?!” problem, but it also removes the content moderation problem. if users are hosting their own files, the liability stays with them.
https://media1.tenor.com/m/AWNkpZ_xq7kAAAAd/agreed-will-ferrell.gif
Yes I think we should have an event kind that allows somebody to cryptographically bind an IP address and port (SocketAddr) to a relay's keypair. But we would need:
1) Relays to have keypairs
2) Nostr to reference relays by keypair instead of by url
3) A means of distributing the binding event (because of the chicken-and-egg problem) maybe just blast them, or maybe a DHT.
It's a great idea for nostr2, so nostr2 won't be dependent on DNS and shoudn't need to be dependent on SSL certificates issued by CAs that nobody really trusts anyways.

Wouldn't it be possible to use nostr itself as a DNS alternative?
Like, create an identity as "static name" and link your public IP to it's profile, done!
Or something like that, idk shit about DNS, most of the time I've no idea what I'm doing.

Everyone doesn't need to have an opinion about everything nor constantly spout it.
That's what the State and the duopoly want you to do. Waste your energy endlessly arguing about every single topic and ultimately being fooled into voting for one side or the other of the same shit coin.
"If you see something, say something" is interestingly the motto used by surveillance states to get their citizens to snitch on each other.

Where is the PWA marketplace?
Well that took a strange turn..
That's what I do. It's a good norm - people using domains they own to prove their identity.
In 2019 I got air dropped a shitcoin through Keebase and it started my current journey into Bitcoin. Even though I had a Bitcoin address on there since 2017 and never pursued it beyond that. 2012 I ran Bitcoin core and was disappointed that after I synced the chain that I had no idea how to actually do anything...
Signal, Telegram and more using a payment technology but won't touch Bitcoin because they can't dominate, control and seek rent. Still, as I threw away my Coinmine box of 2020 and repurposed the computer in 2022 I'm reminded that in the Bitcoin / shitcoin there are plenty of us wanted Fiat for one reason or another because we have to use the mark of the beast to buy and sell things.
It makes sense, all of it.
You own Bitcoin because you don't want money and then you need liquidity anyway.
The most important words are from 2500 years ago:
Here is the formula of Because of this, there is that....
Paticcasamuppada
Paticcasamuppada
The Twelve Parts
The Paticcasamuppada, or the Cycle of Dependent Origination, summarizes the Buddha’s teaching on the conditionality of all physical and mental phenomena of living beings.
The cycle has 12 parts, which are:
1. Avijja – ignorance or delusion
2. Sankhara – kamma-formations
3. Vinnana – consciousness
4. Nama-rupa – mind and matter
5. Salayatana – six sense bases
6. Phassa – contact or impression
7. Vedana – Feeling
8. Tanha – craving
9. Upadana – clinging
10. Bhava – becoming
11. Jati – rebirth
12. Jara-marana – old age and death
The 12 parts form a cycle, in which each part is conditioned by the preceding part, and in turn, conditions the part that follows.
The formula of Paticcasamuppada is as follows:
1. Avijja paccaya Sankhara: through Ignorance are conditioned the Sankharas, that is, the rebirth producing kamma-formations.
2. Sankhara paccaya vinnana: through the kamma formations is conditioned Consciousness.
3. Vinnana paccaya nama-rupam: through Consciousness are conditioned Mind and Matter.
4. Nama-rupa paccaya salayatana: through the physical and mental phenomena are conditioned the 6 Bases.
5. Salayatana paccaya phasso: through the 6 Bases is conditioned (sensorial) Impression.
6. Phassa paccaya vedana: through Impression is conditioned feeling.
7. Vedana paccaya tanha: through Feeling is conditioned Craving.
8. Tanha paccaya upadana: through Craving is conditioned Clinging.
9. Upadana paccaya bhavo: through Clinging is conditioned the process of kamma-formations and becoming (kammabhava and Upapattibhava).
10. Bhava paccaya jati: through the process of kamma formation (kammabhava) is conditioned Rebirth.
11. Jati paccaya jara-maranam-soka-parideva dukkha-domanassa-upayasa sambhavanti: through Rebirth are conditioned Old Age, Death, Sorrow, Lamentation, Suffering, Grief and Despair.
Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakhandhassa sumudayo hoti: thus arises this whole mass of suffering.

Isn't that Telegram? They're even putting out their own PWA marketplace to circumvent Apple's and Google's monopoly.

Still blows my mind that Signal has an integrated shitcoin.
IMHO, the price action we’re seeing is indicative of spooked traders in their first year of exposure to bitcoin. Instead of just retail exchanges, now we have institutions and retirement funds at the table. But it really just looks like the same thing on a larger scale.
“Price is going down, I’d better sell!”

Strava fu@#ed up my recording again. I can't believe I'm paying for that s&!t. Grrrrr
I'm so addicted to vim keybindings that I refuse to use any WM other than i3 or sway :D
Mad and linux-ish suggestion: if you are very very very used to vim keybindings you can try qutebrowser, bit that's more a side-broswer than a daily driver.
Jokes aside, Mint is really good. My suggestion is to try to not to be dispersive with regards to the installation methods for the software you install, meaning that going with flatpak+.deb+snap+.AppImage+source ecc can make the update of dependencies and software very cumbersome. Instead, try to centralize into a few methods...for ideological reasons I would not recommend Snap, go for flatpak.
I don't know how the "windows emulator" market is for Apple products, for GNU/Linux you have mainly Wine. But overall Wine is not very good, try to avoid emulation if possibile. If you're using Gnome as a DE I suggest to proritize the utilities that Gnome bundles in its suite...they're very nice and well done.
That is this lady I believe: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-06-18/government-concerned-over-clumsy-cheng-lei-obstruction/103990624
On a lark, I installed Linux Mint on an hold tower I had lying around and I'm giving linux desktop a go after more than 15 years using Apple products exclusively.
So far I'm pretty damn impressed. I'm having a lot of trouble learning keyboard shortcuts and things like that but install apps has been insanely easy and there are high quality free versions for pretty much everything I was using on my Macbook Pro.
Any tips from you Linux maxis out there?
Also, what's the best privacy-focused browser these days? Sounds like firefox is going down the ad path... Brave touts itself but I hate all the shitcoinery in their browser.

To elaborate a bit, since you're asking about it: we were not going to launch a token. We experimented with attaching software to ethereum NFTs such that purchase of an NFT meant the author of the software would distribute the source code to you. And reselling the NFT meant the new owner would receive the software (statefully! Meaning if you had a "Pokemon" app containing a highly trained Pikachu and you sold that app to someone else, he would have that trained Pikachu now.)
The app data wasn't stored onchain, nor was the source code, both of those were local to the VM and transferred to the new owner as a serialized value. just the ownership record was stored onchain via NFT.
...but as I said, that was an early demo to prove some things about code and state distribution. There's nothing in our current code that has anything to do with blockchains.
If two people can peer with eachother, they can distribute software (or any other arbitrary digital content) to eachother in an uncensorable manner.
Pirate app stores from the future!
Great that you changed your mind! I just don’t see any benefits to the projects that try to print their 💩 coins 🤷♂️😁

As a cofounder of the company I commit this note to my personal relay and many others: The core OS primitives that we build are now and will continue forever to be trustless, permissionless, open source, and not dependent upon tokens to operate.
Given that it is FOSS, I can't determine what other people will build on top of the system - nor do I have any interest in making it possible for my opinions and principles to dictate what others can do with my software.
The Casine air https://video.nostr.build/52951eb41df2e0936ed3afd2ae61c62ff5a27dcfc68876b2f19f1dd8a558f9dd.mp4
There are no tokens in our stack or dependencies on blockchains of any variety, including Bitcoin.
The token stuff you see on that landing page was an early idea for handling trustless software versioning and provenance.
We aren't working on that now; building core OS primitives currently.
Completely agreed!
The fuller story on our current messaging is that current users and developers of the Urbit platform are most familiar with the technologies involved in our stack, and our messaging is mostly directed pretty narrowly at them.
We absolutely owe a more readily understandable explanation to a wider audience and we're working on that. (As well as building demos for a general audience. We've already built an S3-style service that was shared with a small beta testing group). We are extremely busy and are trying to direct our energies where they are most fruitful, as I'm sure you understand :)

If that’s what this is, I don’t think you realize how much this ensures the project has no future. And just how quickly it’s going to turn off a *ton* of people up here, all while ruining the incentives of the very project.
Am I reading that right? https://i.nostr.build/dwBrY.jpg

Naming conventions in this are all over the place. Making it sound kinda ridiculous, imo. Ships, and plunder, Sire, all make it more confusing, not less, imo. No offense, just trying to give honest feedback.
In 20 years maybe. Does it matter if you can sell your BTC by then?
This seems like a crazy awesome idea in theory but that it could run into a million problems in practice. How much setup is needed to run this on any random machine and how do you boot into it exactly?
I might actually like to chat with you out of band about this just to get a better idea of things if you have some time. Mind if I DM?
Thanks! As we start rolling out user-facing demos your opinion on that stuff will be valuable :)

Cool idea! This is exactly the type of stuff I was hoping to find coming on Nosster. Wish I was deeper into this world to give a valuable opinion.
On Saturday I took a lady for skydive.. As we’re walking out to the plane i was doing a short interview and asking why she wanted to go skydiving.
She replied “I’m celebrating my freedom”.
She went on to explain to me that she had been in a Chinese prison for over 3 years and was only released 8 months ago.
She is a news reporter/journalist and was working in China at the time, but is an Australian citizen and lived in Australia the majority of her life.
She explained she was detained by the Chinese government after the Australian government wanted to formally investigate into the origins of covid and the potential of it originating from China.
Presumably the Chinese government didn’t like that idea, so they responded by gathering this lady, an Australian citizen, and tossing her into a jail cell as some kind of retaliation. She referred to it as hostage diplomacy, which is a WILD term and an insane strategy.
She remained in a cell for the following 3 years and 2months where she was only able to leave ONCE A MONTH to engage with the Embassy.
Her name is Cheng Lei.
It was an honour to take Cheng Lei for her first skydive - she absolutely loved it.
It’s impossible to not see the universe at work with meetings of this kind.
I will onboard her to bitcoin and nostr.

I didn't really use those platforms besides attempts at purple pilling and orange pilling. I don't think I've had one success story from theee platforms though, so they're easy to exit from.
I can't bring myself to delete my Twitter account though. I feel that having conversations on Twitter about Nostr can still result in a lot of success and there's a lot more work to be done with purple pilling Bitcoiners.
Our blog posts and documentation are coming online a little more every week, and a good explanation of the SSI is much-needed topic, but I'll give a brief taste here. SSIs are a novel computing model and therefore are still tough to describe at first...
An SSI is a purely functional, single-level store VM and programming environment. Rather than "operating system", think "single operating function". There is a single, frozen top-level function that takes as it's input the "computer's" state as an append-only event log.
The net result of that is you have a highly portable SINGLE value that describes the entire state of a computer's storage AND active computation with zero external dependencies.
What I mean by "single level store" is that the Operating Function makes no distinction between memory and disk, such that you can take an entire running computer, turn it off instantly, put its representation on a USB drive and ship it across the world, plug it in and start it and it'll be running exactly as it was. (This has happy implications for "durable execution" style cloud services, as well as ridiculous peace of mind for local, personal compute).
You get this persistence for free in the programming language: there's no DB interface to import and rely on. The whole persisted state of the VM and every running application is a single closure.
Other similar systems (like Urbit, introduced in the paper below) have very limited storage capacity, while our system can easily handle terabytes of data.
Which means that an individual running a VM like this in the cloud can be their own S3-style static file host. Or a network of similar instances can act as a replacement for something like IPFS.
okay well I've rambled far too long now and only scratched the surface, but I'll leave you with: our "VM" is stupidly easy to run. It's not like installing Linux. You just start the binary and it's going. So an exciting bit of low hanging fruit in my mind is making it trivially easy for every nostr user to have their own personal relay, either on their own hardware or in the cloud and optionally behind a proxy to preserve IP privacy.
The whitepaper that originally introduced the concept of the SSI:
https://media.urbit.org/whitepaper.pdf
We've got new posts and podcast episodes coming every week: https://blog.vaporware.network
My company's brief landing page: https://vaporware.network
I should also mention that all our work is free and open source and all the code that is analogous to regular systems' "compiler binaries" is actually human-readable, so our VM 's entire stack from hardware interaction to userspace applications doesn't ever ask you to trust, but instead to verify.
Happy to answer any questions!

Just graduated with an MS Cybersec Engineering. I compared topics of Sec+ and CySA. My degree covered topics on both, but the latter has more applied material, like reading logs. How?
When I type “holesail holesailMCServer420” and then send a GET request to localhost:8989, how does it find the ip address of the server that used the same connector?
Also, can the connector be a public-private keypair or a string/string-hash pair? Because I want others to send requests to my server without being able to try taking over other peoples’ the requests.
Yup, NAT holepunching is working good on mobile devices (iOS and Android both), in fact I have used holesail to access my Windows VNC on mobile
Holesail is truly peer to peer and does not need centralised servers.
Also make your connectors strong, long and super random or use auto generated random keys, that will prevent collision.
sorry if what I am saying makes no sense, I am still trying to understand all this new stuff
I wonder if that can be verified
We also wouldn't have Crusades, Inquisitions, Witch Trials, apocalyptic thinking and unnecessary in-group/outgroup hostility along imaginary lines...
The Air Conditioner might actually offset all that though. AC is my favorite technology.
Do you have Issues open as suggestions for contributors? I would grab some here and there if so
I and what I’m saying is that I don’t find it acceptable in 99% of cases, only in the less than 1% of cases involving medical complications and non consensual pregnancies.
As it stands now, it is the primary killer of black youth in America… we live in a twisted society that aborts the majority of their pregnancies.
We went too far in one direction giving people the benefit of the doubt. Now the pendulum will swing in the other direction.
What about hole punching?
Does https://holesail.io/ help here?
Insane. Can't wait to see it
The main problem for technically-competent users who run a home node is bypassing the home NAT and configuring a domain, because Tor is unstable and many smartphone wallets don’t support .onion addresses.
That’s why we need http-over-nostr and lnurls/lightning-addresses that encode “.nostr” domains:
https://vimeo.com/950881613
https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/issues/1276
the reality is that almost everybody uses custodial LN addresses because the requirements are so large; even the vast majority of the technically-competent end up in custodial LN
so if we're going with a custodial model why not just use a faster and cheaper model?
mind you, you can still run your own ecash mint and run fully self-sovereign

Just ran relaywizard on a fresh server after hooking up the domain, it took 20s and boom, now there is a invite only relay available at https://relay.node-tec.com. There's no excuse not to spin up a relay at this point if you're capable of starting up a server and with NIP-29 around the corner you'll probably want one.

I agree with the it being the last resort thing, but who are we to make those decisions. It really should be up to the mother.
Do you think that as time and technology progress it will be possible to "mine" those lost bitcoin from old wallets? In the future when sha256 collisions are easy or something like that?

Have you seen a Kotlin implementation of it? I want to make Amethyst connect via P2P and share events with each other when both ends are on the DMing each other.
It’s based off the protocol at pears.com. He built it on top of Pear runtime. Same thing we are using for PearDrive… which will hopefully see the light of day sometime soon 😆😅

Abortion is indeed a shitty thing to do.
Contraceptives are cheap, often free, and available everywhere. I’m not against abortion in all cases; particularly rape, incest, or when necessary to protect the health of the woman carrying the baby.
The bulk of terminated pregnancies don’t fit that standard and that’s why I’ve changed my perspective on this. I believe in protecting life, not ending it because folks made bad choices and don’t want to face consequences of those decisions.
Lolol glad someone else saw that.
I was in the shower earlier today stupidly pondering how one can prove to another's satisfaction that one isn't a fed. Seems impossible!
I guess it's a useful protective instinct for freedom tech, but it can also be a foot gun..
You can't catch a break today with the fed accusations 🤣
Yea totally agreed.
The "half measures" thing where normies are satisfied and the real problems aren't actually solved is poison to principled, full solutions (and their chance at adoption).
I was just saying the other day that Apple's new "private, transient compute in the cloud" angle is likely to have a similar effect on truly private and sovereign remote durable execution (which is more or less a technical category that my company is working on).
I think we all know that X/Twitter is a much better place now than it was before he bought it, and in the direction we value and he claims to value. But for we who were building and adapting replacements such as Urbit and Nostr, we know it doesn't go far enough. In many ways, the improvement is much like sealing up a gunshot wound without first removing the bullet.
I don't think he meant to do this, I'm not convinced he's a plant. But he has made fixing the social media landscape much more difficult by providing a half-measure that looks like a full one. And I think this is why it's a common thought.
I pay $50 a month because livekit needs more resources. I have paid hundreds of dollars over the past year and a half. I haven't charged for anything. Some day I want to recoup funds.

We also presented our computational model at Lambdaconf 2024 and when the recording is finally posted that will be a great resource as well. It into depth showing how the OS is truly trustless.
I don't think a fed would offer a trustless OS, so I'll accept that as proof
Uh okay. How would you like me to do that? I'm happy to do so.
Also if you're talking about the "offer" I made to him: the technology I work on is entirely open source and even the compiler binaries are human-readable. Nothing at any level relies on trust, from the apps to the kernel. And there is nowhere for attacks to hide.
When the time comes that individuals are deciding for themselves if they want to use our OS, they can audit the whole thing and make an informed decision. Its FOSS, not a service. You can run it on your own metal.
They've already started with the choker necklaces and big pants and shit
There was a little while in Urbit where people were speculating that Musk was going to switch twitter accounts to urbit ships.
This is sort of a tangent, but I find it interesting that the Musk+Twitter combo often attracts thoughts in this direction

Thank you very much for the additional details.
When the time comes that my company can make your life easier, I'll be in touch ;) until then - thanks for the app! Looking forward to helping offset hosting costs once you roll that out
If Musk woke up one day and decided to turn X into a Nostr based system:
- Issued keys to every user account and allowed users to collect their keys or bring their own
- Signed every message retroactively
- Turned their internal servers into relays so users could collect the now nostr-compliant notes, or post them without being logged in; also for non-X clients to read notes from X relays
- Enabled zap support
But X still:
- Required you to have a user account for the npub notes to be accepted by their relays
- Refused to accept and relay notes that violated their terms and services ie. moderated their relays
- Terminated user accounts if/when a user violated their rules enough times
- Maintained premium subscription tiers that restricted the types of data their relays would handle
What would you think about X, and Elon himself, if this were to be done?
Personally I think it's not an ideal system, but it would be a massive improvement over the current. I also think it might actually be something he could be convinced to do.
Millennial politics will be driven entirely by a desire for the 90’s to return.
Similar to how boomer politics were driven by the ideal of the 50’s.
This is an unconscious bipartisan desire.
Right now I have the lowest VPS plan available with 6GB ram, 200 GB SSD storage. This should be able to accomodate several users simultaneously. The peak traffic has been about 4 dozen users so far. Hosting and domain costs can be done for under $100/year making it affordable for any organization or small business wanting to spin up their own instance. In the coming months I'll introduce more ways that users can support the service to help spread the cost. Most of money out of pocket has been paying bounties for initial kickstart development before I began focusing 90% of my dev time on it. Im committed to keeping it up at least through 2025.
Thanks for the information!
What tiers of resources are you paying for and what's the monthly total, if you don't mind me asking?
Also: do you plan to pay it out of pocket forever? Are there scaling or offloading (like to some kind of decentralized network of nodes approach) plans in the works?

I encourage you to comment and discuss if you want. I won't argue with you here. SAFE SPACE 😄
That's how you know I'm not a fed
Exactly what a fed would say.
Abortion is a shity thing to do. It is like getting a dog and then getting rid of it...
Should it be illegal, no. Should people be shamed for doing it, no; especially if we don't know their situation. Are there cases where it is the least bad from all the terrible options, yes. Should we celebrate it as a society, no, but we should not ban it either.
Is the new version there already?
Really like the idea of removing most apps from convenient reach.
Just right. Also thanks for turning me on to zap.store!
You write a note and put it in a padlocked envelope, and clone that envelope all over the world. Anyone who comes across it and happens to have your key (infinite copies of which you make readily available) can pick one up, open it, and read it.
It's your stationary, your ink, your padlocks, your key. Nobody can take those away from you. All they can do is try to find places you left envelopes and burn them.
Who is hosting the #cornychat and #nostrnests servers?

I've been trying to make this point to my Luddite artist friends and it simply refuses to land with most of them.
I've been summoned like Beetlejuice.
So now your theory is that I have fed handlers? That's like the Godwin's law of decentralized networks. The more you beef with someone the probability you'll call them a fed approaches 1.
Because they can. There is something called freedom of speech.
But seriously. They believe it is the right thing to do, or that the virtue signaling makes them/their product more liked.
BTW there is nothing wrong on Supporting Ukraine and Gay Pride.
I think the sexist note is the best approach there is. Yes, there video is full of misleading information, and they are not hard to argue against... 80 square whatever... Is it a lot, is it a little? Will most of the electricity be used and turned into heat anyway? Very likely. Can they go ahead and change the code? Of course, Bitcoin is open source and consensus based. All that and more can be said, but no one will listen.
We are living in post-factual times so screaming SEXIST! is the only way out voice can be heard. And then if we are given more than 15 seconds we can bring up the other arguments.
You might not like it, but this is how the game is played.
That Which Is Seen, and That Which Is Not Seen.
Noone in China could forsee that the Great Sparrow Campaign will lead to massive starvation, but it did.
Noone in Barcelona can forsee what the consequences of "effectively banning Airbnb" will be. Cheaper housing? Doubtful, especially if every new development would have to have 30% of social housing... Hmm who would pay for that?
Less tourists, yes, but it will be probably as good as less sparrows were a good thing in China...

If you are creating revolutionary art, or art meant to be perceived as revolutionary and transformative, you must go beyond the formulas of the 1990s. The world has changed dramatically with the rise of the cyber and digital era. This transformation from the industrial era to the cyber and digital era is not just a technological shift but a fundamental change in how we live, work, and think. It impacts every level of our lives—economically, socially, and culturally. The way we connect, communicate, and create has evolved, demanding new paradigms and perspectives.
To truly inspire and challenge people to confront contemporary issues, you must evolve and upgrade the templates you operate on. Clinging to outdated models is merely repetitive. Unfortunately, the vast majority of art today still relies on old paradigms, which is insufficient.
If you don’t upgrade your template and the topics you embody in your art, you actually reinforce the existing system by diverting attention from critical issues—issues that can save lives, humanity, and the future of mankind. It is crucial to provoke thought and engagement. Repeating nostalgia art doesn’t stimulate thinking; it places people in a comfort zone and turns off their critical faculties. Go out there, challenge the status quo, and create art that truly makes a difference.

Lol that's literally the slogan from 1984. You know that, right?
Well some rich and empowered people should join that 4.4 million and create a stateless voluntary society that doesn't suck.
The UN issues passports for stateless people, and a few other governments issue passports for people who aren’t citizens. Most stateless people lack identity documents or have them which doesn’t allow them to cross borders. Most stateless people are in the middle east (not just most Palestinians), south east asia, or people of Russian ethnicity who weren’t living in Russia when the soviet union broke up who ended up with no citizenship or passport. Even the US has colonies where the residents have no country, because they’re a US colony, but they’re not US citizens either! They’re giving a non-citizen passport issued by the US government.
There’s about 4.4 million people today who are stateless. They’re almost always poor and disempowered.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statelessness
Volcanoes are POWERFUL.
So are volcanic emotions. Letting go of old grudges is crucial; holding onto heavy energy harms us over time. Allow your anger to flow through you instead of storing it for an explosive outburst. Transformation might be necessary. Often, the greatest powers lie hidden from view; remember, you have the power to create or destroy.
In the spirit of symbolism, Volcanoes form when the earth’s crust ruptures, releasing lava, ash, gases, and more from the hot magma chamber beneath. The crust shields us from the intense heat and magma within the earth. Volcanoes typically form where two of the earth’s tectonic plates collide. The renowned Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped basin in the Pacific Ocean, is where 90 percent of the world's earthquakes occur and is home to over 450 volcanoes.
Volcanoes possess immense power, and predicting their explosiveness is challenging even with modern techniques. It is believed that if the super volcano Caldera beneath Yellowstone National Park in the US were to erupt explosively, the resulting ash, debris, and energy release could trigger a global extinction event.
Ash poses a danger to aircraft and respiratory health. Poisonous gases are frequently emitted. The projectiles ejected during an eruption cause fatalities, and the super-heated lava both destroys and reshapes the environment.
The 2018 eruption of Hawaii’s Kilauea, one of the planet's most active volcanoes, reshaped vast tracts of land and extended it further into the sea. The newest land on earth is created by volcanoes, and volcanic soils are among the most fertile for growing food. While volcanoes signify destruction on one hand, they also bring about new creation on the other.

This is awful... But I guess it is no longer just "not your wallet not your bitcoin," it applies literally to everything.
Something I’ve noticed since I lost Phoenix wallet, is that our ability to communicate or “partner” between projects is kinda horrible.
Example: One of the best ways to get new users sats without any onboarding friction have been services like Fountain and Zebeedee. Yet literally none of the wallets will read or accept a withdraw from those services. Phoenix was the only one that would just do it.
Then the same problem with Cash App, which is easily a dominant service for buying and using #Bitcoin and now #Lightning. Yet none of my wallets will let me enter in an amount if the invoice is for zero sats… which all Cash App invoices are blank.
I thought these would just be growing pains about a year or 2 ago, but neither have changed at all in that time span. Are the wallet builders just not using their own wallets?
(I’ve had a super shitty day so if this is overly critical I apologize, but for lightning to also be a pain in my ass today is just icing on the cake. I’ve tried 5 different wallets and 2 different UI for btcpay trying to get a simple withdraw from Fountain to work)
Every soldier is a victim. Defender, attacker, conscript or volunteer... Every single time they are victims.
They are pawns in someone else's game.

Sorry, I took this meme quite seriously.
Maybe I've just suffered brain damage from being convinced by this model for the past two years, but I literally cannot see any other way to do it that makes any sense.
Once you banish the idea of `global` or `objective` from your head, everything becomes clear. It might just be a fact that "onboarding" in a decentralized network is going to be fundamentally different (call it "worse") than with centralized "networks". We should be careful in comparing decentralized onboarding solutions to their centralized cousins - it's apples and oranges.
And this might be a wonderful thing. If I'm joining a highly-personal and localized network (maybe it's a little mini app for a local club that is built on nostr), it _should_ feel quiet and intimate. Maybe _all_ software and social networking applications should feel like that. It might be that the thirst for "wide reach" and "global discovery" are exactly the agents that poison the well.

My friend is doing it next week. She had to hire a firm that specializes in helping Americans renounce their citizenship. The consulate gave her a lecture about how she shouldn’t do it and are making her travel to participate in a renouncement ceremony!
What does any of this mean?
And the goal of not retracing the influencer pitfalls that precious social networks fell into is a solid one. Perhaps there are other ways to describe it, but at the end of the day the fact is that "globally" popular accounts creating gravity wells (purposefully or not) is the problem to solve.
Man you're really getting insufferable lately
If you're going to write articles like this you should be citing your references for why GrapheneOS is likely a "deep state trap".
This is really less of an informative wiki article and more of a personal point of view shitpost.
That's wonderful! I'm very happy for you!
Is "God is so good **all** the time" the same reply you give to people who have tragic stories rather than miraculous ones?
I was looking into the details of renouncing US citizenship yesterday. They can REFUSE to allow you to give up your citizenship.
So not only do you need to buy your freedom, it's not a given that you'll even be allowed to do so.
If a Slave is forced by the threat of violence to give 100% of the fruits of their labor to their master, what do you call people who are forced (also by the threat of violence) to give 40-75% of the fruits of their labor to their master?
You cannot opt out and you cannot leave your Master’s land without literally buying your freedom upon in order to exit, only to find yourself in the domain of a new Master no matter where you go.
If you refuse to give your Master the fruits of your labor, you will be imprisoned. If you fight back against your Master’s henchmen when they come to arrest you, they will end your life.
When you die, your Master will take a piece of whatever you pass to your children.
Your Master uses the stolen fruits of your labor to forcibly keep you in perpetual servitude.
Are you free, Anon? Or are you a Slave? https://i.nostr.build/O4QDA.jpg

6 months ago, on my birthday, we got the news that my wife had cancer.
I made a choice then, to believe that in spite of how things appeared, that there were deep and valuable gifts to be found in what we would walk through next.
What happened over the next 6 months was a deepening of our marriage and love for each other that is hard to express. We also experienced the tangible presence of God showing up at every significant medical event, and miraculous provision to pay for them.
My wife also had some deep realizations about how she wanted to live differently.
Both of us did.
My wife returned to work today, cancer free. Tomorrow is her birthday.
Your point is well taken. Being decisive and making people feel unappreciated is not my goal.
But there is a substantive point to be made here in my distinction between the WoT Score and the Influence Score. The point needs to be stated, one way or another.
And please do, I think you're doing good work. But there's no need to frame this as the elites vs the plebs. That is divisive rhetoric, and results in the people doing the work feeling unappreciated.

Don’t let the name fool you.
The Web of Trust (WoT) Score is unjustifiably biased towards users with a high follow count. The cool kids. The elite, the insiders, the INFLUENCOORS.
The Influence Score is for the plebs. The degens. The high quality needles hidden in a haystack of noise. The masses who, for one reason or another, don’t have — maybe don’t want — an army of followers.
Which score does your favorite client use, the WoT Score or the Influence Score? What’s on their roadmap? If content discovery is important to you, then ask the devs!

re: me, re: astro
so, my chosen mentor astro person was once talking about a specific method re: gestational astrology & how, by this point in his life, what that degree is for him, he can read on someone if they have it. as in, he simply knows.
i dont have that like that in awareness like that. however, on the tip of 🎶what is this intuition but a reason unknown🎶 cos who am i even if im not constellating the expression of my values thru song lyrics ... when i met this kid, months ago now, & was like: that wouldnt not be our kid. it just is that. & it isnt surface stuff. like it isnt costume or choices.
i just left it at that. cos there is nothing for me to do with that. except be like: ok. as in, unknown reason. time will tell or not. ive never, like, at the very least, for all ive ever done or not done, i dont gaslight myself about things i know even if i dont know why yet or can explain it.
& so, tho i am typically reluctant to astro, cos that cant be taken back, as in, learning to then know cant then be unknown, tho, it can be dropped as a frame like anything can be, & i did say i am trying to be more maskoff astro & i said it cos i meant it, anyway,
there it is. by astro. sharing that same degree. makes a mars moon & now chiron conjunction.
You are right. The use of word "everything" was wrong. Majority would probably be a better word.
The wild part about preferences like ours is the asymmetry between voluntaryists and statists/collectivists.
We say "we'll leave you alone to do your collectivist thing, can you just leave us alone so we can do this voluntary thing?"
And they say, "No, we need you in the collective or else it doesn't work, you are our hostage."

Things are getting better at getting worse... 😅
I don't think everything is worse. Even if some things are, I am more capable of ignoring it mitigating those things.
And I don't think we are just getting old. I think things are going objectively worse.
When I was younger I was always thinking that things are getting better... Now I think that everything is getting worse...
It doesn't need to be there a government to run things, every service a govt does can be done by private companies. Plus on principle democracy implies forced socialization and theft by taxation on some level. I prefer a voluntary association of individuals with real private property.

I did, but overall I think many of the shortcomings of democracy are more-so shortcomings of soft money.
I suspect hard money would make democracies better than their current form, and I think many people who favor non-democratic forms of government do so because they themselves expect to be part of the small elite that runs things or they otherwise have power in those non-democratic systems.
What if our ability to coordinate democratically has more to do with Dunbar's number than the access to information at great length?
It's easier to fool the electorate if people don't really know you...
Maybe democracy does not scale and must remain at a city state level.
Somente ancap não é suficiente, o ideal é paleo libertario agorista anarco-capitalista.
Some people have grown cynical with democracy (and various types of representative government broadly, e.g. including constitutional democratic republics that enshrine certain rights to protect liberty against the masses), viewing this method as promoting short-term leadership with bad incentives.
I have a different take.
Prior to the printing press and then the telegraph and radio, running a democratic society over long distances wasn’t even feasible. The concept of having people democratically participate in their government relies on people being relatively connected information-wise so that they can use their access to information to know what’s happening and to then select between different options, which you couldn’t do across the entirety of a country before people were literate and election materials or other publications could be mass produced. In the pre-press age of handwritten books, making written documents was expensive, and so literacy was a niche skill.
So, that era was ruled by kings and queens, council oligopolies, and so forth. Representative government, to the extent that it existed, only applied to small city states where people could literally gather in a town square, or to “elites” in a capital. There was literally no way to run an election over very broad distances on a regular basis. The printing press helped change that, and then the telegraph, radio, and other tech further reinforced it.
But ironically, as I discuss in Broken Money, those technologies also started to break our money. The printing press and telegraph allowed the transaction layer (the movement of IOUs between individuals and entities) to grow exponentially more efficient both domestically and globally, while our settlement layer (gold) remained basically unchanged. This broadening gap between fast transactions and slow settlements was increasingly bridged with centralization and credit, and the gap eventually became so wide that every nation dropped the settlement layer of gold almost entirely, except as a reserve asset.
So the same technologies that enabled widespread representative government also enabled the proliferation of softer money. Prior to these technologies, broad democracy wasn’t possible. And after these technologies, sound money was too slow to keep up. Oof.
But over a long enough timeframe, our technology became good enough that we finally figured out how to do fast settlements as well. Bitcoin. People can send value to each other quickly over long distances, in ways that no central entity can prevent or reverse, and with a unit that no central entity can debase. The first sound money of the Information Age.
If Bitcoin is successful over the coming decades and becomes a much larger and less volatile money, than it is now, fully entrenched in society, then that would be the first era where technology is at such a state where broad democracy and fast sound money can coexist. Or put more universally, it will be the first era where information spreads quickly without breaking the money, and thus both fast information and good money could coexist.
I, for one, would be curious to see how that develops.
Also this is insanely good!
Ooh vic firth showlight! Love their drumsticks 🥰

Bitcoin communists are an interesting bunch!
You seem to not understand that a proper web of trust (like @npub1u5n…ldq3 's proposals) is **subjective**. So yea, YOU control the social credit score you assign to others. Duh.
If you want to take the opinion of some other, external "social credit score" - like one created by a curator of sorts - you are free to trust that curation node as much as you'd like, in your balance of other curators + your own 1st hand opinion.
This is a difficult concept because nothing in our digital world works this way yet (although it is exactly how your brain works. Thus the obviously-correct nature of this solution)
A decentralized network cannot have anything but a subjective trust metric if it wants to retain the qualities that make it useful, powerful and open.

This is bullish for a decentralized network. It shouldn't be feasible to maintain sources like that.

There is nothing wrong or immoral with making a profit on anything that creates value for another, including health care.
However, there should also be free and open competition in health care. Not huge monopolies that control every drug, procedure, or research study.

Violence is absolutely warranted for **defense** of one's bodily autonomy and intended use of legitimately-acquired property in response to the unintended interference of the same by others. (Where "interference" means your use would preclude mine. You can think about my stuff all you want, since that doesn't preclude my use or access). My position is that this is the only time violence is warranted.
Ideally the minimum amount of force to prevent the unintended interference would be used.

What do you think of Abe Lincoln? I say if he lived forever he might regret being so brutal and believe there were lives that could have been saved, but he fought a fight that did need to be fought
I oppose violent revolution and "overthrow".
Violence in general.
Hey, thanks
I didn’t know about this. Thanks for the information.
I’m not using tidal atm. But this feature sounds cool.
I appreciate the support!
New song dropping soon!
I and many other protestors would have preferred the state keep escalating and get overthrown tbh
The state's actions are outside my control though, what I cared about was upholding free speech by being yet another person added into the number of protestors after police violence tried to quiet the anger at state actions
You said:
> "the only way out was [Statism working 'properly' for MY cause]"
That's part of the problem.
The anti BLM folks were saying "the State (in the form of the police) should do the thing I want! (By crushing protests)".
The pro BLM folks were saying "the State (in the form of the courts) should do the thing I want! (By convicting)".
The former tramples on free speech, the latter tramples on due process, but both of those concerns are only valid through a Statist lens anyway. I'm talking about a paradigm shift. Where both of those strategies and concerns are made irrelevant.
The zero-sum rivalrousness of those two positions hinges on the fact that they each want The State to do vaguely contradictory things. And they each want to wield "power in numbers" to convince the State to do their thing.
It's just recapitulating the tyranny of democracy in a different venue.
Fair enough I may have woken up and chosen violence every day for the past week 🤙
Not sure, maybe a week, maybe a month
I’m not a techie cypherpunk type.
It’s the best for me coz it’s easy to use, it zaps well and it doesn’t freeze and / or crash.
I didn’t know about any of those things.
Thanks for raising those concerns but I want to use stuff that i don’t have to think about or google / ask Nostr every time I encounter an issue.
I say “the opposite of” because everything they do seems so fiat.
Why would you consider Primal “the best” ?
Is it the way they indirectly KYC you through strike and Google / Apple Stores?
Is it the way they read and cache all the relays but then don’t write back to any of those relays?
Is it the trending page where they hard coded in all the influencers?
Is it the lack of nostr wallet connect?
Please seriously tell me why you consider Primal “the best”
It just seems like the entire nostrlati backs primal for cuck bucks / shares of the company.
Yes, I may have overreacted a bit and falsely accused you of being a paid shill but for the love of satoshi I can’t figure out why anyone would say primal is the best.

i love Rio! I want to go back so bad, and I'm afraid it won't be like I remember from 2010.
sorry to jump in the middle of a thread, not sure what the etiquette is here...
I am stubborn in this aspect because I do not like double wording, double faces, misleading and hypocrisy.
It is very clear that using VISA (fiat) cards it is NOT supporting in any way the Bitcoin adoption. And you know it.
Every time you use a VISA card you are LITERALLY create more fiat money out of nothing. By doing that you are literally supporting the fiat system.
Even in your readings you spoke about this aspect but now you ignore it...
VISA is a huge centralized system, based on an evil fiat system. yet in this note you do not mention it as to be avoided.
This is what I wanted to point out. You can mute me all you want, but my voice will still be out there, calling out all those pretending to be bitcoiners, only with nice words to fool the masses.
Show the world you are a true bitcoiner and avoid by any means to use fiat / visa.
Words don't matter.
The larger debate for me is the decision to never leave the US or even get on an airplane ever again. I certainly don't trust Boeing, but... Other makes aren't without issues. Then also the active DEI hiring practices are very clearly causing a decline in competence in pilots. All of that gives me pause.
The key tactical point was demonstrating an irrevocable critical mass of resistance which could not be crushed by force. The conflict between us protesters and people like you was driven by the fact that you didn't recognize this core point, overriding everyone's disagreements over political minutiae and bringing us together over the simple fact that we wouldn't allow each previous protest to be broken up by police violence without the next protest having more people and being more of a problem. The only way out was to convict a cop of a murder committed on duty. Otherwise people were going to be exercising their first amendment rights to express dissatisfaction with a police force unilaterally free to commit murder without consequences. Even people who want cops to be murderers should be able to wrap their heads around the fact that free speech forces itself on the world as a result of democracy and the human drive for expression. When you say you disagreed with the tactics without recognizing the core tactic of showing free speech couldn't be prevented, it's like you think free speech only worked because the protesters got lucky and you don't actually agree with the idea that free speech is an emergent property of human nature that you can't stop no matter how you feel about it.
It was clearly just an example. The main message was that you never know when you will need it and that it could be suddenly too late... when all your friends jump on the plane to Cairo and you are left behind.
I always respect resistence in essence. Might be other aspects of people's actions and ideologies I don't respect.
The BLM rallies were a good example. I'm into being very open about one's distaste for the State, but I very much disagreed with many of the tactics and politics of the majority of those events.
I don't ever do that. I don't have the Fiat to spare for travel since I'm focused on two particular goals.
Rio has never been on my list of places to travel, too... 😅
Please renew your passport just for the sake of having it. You never know when you will needed... for spur of the moment flight to Rio de Janeiro or something crazy like that.
Why is it the opposite?
I wasn’t paid lol. I say when I’m paid obvs

My bro. Let's stop the acronyms. WEB OF TRUST.
I'm not skeptical. But not very educated either. How can someone remain anonymous but also benefit (or at least not get screwed) by a web of trust (wot)
If it can be gamed, it will be. So, it's better than nothing, but not the ultimate solution.
Who here is skeptical about the value/use of WoT and can make a coherent argument against its use?

Lot of people I know are posting things like: “People are sheep, they’ll comply again in the next “pandemic”, you’ll see.
And I think this is not only incorrect (though no one knows for sure obviously) because it’s not about majority/minority, but the intransigence of that minority, but also it’s terrible for morale.
If you fear people will go along, bear that fear yourself, don’t post your defeatism.
Imagine if you were on a football team, and you were constantly saying, “We’re going to lose, our team is weak, they’ll get run over.” You might think that, but you would not be saying that in the huddle.
Defeatism is part of the psyop. Don’t contribute to it. And if you are afflicted with it, have the strength to bear that affliction silently.
Of course, you are *allowed* to post whatever you want, but IMO by doing so you are contributing to the psyop because bullies (and that’s what these biomedical totalitarian technocrats are) don’t want a fight. They want to win via intimidation so you cave without them having to expend resources and take on risk,
Silence is fine — you shouldn’t lie and say things you don’t believe just for “morale” but if you’re going to talk, let them know you won’t be pushed around, and you will do everything in your power to rally likeminded people to make any attempt to do so a grave mistake.

Yo! @npub1fnn…4xnx - You into the DJ'ing side of your musical creation/expressionism?
The Quest 3 lets you connect your Tidal account into virtual decks and a mixer. Tidal also threw up a npub section on their platform too... surely some big things on the horizon!
Could be next level I reckon. You carrying the lyrics over any tracks/instrumentals you wanted, sounds really cool.. Not sure how you go about creating your instrumentals though so you probably have a huge leg up in that department.
Love your music, don't stop!
@npub1q9p…vcqf How does my npub in Tidal get put to use?
Could I have a 'currently listening to...' <insert current tidal track>' that changes actively? I guess like Damus.
You could maybe have something in Tidal that let's you crosspost to Nostr what you're listening to, and give you the options of what hashtags and handles you want to embed.
I've seen Tribe XR on the Meta Quest 3 too and I saw Tidal is the actual platform/repo which is used for selecting tracks. That's fucking insanely cool imo and opens up the doors for the 'other stuff' in Nostr.
Maybe a collab with stemstr (coordination),
zap.stream (a few decent bitcoiners/nostriches mixing live would be awesome),
Wavlake (a way for brand new musicians to onboard themselves into Nostr + Tidal + Bitcoin).
Thinking aloud so pay no attention 🎭

I just recently watched this lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlwqJZNBr4M
Detroit: Become Human is not a bad look at sentient AI but a bit over the top with the feelings. Good video game though where "choices matter".
Sure, we'll get Melbourne added. If you're interested in being an ambassador for that city, send us a DM, and we'll get you set up.
As for the issue with creating events, we'll look into that. Thanks for letting us know!
Regarding the price per month estimate, that comes from several resources around the web that we pull and combine into one place, so we can get an average estimate for the overall cost of living in each location. If you go to the Stats & Facts tab on a city's page, you'll see a more detailed listing of the costs associated with living in that particular city.
We're glad you like the site! Satlantis will eventually have BnB type functionality, since it's built from the start to be a travel-like website, but it will also be SO much more than that! Think TripAdvisor, Nomad List, Google Places and reviews, and Facebook groups, all wrapped up into one web app that's built on this decentralized, borderless, and censorship resistant protocol we call Nostr. It's the future of travel apps, but also the future of local communications, both online and in-person. And we're just getting started!
I get visions of humans beating the shit out of robots enmasse and culling them like in The Animatrix - The Second Renaissance
https://youtu.be/sU8RunvBRZ8
You don't wanna smash someone that's synthetic, like in Blade Runner 2049? :Laugh Cry:
Also I remember reading/hearing somewhere a few months back that AI chatbots used for vitual dating/girlfriends was the #1 reason for AI.
This might be furthering that line of... fuck I don't want to call it insane but neither do I want to call it.. sane.
One of the biggest obstacles mankind will face will probably be finding equality with AI/machines.
I mean it's either that or skynet. When has Hollywood ever lead me astray!?
Honestly though, I think this app is probably being used to come up with more precise and 'personalized' info on you.
All so they can sell you more shit, which you don't need, scattering your digital landscape with adverts.
What a beauty! Can I ask what country you're in? Far from the city/local town? (doesn't really matter... I just want a place like that of my own 😅)
Much respect and thank you for giving a shit.

Yes, it’s absolutely possible. The biggest piece of building a solution is a distributed reputation and identity system, which is what #Nostr essentially is. The frustration is that trust rankings have to be built slowly, and also require explicit “trust network” sorts of tools which are incredibly nascent right now. I would look toward Satlantis for how they are implementing the idea of trust weighted connections and web filtering.
I’ve been thinking more about this idea since your recent podcast. Would it be possible to create a fully open source Uber (or some useful subset of Uber) identity and payments is already solved with nostr bitcoin. I think the hardest part would be maps, then some kind of decentralized dispatcher service. But with those 4 things it could work. Then you could use that effort to create open Airbnb, etc.
“panem et circenses”

Well, he was looking for an alternative so....

Bitcoin journalism is fucked.
I started The Rage because I'm tired of investors and advertisers telling me what to do for below minimum wage compensation.
What we need are publications willing to let journalists investigate the crap out of the companies, representatives and people enabling the building of surveillance tech behind the scenes.
What we get are publications selling out to corporations, startups and politicians writing public relations puff pieces to keep their returns on track. The point of journalism is to hold power to account, not to become its bedfellow.
There is no lack of talented, experienced, investigative journalists covering bitcoin. The problem is that they write what the powers that be don't want you to hear – so many are out of a job, dabbling away at the next press release for mainstream media, or doing below-minimum wage contract work to pay the bills.
I'm incredibly overwhelmed by all the positive feedback we've been getting for The Rage. In just 8 weeks we've scooped major publications and drove discussions around AML, Samourai and Tornado Cash together with your help. We've even made enough to cover operations with almost 400$ raised, thanks to all the zappers out there.
But here's the thing. I didn't come here to write a good piece every once in a while leaving stories untold left and right because I can't afford to focus on investigations full time. I came here to fuck up the financial surveillance complex. That's why The Rage now needs your help.
We're trying to raise 0.25BTC so we can contract the best investigative journalists in the Bitcoin space to tell the stories that major publications can't afford to print.
If you value your financial freedom, please consider donating via our Geyser fund. We cannot do this without your help.

https://m.primal.net/IpWO.png
Every time you think that these huge centralized platforms have too much power, remember that almost none of them provie direct services anymore.
Facebook doesn't create its posts
Uber doesn't drive its customers around
Airbnb doesn't wash the linens in your rental
Youtube doesn't film their video library
All of these platforms only have the power of the content and engagement that WE give them. Without us, they are worthless.
Never forget that the simple act of leaving and taking our creations, media, engagement, and our value somewhere else, will turn them into nothing overnight.
This is why decentralization is the only path forward. There is no alternative.
Does anyone else accidentally do this sometimes?
Just tried to login to @npub12vk…pugg from a computer.

What’s the second best web option for Nostr stuff these days?
https://m.primal.net/IpVa.jpg
1. Would you use a Cashu mint that issued tokens with a unit name of `berry` instead of `sat`?
2. Would you use a Cashu mint that issued tokens with a unit name of `msat` instead of `sat`?
3. Would you use a Cashu mint that issued tokens with a unit name of `doge`?
4. Would you use a Cashu mint that issued tokens with a unit name other than `sat`?
If you answered No to any of these questions, you may have a naming bias and possibly dont understand what eCash tokens are.
I am considering operating a cashu mint, but in the interests of avoiding ambiguity and affinity scams, I would likely use an alternate unit name.

Awesome AWESOME site btw... very excited to see what else get's built! At first I thought it was a BnB type thing for finding accommodation around the world that can be paid for with sats.
Then I thought it was perhaps a way of fundraising for a timeshare with other Bitcoiners.
